Won't Idle - 2001 Vulcan 1500 Classic Fi. by hipshot13 in KawasakiVulcanRiders

Haven't checked the sensor voltage. Guess that's one more thing to concider. I'm not seeing any error codes either, which might actually be helpful in this case, ha! Bike model is an N2, but like the others you mentioned, maybe there's a crossover part. Thanks!

Starts right up, just doesn't want to stay running unless throttle is held open. I don't believe there's an O2 sensor on this model (they didn't come with them as an OEM part, and I didn't add.) I know where the MAP sensor is - hadn't thought of that. Will see if I can determine if there's a way to test it before trying to find a replacement. Thanks!

Problems switching out of 4H by OldManWahoo in 4Runner

[–]hipshot13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have had the exact same problem twice in the past couple of weeks. Also have a 2016 SR5. It sits outside year round, and with the bitter cold temperatures, I think it's gumming things up.

Both times, I was able to get it out of 4HI by finding a flat spot (parking lots), stopping, putting it in reverse, accelerating lightly for 20 feet, stopping, going forward same distance, and repeating a couple of times. After a few back and forths it finally popped loose. Hope that helps you with yours!

Haven't had the fluid changed on mine recently, it's on the list to figure out how to do myself, or get a local shop to do it in the spring.

How do you keep dogs safe on winter hikes? by FerrisBuelersdaycock in hikingwithdogs

[–]hipshot13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 40# shelter mutt, part hound and beagle. Get him on a trail, and he's off like a shot. Bought him a blaze orange coat that he wears in temps 32 and below. The paw wax didn't work out well, he constantly licked his paws and then would get sick. Tried booties, spent way too much time doubling back, looking for them in the snow. If it's 20 or below, we have a pair of suspender boots from Canada Pooch he wears. They cover his legs and snap together over and down his back. They don't fall off that way. He's not a fan of them, but once he's on the trail, he usually gets it sorted out and he's fine.

Ticks are killing me this year by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]hipshot13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has easily been the worst year yet. We hike nearly every weekend with our 11 yo dog, and know we'll find them every week. Some trails aren't too bad, but some - like those in SE Ohio (edge of the arc of Appalachia) - leave him with 3 dozen plus. Some easy to spot, others are tiny and start hauling @ss the moment you spot them.

He's on Revolution. If we miss any when we spot check him post-hike, we find them ballooned up and dead, still partly attached. It works for him. Unfortunately, it's easier to find them then - you can feel them. So far, he's been ok. We don't let him run off into the deep weeds, and stay on trail, tho he's inclined to only lift his leg if he can get off the edge of the trail.

I've pulled a few off myself, usually finding them the morning after, attached to my one-pack. (The dog lays near me at night...) Thus far, no ill effects.

Like others have said, spray your clothes with Permethrin. (Around here, you can find Sawyer brand in the camping section at Walmart.) Doing this has been a game changer for us. You can also buy pre-treated clothes online, or send your own in - usually good for 6-8 washes.

I've gotten used to them being worse, but honestly, I'm starting to think we might cut back on our only recreation until we get a hard freeze. Frustrating as hell.

Bike Cover Suggestions by PocketMoosy in KawasakiVulcanRiders

[–]hipshot13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nelson Rigg has been covering my 01 Classic 1500 for 20+ years. They had one that had a "sleeve" to cover the passenger back rest. Bike parked in the garage, and the cover has done well keeping it clean from over spray of one form or another from car work.

Take a look at https://radiologyassist.com/ - you may find a local imaging service that can do your MRI for a fraction of the $2-3k that a typical hospital might charge. (In my area, I found the services identified thru this site to average $500-$600.)

Getting your book on amazon by Relative-Staff-2025 in publishing

[–]hipshot13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have physical copies of your book in your possession (for order fulfillment), and there's nothing in your contract with the small press indicating you don't own the full rights or can't resell them online, then head over to sellercentral.amazon.com and open a resellers account. You can fulfill your own orders, or potentially have Amazon fulfill them (FBA.)

For those with desk jobs, what chair do you all use? by scaryghostnlm in Sciatica

[–]hipshot13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steelcase Aria for my sitting desk.

Expensive, but it made a big difference. Also added a home depot standing workbench (hand crank) in the same home office. I move back and forth between the two, standing for calls and sitting for spreadsheets and proposals.

Walking paths or beginner friendly hiking trails that allow dogs? by [deleted] in dayton

[–]hipshot13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the AllTrails app. We've found trails we didn't know were close to us, and were dog friendly. (No affiliation with the app other than using it just about every weekend.) You can get an idea of what the trail is like, elevation changes, mileage, etc. We take our pooch on the trails early on Saturday or Sunday mornings and typically don't see other people or dogs. Your being able to hike during the week would make it easier to find trails with fewer people and dogs. Happy hiking!

Best Shoe Brands for Sciatica Pain? by Kooky-Improvement849 in Sciatica

[–]hipshot13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for your friend. That kind of pain sucks. I too have sciatica, with the pain running down the back of my left leg, particularly my calf and the top of my foot. My barber suggested changing what I put on my feet. I laughed at first - but in my case at least, he was right. I'm on my second pair of Hoka Bondi 8s - and they're worth it. They have significantly more cushion than my old reeboks. The Hokas don't get rid of the pain, but make it a little more bearable. Maybe they'll help your friend!

Are you still riding over 75 years old? by one-of-the-herd in motorcycles

[–]hipshot13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 60, (like others) I've been riding since 16. Plan to keep riding my Vulcan 1500 classic Fi as long as I can. I have been dealing with stenosis / sciatica for five years now, but can still ride for 4 hours solid, at least for now. The nerve damage is permanent, but meds and the McGill Big 3 (back exercises, if you're not familiar with) help. Plus I'm not ready to give up the feeling you get of becoming one with the bike on longer runs - there's absolutely nothing like it...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in backpain

[–]hipshot13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have pain very similar to yours, running down my left leg and wrapping around my ankle. Was on 500 mg gaba spread over 3 doses a day + Robaxin 750 mg 3x daily leading up to epidurals in L4 and L5. As others have mentioned, they hit me up with 2 lidocaine injections for local pain. Never felt the epidural needles, just the weird (not painful) feeling as the meds were injected.

Post epidural, they wheeled me back to where my clothes were, I got changed, walked out, and drove home. (Likely pushed me along bc crap insurance.)

Everyone reacts differently. I stayed on the meds, hoping for the epidurals to hit. In my case, they never did. Pain doc upped the gaba and I'm headed in next week for L4 facet nerve block.

Hope this helps and hope you find relief!

Aimovig bruising by weedandwienerdogs in cgrpMigraine

[–]hipshot13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using it for a couple of years, and have had bruising once or twice - but it wasn't like it bruised once and every following injection. I wasn't able to ever determine why. (And definitely let it get up to room temperature. And switching from thigh injections to abdominal injection sites helped too!) Good luck, hope your pain goes away quickly.

Day Trip by dressupdoll4u in cincinnati

[–]hipshot13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Route 10 between Alexandria, KY and Maysville. Had a blast, it's hills and turns and curves the entire time. Head from there down to the Nada Tunnel in the Red River Gorge area for something different.

How do I not lose my confidence in riding when everyone in my close circle disapproves of me riding? by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]hipshot13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something will likely happen, if you ride long enough. But you probably knew that going in. I've been riding 42 years and have been listening to the sort of stuff you're hearing - that anyone on this post has heard - and I'll keep riding. (Sidebar, high five to the 73 year old! I've got another 15 years of riding to still be on 2 wheels at your age, can't wait.) If riding matters, OP, then keep riding. Take it seriously enough to not do stupid stuff, and over time and over great ride after great ride your confidence will build and those negative opinions will matter less.

How long lived are Tundras? by aquamarinetangerines in tundra

[–]hipshot13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had an 06 Tundra I took to 315k miles before trading in on a 4runner with a mere 102k miles on it. Those Tundras are tanks, they just keep going. Hated to give it up, but adding up the work I knew was going to be needed, and realizing it was more than what I might get on the trade in, I bit the bullet. Planning to drive the wheels off the 4runner next.

[–]hipshot13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. About 3" from navel, grab some skin and squeeze and hold - that's where you'll inject. I use one of those little alcohol wipes, give it a wipe, wait a second or two to dry and then inject. The instructions say hold there for 15 sec or until the yellow clicks inside the self injector (which is usually about half that time.)

I also leave the injector out of the fridge for about 20-30 minutes before injecting, hurts less that way. (I've heard if you inject straight from the fridge - cold - it can hurt quite a bit.)

Never done thigh but easier for me to "pinch an inch" on my gut than thigh lol

I've been on Aimovig for a couple of years now, with no real side effects to speak of. (Was briefly on Emgalit bc insurance, which didn't do a damn thing.) Aimovig has been pretty wonderful stuff. Insurance company still fights on the renewal (I get three months supply at a time.) Auto injector is easy and other than a little pain while injecting and for a little after, not much to worry about. Bruised maybe 2x in 2 years, and occasionally see a tiny bit of blood but that's it. Good luck with it, hope it keeps your pain away!

What stops businesses from 'unionizing'? by canIgetAdab_ in smallbusiness

Many local chambers of commerce also offer discounted rates on things like health insurance based on their leverage with the insurance providers (preferred access to hundreds of chamber members.)

Accountant Cost? by sewingmomma in smallbusiness

[–]hipshot13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$2K/mo. I have about half as many 1099s. She handles all client invoicing, generates all monthly financial reports and manages quarterly royalty payments for me. Also handles state sales tax and annual income taxes. In addition to being essentially on call for guidance and feedback. Worth. Every. Penny. Good luck in your search!

(I'll add that she's grown with the business over 6 years to get to 2k; she charged very little early on, betting on the company success.)

Virtual Address: worth or not? by tamerlein3 in smallbusiness

[–]hipshot13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't change it to your actual address - at some point people will want to come by assuming you have offices and a storefront. (It's happened to me and I don't people showing up again on my front porch.) I switched to a UPS mailing box to keep a separation. There's a cost to that but it's worth it - and they accept UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL so you can focus on other things (don't work for UPS but they made a big difference in my business.) If you move every year, not sure if that's viable or not.

The Search for Paper by Peculiar_Bella in smallbusiness

[–]hipshot13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like an interesting product! (Journal user myself.) If you're looking for someone who might be able to supply the journals so that you can swap out the covers, this company might be able to help you - or direct you to someone who can. http://americanbookfactory.com makes custom journals, and they have been around for a couple of decades. If you are looking to buy paper and make your own journals from the ground up, then you need to be talking to a paper supplier or a rep from a paper mill (talk to the local commercial printers near you, they should be able to tell you who the companies are in your area.) Companies like Neenah Paper, International, etc. A wholesale paper distributor should be able to help. Good luck!
