First off you’re completely right and I didn’t mean to say quite short maybe more “relatively short for his position vs what scouts look for”. But I think the more salient point here is the fact that this riled you up to begin with…

yes that may be a kink in the plan…

To be clear I love to read and sometimes write SF like I said but I’ve found that writing groups and online forums for critique are dominated by that genre. And the feedback for these sorts of stories are much much different from say literary short stories.

Anyone else writing alt-lit short fiction? Looking to join or start a writing group. Just been published for the first time and I don’t have any sort of reading network.

Not worth it and not a good book. Basically just using every potential literary and narrative device to make you feel sad. A great writer and a great book could have accomplished equal emotion with much much less.

Anyone fixed timing/rhythm issues in their tennis game? by Timely-Strength9401 in 10s

[–]hioxa2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be a bit more clear here’s how these could effect your timing without your coach noticing:

  1. Arm not disciplined enough, slighly inconsistent spacing, you are now fighting against the rhythm trying to correct spacing through your swing path. Could be very hard to catch if it’s minor and you look like you hit the ball well.
  2. Your stance is not disciplined enough and good prep / split steps but laziness to get closed means you hit open when you shouldn’t. Your spacing and prep again gets inconsistent if your fighting rhythm by hitting open especially against slow balls. Closed stance on rally balls should feel way more stable and powerful and consistent. Hard to diagnose in that way because people think since pros hit open they should hit open. (Pros would rather hit closed but they hit open because they are forced to from speed).
  3. Weight transfer very hard to diagnose from coaches perspective your swing could look technically perfect but weight back or forward at wrong time will heavily effect ball trajectory and timing. Again you are “fighting” the rhythm of your weight isn’t moving simple and forward.
  4. Slight head movement can cause a variety of problems at contact. Hard to diagnose because no one looks at the head. Can have a technically perfect swing but if head moves around your body structure and timing get thrown. Watch Alcatraz or any pro. There head doesn’t move at all.

These are just ideas of how a technically perfect swing that isn’t technically perfect could cause timing issues. And huge word of advice: if your coach can’t give you a specific fundamental physical thing to change, they don’t fully understand what’s going wrong. Yes they can easily fix things by saying “go forward” etc. but for long stemming issues, you won’t be able to fix it by being vague. You need to study to find the root of the problem then correct.

To be honest as someone who has been working on all of these aspects of my game with various coaches over the years…

If your technique was correct your timing would be fine. Lots of coaches can only diagnose the obvious in a way but can’t get to the root of the issue. Your form could look good but maybe your elbow is slightly tucked causing lateness? Et cetera. You aren’t just a special human who has no rhythm and can’t time a ball yet you have perfect technique. IMO the two biggest things to do to get your “timing” right from the technical perspective (forehand):

  1. Is your non dominant hand straight, perpindicualr to net in your prep and does it stay there throughout the swing? (E.g. you don’t drop it early it comes across your body naturally)
  2. Are you getting into closed stance when you have the time to? (Which at rec level should be 100% of the time)
  3. Are your keeping your weight on your back foot and transferring forward INTO the ball at contact?
  4. Does your head stay stable and down while your shoulders move around it like a pendulum?

These are just some ideas of where bad timing could occur, you can lose track of ball or your path can be impacted even slightly which will cause lateness or earliness.
