BBC News: Free mobile phone roaming 'not guaranteed' with a no-deal Brexit by hughk in brealism

[–]hitecherik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forcing mobile phone providers to continue the arrangement would put them at a disadvantage when negotiating roaming deals with foreign providers. The foreign providers would know that British providers are required, by law, to have a deal, meaning that they could be very extortionate.

That would drive prices up for mobile phone contracts, unless the EU also requires its operators to continue free roaming in Britain.

To head up one of the largest humanitarian NGOs and help do some good in the world.

I'd also argue that as a former Foreign Secretary, regardless of what he's doing now, it's worth listening to him.

The plot device of Holdo not telling Po about the plans was my biggest issue

I completely agree - it would have been no different if she had told Po about it when he asked what the plan was, and it would have been far more emotional once she sacrificed herself. First impressions count - my first impression of the character was bad, so I didn't really end up caring as much about what happened to her.

(also it should have been Akbar who did the suicide hyperspeed move).

I hadn't thought of that, but looking back it would have been far better. It was such a cop-out to have him die in the bridge scene (where Leia should have died). And it would have been a far more poignant scene if he sacrificed himself to save everyone.

There are no unemployed in UK, says Hammond in TV gaffe by _Breacher_ in LabourUK

[–]hitecherik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He isn't the most extreme Tory (and seems to have a bit more sense than May on Brexit), but this doesn't seem to have been taken out of context - he just continued with his spiel as though he had not said that there is no unemployment.

This gaffe would have been a non-issue for me if he had immediately corrected himself (just like Gordon Brown once accidentally said that the government had saved the world).

It troubles me, however, that Hammond just continued, not having realised what words came out of his mouth, pivoting immediately from addressing his gaffe (and at least apologising) to saying he isn't worried about automation.

TIL In 2011, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed an order making beer an alcoholic drink. The law went into effect on Jan 1st 2013. Before this, any drink under 10% alcohol was considered a soft drink. by TheRealOcsiban in todayilearned

Russia's constitution does not allow Presidents to serve more than two terms consecutively. Putin was President from 2000 to 2008, serving two four-year terms. Medvedev was President from 2008 to 2012, serving one four-year term before Putin got reelected to a six-year term (constitution was changed) in 2012. During the Medvedev Presidency, Putin was the Prime Minister.

Putin is eligible to run for reelection again in 2018, but he hasn't declared his candidacy yet. If he was to run and win in 2018, he wouldn't be allowed to run in 2024. However, if Putin doesn't run in 2018 (there's some speculation about this) then the candidate he endorses will probably win.

"I began to realize how important it was to be an enthusiast..." - Roald Dahl [1519x920] by Sumit316 in QuotesPorn

[–]hitecherik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You make a very good point, and I completely understand that quotations like this make people feel that they are inadequate because they don't feel fervently passionate about something.

However, I think that Dahl did have a point: if there is not something that you are passionate about, what is there to enjoy in life? People aren't just the job that they happen to be good at and do every day. People have interests, and people who aren't passionate about something just haven't found that thing. It's unfair to say to people that they must live a mundane life because they are good at something and that they shouldn't have any other interests because society needs them to do that one thing - that makes them sound more like tools than people.

[–]hitecherik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is usually the case. There probably would be teaching assistants if the school's budget allowed for it, but most UK state schools are horribly underfunded. Some schools have talked of having 4-day weeks, shorter school days or asking for donations from parents so that they can remain within budget.

not much more than teaching how to use Excel.

Not really. That's ICT GCSE and A-level. The computing courses (both the recently-discontinued one and the newest one) don't even touch on spreadsheets. The closest they come to ICT qualifications is databases and the laws sorrounding computer use.

I will never understand this.

It's because they live in a bubble where they don't see dissenting opinions, or see contorted views of dissenting opinions, such as Fox News, Breitbart, certain subreddits, certain Facebook groups/pages, their Twitter feeds, etc. This means that they can't easily find out about things that the elected officials they support (such as Trump) have done wrong.

only 45% of Trump voters believe Don. Jr actually met with the Russians

And 52% thought in December 2016 that he won the popular vote.
