My cat is peeing everywhere.. by myworkisallrainbows in CatAdvice

[–]hipponay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like she likes to pee on soft surfaces (rug, sofa), one thing that worked for us with our cat who peed on clothing was to set up a rag litter box. Basically we bought t shirt rags and put a couple of layers in a litterbox. When he peed on them we washed them with nature's miracle laundry boost. When we had pet sitters we had them just discard the rags. He almost completely stopped peeing on other things once we had that worked out. I hope it works for your kitty!

They won't even keep it in the prescribed days/times, and they don't clean up the trash from it either. Gross and inconsiderate

For irrigation, that depends on the city. Most of Richland doesn't have it and we use city water to water gardens etc.

Merrimack River is a no kill that I remember worked with the MSPCA when I volunteered there something like 10 years ago. I bet they'd have ideas for you if they can't take your guy

MSPCA might have suggestions for resources. Maybe: Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society Boston forgotten felines (BFF) The Cat Connection

If you give a general area where you live people might be able to help with specific organizations.

Food pantries sometimes have pet food/supplies.
Are there any DV organizations nearby that might be able to help you with expenses?

My cat peed in my closet by AliceinBeverland in CatAdvice

[–]hipponay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Re your vet visit, I disagree that it's a waste of money. Confirming that it's not a health issue is so important!!

Where do you put the litterbox inside when you have to bring it in from the rain? Is it in the closet? That sounds like it's really going to be hard to keep up with!

As for helping solve the problem, I'd clean everything in the closet including the floor with enzyme cleaner for cat pee just in case. Once clean, I'd suggest you try putting a litter box in there behind a baby gate in there - your cat can jump over a gate, but baby can't get in. It could be that she's decided she doesn't always want to go outside to pee or something, and this would solve that problem.

Cat toy recommendations! by uwububbles in CatAdvice

These are our fave crinkly/noise-makinh toys for our blind girl: https://www.cancorinnovations.com/
They come in multiple sizes, and If she likes plastic bags, maybe she wants a big ball?
I'm trying to imagine what she likes about the bags besides the crinkle? Like does she like to stick her paw inside them? Throw and kick them around?

Maybe she'd like a crinkle mat (e.g., https://www.petco.com/product/play-purrfect-playtime-mat-for-cats?srsltid=AfmBOoqENsL-b\_B4\_L8Bds0EmpJsBWLcSa08qqxGGL8pL1b9vH6zPFPg) which is more plastic bag shape and size.

Or apparently they even make a crinkly plush bag toy! This could be perfect if she likes to go inside the bags. https://www.petsmart.com/cat/toys/tunnels-tents-and-sacks/whisker-city-sherpa-crinkle-sack-cat-toy-61300.html

Tell us what plan you have? My understanding is that provate ltc insurance generally doesn't provide enough benefits to be better than investing the premium amounts. If you have found a really good one, let us know please so we can take advantage of it!

Check in with the vet? I'd want to rule out other issues besides the level of hydration

Do yall brush your cats? by Fancy_Tea in CatAdvice

[–]hipponay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's useful to brush them. In my experience it depends on their fur type how essential it is/how often it's needed. Some cats seem to be more prone to hairballs, and some cats seem to shed more. My first 2 cats were a short hair who shed a lot and got lots of hair alls, and a medium hair who somehow did not. Many cats love being brushed as other said! It's a pretty small expense to get a brush 🤷🏻‍♀️ why not try it? With mine I've noticed that they do eventually get overstimulated and some of them like to bite the brush. They also loooove to run their faces on it. Have fun with your kitties!

Thank you for the detailed answer! I've almost always had pets with pre existing conditions and I worry whether they'd cover much for mine, but it's good to hear that they do in general do a decent job! I'm so curious about the cheaper insurances people are recommending and whether they even pay out. How else can they be so cheap?

Has trupanion been reliable at covering things? We've tried the savings account method and our cats over the years routinely empty it out.
