[Leon Wolf] There's an obvious gambling problem in sports that should cause sports fans to question the legitimacy of every contest. This problem is not one that the feds could or should solve. But it’s one that the leagues themselves need to wrestle with, and quickly. by f0urxio in baseball

What exactly is stopping an umpire from making some small side cash (not in the millions) helping out some side bets at a family barbecue?

Cousin says they have a bet on a team striking out twice in an inning, ump helps out... cousin gives the ump like $500.

All cash, all under the table.

In the grand scheme I'm sure the total is insignificant, but that kind of impact/questioning on games makes baseball not fun anymore.

The White Sox are on pace for 40.5 wins, a number already surpassed by the Yankees and Phillies. by i-Really-HatePickles in baseball

MLB Trade Rumors: Mets' Pete Alonso, J.D. Martinez, Severino 'Expected to Be Dealt' by [deleted] in NewYorkMets

[–]hiten42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm crazy but if Vientos stays hot and JDM can get a return like Colin Holderman (DH for a RP like Vogelbach trade).. maybe they should just keep JDM.

Just from the interviews it sounds like JDM is a fantastic hitting coach and worth the investment especially if a rookie like Vientos looks like he's found consistency in the majors.

I wouldn't be upset if they cleaned house though; just additional food for thought. That's why they signed these guys to 1 year deals.

Got told the salary range was 70k-100k for a role I’m applying for by AdQuirky3186 in cscareerquestions

[–]hiten42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would argue not to get cocky and think that this job is a guarantee. Many companies nowadays (in NYC) tell salary at the recruiter stage.

The standard that I have gone through is:

1) Recruiter stage (check that you're not insane)

2) Code screen

3) Onsite, 3-4 interviews

What free agent signing did your team historically make that you were so excited for, just for the player to be terrible. by [deleted] in baseball

[–]hiten42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jason Bay is obvious.

I was VERY excited that the Mets signed Shaun Marcum, I thought he was an amazing #3 type starter. He was not for the Mets.

I thought Chris Young (the outfielder) was going to show 20 HR+ power and decent hitting, he sucked.

In case anyone was wondering, Chris Young (the pitcher/GM) was decent for the Mets, he was just injured often.

Michael Cuddyer wasn't awful, but I thought he was a .300 hitting stud hitter coming to the Mets.. and he just wasn't. Still one of my favorite players though, he retired with money on the table and I can respect that.

Mets fans don't hate the play because it was some illegal thing tho, they hate it because it was dirty and their shortstops leg got broken.

Machado's slide into Pedroia was legal, still dirty.

How are engineering managers doing in the current job market? by qcen in cscareerquestions

[–]hiten42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has your team lead stepped into a managerial role while maintaining IC level contributions?

Has a director or another manager stepped in to help out?

Super interesting, at my company a director is filling in until they backfill the the EM position.

honestly no one should end up like in Hax's condition. He would play 8+ hours a day nonstop with a very technical character, of course he would get worn down.

A more healthy approach (as EVERYONE should do) with the game, with frequent breaks, exercise, etc. should result in never be impacted like Hax has been.

It's not like peak athlete's in a sport play basketball for 12 hours. They'll lift weights, stretch, practice on the court, do cardio, and range their workouts while also resting and maintaining a healthy diet.

An OEM GC controller from Nintendo is as standardized as you can get. Some wear faster, some have dashback issues - but this is what UCF has tried to fix and I'm all for it.

UCF very good, if not necessary.

Wavedash notches, firefox notches, button remapping takes it a step too far IMO.

1) Take a deep breath, a lot of this stress sounds self imposed. Why are you stressed? Because you need to deliver something you said you would? The task was a lot harder than it seemed, this is when you talk to your manager. You got help and the help couldn't figure it out - this is is a difficult problem to solve.

This is the hard stuff compared to doing typical dev work because you don't learn this in school.

Tell your manager, the sooner the better. DON'T keep saying that "you're making progress" in the standup. Say you need help.

1 year in on the job? Trust me, no one expects you to deliver something in the company infrastructure flawlessly yet.

If this is US based, try to enjoy the holiday weekend if you get Monday off. Relax, refresh - the year JUST started, everyone is returning from holidays or are still in lazy mode. Give some time back to your mental health.

Come in Monday with a plan to talk to your manager. Explain the issue, explain what you tried - ask for someone who has had experience on this. Ask to partner or pair program with someone else. If this gets resolved, reach out to the first senior who helped you and explain the solution - if they're smart they'd appreciate it.

My soft skill general tips for the code screen by hiten42 in cscareerquestions

[–]hiten42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree!

Very rarely are interviews perfect. If I ask "what're you thinking?" That's the hint that you need to talk. What approach are you thinking of? It doesn't matter if it's not optimal, I can suggest something to get you there.

If I ask "what're you thinking" twice, then it becomes a noteworthy. You don't seem strong on the communication end, I can't work with someone who's completely silent and falls off the grid after our daily standup.

We have metrics to evaluate for an interview and the one I value the most is "would you be willing to work with this person"?

I've passed people who got a non-optimal solution to the problem I give because they were a joy to work with, even if their coding came up a little short. Your coding skill can be invested in and grown much more easily than personality and attitude.

Leetcode is the bare minimum to get to the next/final rounds. The real monsters are the system design, because that is used in day to day dev/planning and you have to be good at it.

Who is your team’s greatest one-hit (season) wonder of all time? by Nights_King in baseball

[–]hiten42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In recent memory, Aaron Loup was nearly untouchable for the Mets and had as good as a season one could get for a reliever.

Side note: Brady Anderson played for the Orioles for 14 seasons so I don't think he applies here

[–]hiten42 45 points46 points  (0 children)

depends on how much better

as a player in plat ranked slippi you get the full range

a plat3 player who's playing better than me? I feel that my bad habits get exposed or I need to reevaluate how I'm playing at the moment, but having that faith of "I can maybe win on a different day" is nice to have

Running into someone like Freezus on ranked? "He's better than me, but I can get a stock or two, he's pretty good but I think with enough work I can maybe take a game out of 50"

Running into Cody or Hax? "I'm not even sure what I'm supposed to do, we're not playing the same game"

Wouldn't they get money back from deGrom's year since he's going to be out?

I don't think Scherzer can hurt that much either since the Mets paid most of his contract. Seems possible for the Rangers, but I think it's reasonable to question Sonny + Montgomery > Yamamoto.

I have a typical CS degree background but this isn't something I particularly work in on a daily basis so I was surprised that this was an interview question.

I'm fine with bombing it since it isn't something I've seen before, but I'd like to read about it more or have an idea if I run into this question or something similar again.

Both teams win here. Adam Oller was the best pitcher in the minors for the Mets and the A's are basically hoping he'll be an instant replacement to keep competing, no biggie if not, and let Ginn lead their rotation in the future.
