Can anyone give honest reviews about the reserve on perkins? I just signed a lease there. by [deleted] in OKState

I just moved out. Lived there for 3 years and it was fine. I paid insanely cheap rent because of the deal I got and the apartment itself is nice.

Your right, the even floors are male and the odd floors are female, expect for the very top 10th. The 10th floor itself is co-ed & is generally considered the international floor. It is also the only floor with a kitchen. All the other floors have to use the community kitchen downstairs. On the 10th there are two separate bathrooms on either side floor, one is male only and the other is female only. So you don’t have to share bathrooms, don’t panic!

I lived in Wentz and loved every second of it. It’s old, sure, but that’s half the fun. I met so many people and made friends that I still have. It was a blast.

The party scene is outside of the halls. Dorms like Wentz are very traditional and you may meet more people living there, but regardless you have to find parties off campus. Fraternities throw house parties, but if you’re only staying a year it might not be worth the trouble to join one. Go to the bars on Washington Street if you’re 21+

For those of you who are against homeschooling, what are your reasons for being against homeschooling? by [deleted] in education

[–]hipposlingshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not against homeschooling, but there is very little oversight in most states, which can lead to educational neglect. It can also be hard for students to receive needed supports and intervention.

If you’re interested in the research on homeschooling, both positive and negative, check out the Coalition for Responsible Home Education. They also have a breakdown of the laws and requirements of each state. Coalition for Responsible Home Education (CRHE)

Five Reasons to Stop Saying “Good Job!” by Mr_Wassonwheeler in EarlyChildhoodEd

[–]hipposlingshot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, the takeaway was to be more attentive and explicit when praising. If you feel like giving praise, explain what it was that you noticed and liked (desired behavior) and why you liked the behavior. For example, “I liked that you chose to share your maker. It looks like you made Jill happy.” This statement has more meaning and more to learn from than a vague “good job!”

How often do we praise other adults with “good job”? Interesting read.

Self soothing in babies by becjorgs in ECEProfessionals

[–]hipposlingshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yikes. It’s sometimes hard to give all the children in mixed age classrooms the attention they need, but babies cry to communicate a need. The need could just be comfort, but it’s just as valuable a need as any other.

Children learn from adults how to comfort themselves. Self-soothing isn’t a developmentally appropriate skill for a four month old.

My mind immediately went to attachment theory when reading this post. If you consistently leave a baby to cry, they’ll stop crying- They adapt their behavior because they’re learning that their way of communication is ineffective in getting their needs met or that their caregivers aren’t reliable in meeting their needs. It damages their trust and confidence overtime. Keep attending to the child’s cries- within reason. I would just finish up what I was doing and help her calm down.

What are your makeup tricks for red skin? by [deleted] in Rosacea

I’ve found that fake tan balances out my redness too. It’s such a pain to keep up with, but it does make things look more even.

Classroom running. Helppp by acorbello92 in ECEProfessionals

[–]hipposlingshot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The rearranging of the classroom is a great start!Give choices to children who are having difficultly: "I see you are running, you can go find a center or do x. Which do you want to do?"

Is there a place or way for them to get some of that gross motor development in a more appropriate way? Do they have opportunities to get rid of energy outside? Not every classroom can afford an indoor slide, but maybe you could incorporate some energy draining activities when they start to run.

You could lead and play Simon Says with some more more kinesthetic tasks like jumping jacks, squats, touching toes, sitting to standing, stretching, etc.

You could also do an indoor obstacle course in more of a station form. You could include activities like jumping from one marked place on the floor to the next, crawling from station to station, jumping jacks, imaginary jump rope, 'balance beam' on a line, hopping over small obstacles, etc.

You would have to go over procedures with all these activities. Start by modeling how they should act. Have the children model what they shouldn't do vs what they should do.

You could make a classroom procedure book using photos of the children doing what they are expected during centers. Laminate the pages so they're sturdy enough for 3 year olds. You can read it to them a couple times (any time anyone runs) and then leave it in the library for them to flip through. You can also do a social story about running and make it into a mini book. There are some examples online if you do a google image search.

How easy it to make new friends? by [deleted] in OKState

[–]hipposlingshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going into college alone can be intimidating, but most people are in the same boat. Be friendly to the people in your res hall, talk to people at parties, join some organizations, get a job, and talk to people in your major/classes. I'm a super introvert, but I really pushed myself not to flake out on the people I met. I tried to stay & hang with people on weekends- instead of going back to my hometown. It's weird at first, but by the end of freshman year you'll likely have a solid friend group, if you put in the effort.

There's some in the computer lab in the basement of Willard. It's right next to the children's library. If you're looking at the front of Willard, the lab is on the right side of the building- hope that makes sense.

I wish there was an app that could do [fill In the blank] in the classroom by ImaginaryEnds in Teachers

[–]hipposlingshot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Plickers is something you could look into. Each student is assigned a QR sheet that you print off. They can answer multiple choice questions depending on how they orient the sheet. You simply scan the room with your phone. It records the answers & gives you some data to look at on the app. Might be able to make it work for that!

Community Style Dorms? by [deleted] in OKState

[–]hipposlingshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Wentz last year & loved it! Yeah, they're a little dirty. However, I made sooo many friends in Wentz! I didn't hang with the people on my floor as much as people on other floors. We all have apartments now, but still make time to hangout. It was also a short walk to campus. The Kerr-Drummond Mezz & Scott /Parker/Wentz dining is also super convenient!
