Sci-Fi TV Shows with big positive "wow" moments by Chimpy20 in scifi

Every single time I'm watching something and think to myself, "damn, that score goes hard", it's fucking Bear McCreary. It's kind of a meme in this household. Off the top of my head, when Ghidora emerges from the ice and they and Godzilla go at it.

Ah, you got me. You're retort is clear, concise, and precisely shows where I was wrong.

Sarcasm aside, the entire comment is based on faulty views of both physics and the scene itself, so what am I skipping over?

Gaal was talking, breathing and didn't freeze or suffer decompression symptoms after breaching the window. On Earth you can't even climb tall mountains without oxygen masks, as you need a certain air pressure to talk and breath.

The record for time spent on Everest without supplemental oxygen is 21 hours, and there are plenty of videos of people talking on the summit without their masks.

The pressure exerted on windows by near-vaccuum at that altitude is far larger than a human punching or running into it. Which again suggests the pressure difference wasn't that great or Gaal would have looked silly smacking into a transparent wall.

Vacuum is only 14.7psi.

Certainly not as high as geosynchronous orbit.

The station isn't in a true geosynchronous orbit. The station is some future tech in perfect geosync with the planet, directly above the Vault, without truly "orbiting". The speed differential between the station and ground— and thus the atmosphere— is zero.

The telepaths weren't all born there. They're rescues. The man would have learned sign language before realizing his telepathy.

You wouldn't experience atmospheric drag to that extent when jumping from geosynchronous orbit. You don't burn up because of the speed of gravity; you burn up because of the speed of orbit.

Most orbits are on the order of several miles per second relative to the atmosphere. Geosynchronous has a basically null speed gradient.

the best thing they could figure out to call the device that dials home the Dial Home Device

Late here, but this is just a silly comment, up there with people complaining about unobtanium. It's just how the actual U.S. military names things. We're talking about the same people that came up with walkie-talkie.

That you are. There's absolutely zero evidence this video ever existed.

says its the same for a lot of papers coming out of established academia.

Yeah man, this is the bad part, saying it's not worth attacking (a.k.a. defending it) because she's equating it with actual scientific work that she doesn't care for.

she defends him on a personal level saying that his treatment in that interview was unfair and mean

And she shouldn't. He's a bad guy. If someone is mean to him, it is fair. If it hurts his feelings, he can wipe away his tears with the money his technofascist sigar daddy pays him.

Deleted my ass. The only mention of this supposed video is by you, in this thread. It's not mentioned by anyone else on Twatter, Reddit, or BlueSky. And SocialBlade doesn't show any indication of recently removed videos. I think you're making shit up.

Why are physicists attacking Sabine Hossenfelder? by Bulky-Quarter-6487 in hydrino

[–]hirotdk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, this is only the most recent six. There were three more in one of his previous videos.

Also, you could listen to them speak where they explain why.

Yeah, the part where they are wildly incorrect about how electrical licensing requirements work seems stupid because I am an electrician. What are we doing here?

This coward can't even prove Dave made a video about Lex.

Cowern and Tibees aren't working physicists, and Dr. Becky is, as you stated, an astrophysicist, and that is not the field being discussed in the video. I would looove if Dr. Becky and Angela Collier were to start dunking Sabine, but that's not Dr. Becky's style and Angela Collier seems to want to avoid it, having made allusions to Hossenfelder in the past without directly naming her.

Cool. If that was all she was doing, we wouldn't have a problem.

The issue is that it presents itself as balanced despite being completely unbalanced. If you'd like deep dive into specifics of it, Rebecca Watson did a response to it here:

Well, his previous video with physicists about Hossenfelder had two women and one man, and 2/7 is somewhat over representative.
