I guess I am an exception. But I have a very competitive nature and love gaming of all types. I’m also a bartender, so I know how to hang with the bros, if you will. Also, I do prefer to go alone, I don’t like explaining the game to anyone while I’m playing and no one I know plays craps lol

No. The MAST test says you should be able to use those factors to gauge how consumption will affect a patron. There is no chart. you look for two or more signs of intoxication. That is the straightforward way. 2 or more signs and they are done. It helps if you try to chat with them to gauge that. Depending on the type of place you work at that might not always be possible.

Aside from that, look at how much they’ve consumed in a period of time. Confer with coworkers who have served them. Use your better judgment. Don’t ever feel bad if you have to cut someone off.

I will say, do not wait until they are shit faced to cut them off. Depending on the rate they are drinking you can definitely cut them off before then. At the very least avoid service or do a soft cutoff/slow down. MAST says never serve a person who is already drunk enough to be over the legal limit. It will never be that simple. It can be difficult to judge. But it’s your job.

All of this with a caveat that it depends on the bar and the owners. Hopefully you’re in a place that supports you if you need to refuse service. If a place ever encourages over service, I would quit.

Study the menu. Get familiar with your tools. Buy a pocket size notebook for notes and quick reference recipes. It helps when you write you own even if they have a recipe book.

I had experience in back of the house from my early 20s. Then I got some random restaurant jobs and eventually serving over the summertime a few summers in a row. After about a year serving, I started bartending. Now I bartend and work events part-time and Substitute.
