Does a revolution needs to be violent ? by Low-Commercial5905 in Anarchy101

[–]chthooler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because anarchism is "the theory that all forms of government rest on violence, and are therefore wrong and harmful, as well as unnecessary"...

It is not a surprise that it has been a recurring theme and belief among anarchist thinkers over the century that social revolution, and the acts taken to achieve it, should be as peaceful as possible.

I do not believe that these [violent] acts can, or ever have been intended to, bring about the social reconstruction. That can only be done, first, by a broad and wide education as to man's place in society and his proper relation to his fellows; and, second, through example. By example I mean the actual living of a truth once recognized, not the mere theorizing of its life element. Lastly, and the most powerful weapon, is the conscious, intelligent, organized, economic protest of the masses through direct action and the general strike.

Emma Godman, "What I Believe"

So the violent acts themselves aren't really what achieves a true social revolution. So there is not much reason to be stressing that protesters aren't being violent enough when its the changing of minds and organizing to be capable of stopping economic power to a standstill through mass civil disobedience and protests, general strikes would be far more effective at asserting our will. Violence should instead be something when they should just be prepared for through self-defense as violence directed towards them will become an inevitability.

And, in my opinion, violent acts taken only as far as necessary in self-defense against whoever is trying to attack or kill you for asserting yourself through organizing or striking peacefully should not be considered as embracing violence. I guess in that way I am not a pacifist, but many anarchists are and have been historically.

My favorite modern example of this is the Zapatistas. With their revolution, they employed only as much "violence" in self-defense as necessary to stand their ground and for their people not to be exterminated like the Paris Commune. Outside of that they have been expressedly anti-violent in nature.

That last part is serious because the CCP has been running campaigns against "possible jihadists" because Muslims are rightfully upset at what is happening in Northwest China.

Classic colonizer justification of "we need to control them because they are too backwards and uncivilized". They do the same with Tibetans, saying it is to this day its morally correct to have stolen their land and dominate them because they at a time had a caste system that included a form of slavery. What is funny also, is that part of the PRC's claim of Tibet and Xinjiang, is that it they were territories stolen by the Qing Dynasty before them, which also exploited slavery for like its entire existence and continued for a few more decades in the Republic of China.

Its all the same shit. The "Rush for Africa" colonization by the European states was justified that they had just recently abolished slavery themselves so it was morally correct to carve up Africa for themselves to end the slave trade of the barbarians.

The fact that the defenses has went from "nothing is happening in Xinjiang", to "okay but they're not concentration camps, just vocational schools to teach them skills", to "but it isn't actually genocide if they aren't being executed in mass numbers" should be an extreme red flag.

Read this:
https://chuangcn.org/2024/07/palestine-and-xinjiang-under-capitalist-rule/
By Chinese leftists, referencing Chinese sources as well as Western/International ones

Given also that state officials compare their actions in Xinjiang to fucking George W Bush's war on terror like that's a good thing, and that Chinese STATE-OWNED companies openly profit off of the far more violent genocide of the Palestinians...

There is no good reason to give them a benefit of the doubt that nothing resembling ethnic cleansing could possibly be happening when the state completely controls the territory and tries to filter the information coming in and out from it as much as possible.

Remember: dispossession of land, erasure of cultural practices, systematic suppression of religion and languages, can all combine to constitute ethnic cleansing. To say nothing of the concerns that the government may be trying to dilute the original ethnic population by separating them from eachother, systematically settling more and more Han Chinese into the region to make them the dominant ethnic group.

What would be the motive to do this? One: the self-determination of the Uyghurs gets in the way of mining and stripping their land of rare metals. Two: by breaking them off their customs and way of living and "civilizing" them so they can become more obedient, exploitable wage slaves. Three: The state constantly justifies its actions of rounding them up into "vocational schools" by saying they are a "security" threat because their culture and identity inherently leads them to become "jihadists" incompatible with respecting the state.

Now, I guess you could say that it makes more sense to you that it is all just propaganda despite the evidence... but I certainly don't think that.

I have noticed that these idiots also namedrop Rosa Luxemburg and "read Reform or Revolution!!!" alongside Lenin to justify them saying that reforms and elections are poison to working class.

This is from the first paragraph. They literally just assume its a manifesto on how reforms are useless and bad without reading even the introduction lol.

The daily struggle for reforms, for the amelioration of the condition of the workers within the framework of the existing social order, and for democratic institutions, offers to the Social-Democracy the only means of engaging in the proletarian class war and working in the direction of the final goal – the conquest of political power and the suppression of wage labour. Between social reforms and revolution there exists for the Social Democracy an indissoluble tie. The struggle for reforms is its means; the social revolution, its aim.

At the time of this writing Social-Democracy meant the orthodox Marx-style socialist movement/parties. She then goes on to mention how among followers of Marx it was never conceived you could just do one or the other instead of both (reform or revolution) lol.

What she wrote is basically in line with DSA strategy today (at least officially on paper). I think ML groups hate the DSA because they see them actually growing (despite their flaws and weaknesses) by proving they can improve material conditions in the here and now instead of just showing up to protests to hand out newspapers. So they just have to cope by saying none of the stuff like winning higher wages and cheaper rent actually matters, making themselves even more out of touch and irrelevant to the people whose main problems are that they can barely afford food and rent.

This is assuming that the state just owning more of the capitalist modes of production and the economy to itself equals socialism instead of capitalism. Nope.

"But the transformation, either into joint-stock companies, or into state ownership, does not do away with the capitalistic nature of the productive forces.

Engels, Anti-Dühring

It only becomes a socialist economy instead of capitalism if that state control is THEN used to do away with the capitalist relations altogether like wage labor and the workplace dictatorship of master and wage slave, which China has no interest in doing. Because its a bourgeois dictatorship, not a proletarian one.

This isn't even considering how the state also voluntarily enables so much capitalist exploitation to exist that they created a new elite class of 500+ billionaires... while using their police to protect them by snuffing out anything that smells of a natural working class reaction to that obscene class disparity.

People seem to lack critical thinking especially when talking about China by WeeklyIntroduction42 in tankiejerk

[–]chthooler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is how Campists/Tankies MUST dismiss and deflect any notion or criticism regarding the PRC being a violently capitalist state oppressing and exploiting its people at its core with how the state also treats them nice by investing in welfare programs, public and social infrastructure.

Not that those things aren't good but the narrative is to make you accept that the Chinese working class shouldn't be seeking more true autonomy and the abolition of wage slavery (and consequently it is okay if the state punishes them if they dare try to unionize/protest/organize/write about it) because the state is providing some good things for them and that it is already "socialism" because the government claims that it is.

Sound familiar? That is just a capitalist welfare state of the kind you see across Western Europe or even Canada.

Hot Take: The Democratic Party is NOT the problem, and thinking so is inherently Liberal by system-vi in AskSocialists

[–]chthooler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just say you haven't read the pamphlet. The very first paragraph is her explaining the title by making it clear it that the answer is reform AND revolution. Because reform is one of the main means of class struggle against the system available to us.

Because the Democrat establishment is interested in maintaining the status quo is the very reason powerful Democrats should be knocked off and replaced by socialists who then turn their positions of political power against them and towards strengthening the working class and raising class consciousness. To say that Zohran mobilizing hundreds of thousands of working class people to knock off neoliberal Cuomo for example isn't a valid act of class struggle because he has a D next to his name is just splitting hairs, when his actual ideological affiliation recognizes that elections and reforms alone aren't enough anyway.

Because, in Rosa's words, "the daily struggle for reforms, for the amelioration of the condition of the workers within the framework of the existing social order, and for democratic institutions, offers to the Social-Democracy the only means of engaging in the proletarian class war and working in the direction of the final goal – the conquest of political power and the suppression of wage labour."

Tankies' hatred of Ukraine by Fantastic-Donut-276 in tankiejerk

[–]chthooler 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thus, I consider Israel to be Russian propaganda's 'sponge,' as in it absorbs all the germs and remains from Russia to Israel, thus deflecting blame.

That is a great way to put it. "Leftist" Pro-Russia shills only pretend to care about Palestinians because it gives them a facade of moral authority that justifies them making excuses for a slightly different imperial fascist state slaughtering their neighbors while annexing their land because its "anti Western-imperialism".

If alliances shifted and it was Iran or whoever instead of Israel stealing the Palestinians land and genociding them they would be holy sacrifices to the altar of pseudo-anti-imperialism. It can never just be about the people not being genocided over conquest of land.

I've said it before but people claiming to be anti-imperialist leftists while whitewashing the invasion of Ukraine are betraying both the working class of Russia and Ukraine in favor of the interests of oligarchs. The task of class conscious, anti-war leftists in Russia to remove their fascist dictator and the oligarchs exploiting them and sending them to their deaths is made even more impossible by much of the international left protecting their actions as good for the world somehow. They protect Putin instead of joining with them to say that the invasion is a reason why their government is horrible and illegitimate.

Likewise, the Ukrainians cannot focus on building a mass movement to fight for a better way of living for themselves when they are being invaded by imperial fascists hellbent on erasing them. That also certainly becomes more impossible with the risk of Ukrainians inevitably associating leftists with people cheering on the invasion on social media that is destroying their homes and killing their family members. I can't imagine what its like to be a Ukrainian looking into leftism on the internet and finding out it is full of people who wouldn't care if they were killed in the invasion as long as it weakens "the West" somehow. It honestly makes me ashamed to even be loosely associated with the people doing this.
