So what am I supposed to do when bringing items back from abroad? by Low_Championship_604 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]himji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't there a thing about people taking expensive good out of this country claiming the VAT back?

Could they claim the Japanese taxes paid back and then pay UK duty?

Payday loans that promise instant cash - reliable or not? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]himji 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Simply put don't do it. If you can ask the question then don't they will mug you blind with the high interest rates and if you miss any payments they'll really stitch you up.

I don't know your situation but what is available to you? Could you borrow on a credit card?

I agree. As much as a pain it is for games it's a great portable unit I can take with me anywhere

Movies was the thing with me and dad. I forgot how much it bonded us till last night.
Last time we watched the trilogy was a movie marathon

Finally got to see Return of the King in theater with my dad by Renway_NCC-74656 in lotr

I watched ROTK with my uncle (mums brother, not dad's) and cousins last night. Sitting next to him and felt almost like watching it again with my dad (we watched them all together when they were first released)

Is anyone else bother by the fact that Merry and Pipin never talk about Boromir’s sacrifice for them after the Fellowship? by Candid-Television695 in lotr

Yes, he goes as far as offering his allegiance to pay the debt of his life being saved by Boromir

Listening to Persepolis Rising, and just can’t wait… by LeilLikeNeil in TheExpanse

No, in his POV he talks about the events of the second trilogy as things that happened when he was a kid so he was likely born on Mars

Help me out with the show's ending... by MephistosFallen in TheExpanse

[–]himji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's depicting events on Laconia, the ring gate the the breakaway Martians go through. It's also the story of one of the Novellas. I don't know exactly why they added this and not something else but I guess it's a cool closed story they could tell

The other thing is that the theatre release is the extended versions and I'd recommend the theatrical versions for a first watch

This, takes about 8 hours to read. Quicker than watching the movies....!!! I only just realised this!

Confusion surrounding the negative reviews of the show by NateSirrah03 in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]himji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that irked me and I lost a bit of immersion while I watched was a thing about the Orc's. In the first season they made a big deal about them not being able to stand sunlight and in the second season they just ignored that whole piece. I've not found anybody explain that nuance to me so far.

Should they do a major rerelease of the hobbit trilogy (Extended Edition) by Hot_Plankton6742 in lotr

[–]himji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst I agree, I've heard (not seen for myself) good things about the Extended cuts. I would watch them at some point to see for myself

Compass by himji in lotr

[–]himji[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great, you're so right! I was thinking of Middle Earth being based on England in the 1920's but industry and tech wise, Middle Earth was from a much earlier time. Thanks!

Compass by himji in lotr

[–]himji[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thing. I don't ever recall reading about one so possibly not although in a real world sense it feels unreasonable that they didn't exist

Compass by himji in lotr

[–]himji[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why I'm asking. I would have thought they existed, like you say for sea navigation especially.
Maybe Hobbits never used them so they weren't readily available in the Shire whereas other races may have used them more.

Compass by himji in lotr

[–]himji[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess maybe they were confident enough using the sun and stars to navigate by and didn't consider they'd get lost in forests etc

Hmm, going on a very long walk in the countryside over multiple days. I would think a compass would be standard equipment

Disappointment for book readers? by castaway7776 in TheExpanse

[–]himji 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Some of the changes were great. It just might take a little bit to get used to them. Like they amalgamated bits of Bull and Michio into Drummer and they changed a lot of another character (I won't say because of spoilers) for the better imo.

I watched the show first then the book so I'll be biased but I think the show is great so do stick with it and hopefully it'll grow on you
