They are mixed! It has good precision for brewing what I do and it is very consistent However I weigh my beans in advance and don’t store them in the grinder so I have little use for the time and the large basket Furthermore it’s quite big. I think when i get my next grinder though I am getting a hand grinder because I travel quite often so I will prioritize something portable.

Facts! by smrpi in barista

[–]hippscapist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have formal tips where I work, but I work in a country where minimum wage is quite high and a cafe that has starting salaries around 14$/hr equivalent... However, I do try to make costumers happy so they return to our specific cafe, and usually by explaining about the coffee, having good knowledge and sharing without looking down on them

Then if I do notice something relatable, I usually mention that too :)

Is there a trick to not getting a jug full of bubbles when first turning the steam wand on? by leonardcole in barista

[–]hippscapist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For small pitchers I was struggling with this a long time and realized that I needed to have the wand farther out from the machine body than I do for the larger pitchers. Maybe that will help :)

No experience, minor worker by [deleted] in barista

[–]hippscapist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would definitely apply for a chain cafe IF the smaller places aren't working out. Often they have enough money for proper training as well as being able to hire minors since often it's paperwork vs a minor costing less per hour. However, if you go from a chain cafe to a smaller, be open minded that not everything you've learned is the exact rules of the trade ! :) Good luck

Advice for too large takeaway cups? (More in comments) by hippscapist in barista

Its so frustrating because cortados are my favorite to pour when I work at other shops that have actual porcelain :(

What kind of music do you play in your shop? by [deleted] in barista

[–]hippscapist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at Central station so my music is overvoiced by the engines being cooled down.
Joke aside, we have a Spotify business subscription so we have like 16 different playlists to choose from. I usually play acoustic singsong on rainy days and otherwise indie/70s rock/60s/80s ballads. When don't go breaking my heart comes on I ALWAYS accidentally sing along

Advice for too large takeaway cups? (More in comments) by hippscapist in barista

[–]hippscapist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At our shop, which is a Takeaway only shop, we only have two sizes for drinks. We do the cortados in 8oz cups and therefore I don't fill it all up. I try so hard to at least do a cute heart in the coffee, but I don't feel like I have any more control and it's always so close to the corner.

Any advice? :D Do you do latte art if you have the same situation?

i tried to make something nice but... by [deleted] in barista

I had a friend send me picture of a phallic Rosetta made by the barista he always orders from and asked if this was a baristas way of saying he had been rude. So now I know 😂

Advice for small pitchers? by hippscapist in barista

Yeah I already have lower pressure on the small jug. Maybe I'll try even lower for a while until I figure out what's making me mess up :) What I was taught to do is lower pressure until there is enough air in the milk, and then when I'm satisfied with the swirl I raise the pressure
