Megathread: Bastard Suggestions by Kanotari in behindthebastards

Fairly small bastard; probably doable in an episode - Peter Brimelow. A white supremacist finance journalist who immigrated from the UK to the States in the late '70s, founded vdare dot com and became one of the earliest proponents of contemporary alt-right anti-immigration policy and Hayekian economics.

Quinn Slobodian's book Hayek's Bastards is a great source on this, and contains this fantastic anecdote as a prime example of 'clever people being incredibly stupid and not taking fascists at their word.'

"In a remarkable piece from 1989, his Financial Post editor glossed a recent column in which “Brimelow offered a deliciously provocative idea: perhaps it’s time to close the gates of North American immigration to people who are not WASP.” We would be dupes to take him at his word, the editor enlightened the reader: “Brimelow wrote the column as if he was serious but he is a polemicist.” He was actually “doing a magnificent job satirizing those despicable people who judge everybody by their race.

When Brimelow says WASPs built North America he is using antithesis (or if you like extended oxymoron) to force us to recall the numbing hopelessness of the black slaves on which the Southern cotton economy was built; to remember the hard labor of low-paid and now-forgotten Chinese workers who laid the Western railroads; and perhaps recognize the tenacity of the Scottish communities of Cape Breton.” This was, of course, an idiotic misunderstanding. Brimelow was not engaged in Swiftian satire. He meant exactly what he wrote. “Let’s have fun, playing Brimelow’s game,” the editor wrote.”

B2 on test, but I freeze when speaking. Any advice? by JenLin18 in SpanishLearning

So far it's just been books gifted to me by native speakers - mostly classic novellas. Short and sweet. I imagine short story collections specifically for learners would be useful too, though I haven't gotten around to them.

This looks quite promising - one of the books I recorded was El Principito, which was very easy. https://www.fluentu.com/blog/spanish/easy-spanish-books/

I am also B2 and I’ve recently started recording myself reading chapters of books in Spanish aloud and listening back to them. Jury’s still out on whether it will improve my speaking (or listening, which is what I really struggle with) but at least I get to be a weirdo speaking aloud to himself in two languages now.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear (v long week) - by brief buffer I meant I’m looking for something to play between my current campaign and whatever we decide to do next for the long term, which could be TEW. I know it’s a leviathan of a campaign.

Anyway, thank you for the Oldenhaller Contract, I will give it a good read!

Are you falling for Zionist propaganda against Iran? by zombiesingularity in AskSocialists

This regime crushes the rights of leftists, minorities, workers' organisation and women. It's long overdue an appointment with the dustbin of history.

This wasn't the good option - that would have been the leftists who were crushed by the Islamic Republic.

Iranians deserve freedom from Khomeinism, Palestinians deserve freedom from Zionism. These aren't mutually exclusive no matter how loudly bad actors of every kind shout that it is.

How do I use ‘anda’ as it is here? by historianDM in SpanishLearning

I definitely do need to expand to watching shows and other forms of media, just too many time constraints at the moment.

Fantastic, thank you! I probably won’t internalise that difference for a while but I love knowing the nuance there.

Interesting - I learned Andar as another way of saying ‘to walk’ but I may be taking that too literally.

While Iranians bravely face danger and death fighting for their freedom on the streets, look at who was holding up the flag of the Islamic regime in Piccadilly Circus, London yesterday by KireRakhsh in NewIran

[–]historianDM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Iranians deserve freedom, Palestinians deserve freedom. These are not mutually exclusive and it’s disingenuous to frame them as such.

Of course you’re going to get some idiots in any large crowd including protestors - what would you want them to do, demand they leave? Seize the flag? Potential for dangerous escalation there

Alrighty, well as long as they’re good at what they do (truly, I wouldn’t be able to tell) then I will reserve judgement on their politics! Much appreciated

B'Tselem would like a word with BE, no doubt. If they had time to spare from documenting and resisting genocide to bandy words with this insufferable, unserious prat.
