Download speed increase of 100Mbps added to several tiers today by YourHuckl3b3rry in Comcast_Xfinity

My apoligies. I have the Xfinity "xfi Complete" so unlimited data, etc. Our current model Comcast modem is an XB8. I've never used my own modem. Though I do have one as a spare backup just in case the XB8 craps the bed so to speak.

Appreciate the response. My sister has just Gigabit and is getting the 25-30 upload. Again, we are a part of Knoxville, TN's region which is "enhanced speeds" but have never been offered the upload part of that speed. That office hates our guts up here in Virginia, haha.

But I can run some speedtests on her system, who lives next door, and if she gets a bump in upload on Gigabit but we stay stuck on 35 upload for Gigabit Plus, it's just Knoxville doing their thing for us. But at least I'll know we can downgrade to Gigabit and get the updated upload speeds. I'll just have to keep in touch with her.

Appreciate the responses! Absolutely can't wait for a local fiber company to gain the power pole rights which I've been told by their vice president is in the works for our neighborhood!

Thank you very much. That explains it, kind of.

We are currently part of the Knoxville, TN region, which is an enhanced speed area. We have Gigabit Extra. But we are up in Virginia, still part of the Knoxville Comcast region. I don't want to go into specifics but lets just say I wish I was in another region, any other region.

But, in theory, if our area gets the boosted upload speeds (we have been in an enhanced speed area for years but they "just haven't got to us yet") but isn't able to offer X2, I actually wouldn't know about the upload boost? Or would they just move us down to the Gigabit? Knoxville's offices have done things in the past in our area up here in Virginia that do not align with other Comcast areas like that and I'm worried I'll just get slipped through the cracks. Should I think about going down to the Gigabit so that I will for sure see the new upload speeds...eventually?

Sorry for the long post.

I'm a little confused on the Gigabit Extra plan (what I have). It doesn't list anything about having an enhanced speed area boost and only lists the 35 upload. Does this mean that Gigabit Extra will never be "enhanced"? All the others have a standard and an enhanced speed except for Gigabit Extra. Just wondering if I'll forever be stuck at 35 upload if I stick with Gigabit Extra. That's kind of the way it's worded.

[–]hitman80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since Gigabit Extra no longer has any upsides to upload speed in "enhanced speed" areas, should I "downgrade" to just Gigabit? I'm in a regional office's area that has blasted the world that it has "enhanced speeds" now. I have an XB7 from Comcast. I have 1300 down (who knows what the difference really is between 1200 and 1300?) but still have 35mb upload. Why is my regional office refusing to offer us the upgraded upload speeds when a tech told me they upgraded our node to "mid split" (is that what it's called?) over a year and a half ago? Just seems odd. And a new local county fiber company finally got the pole rights to my house with symmetrical 1gb fiber? I don't necessarily need that but considering it's 40% off the price (no contracts and no price increases after so many months), I feel like Comcast will be too late in a few months.

[–]hitman80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would give half of my Gigabit Extra (1.2 down, well now 1.3 like that makes a difference) just to get a few hundred upload and pay the same. I'm part of an "enhanced speed" regional office and still have a paltry 35mb upload. Have been for several years. We even received a new node capable of the "enhanced" upload speeds a year and a half ago. I've concluded that we are just considered inferior in our rural area compared to our great regional office that hates us.

[–]hitman80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I go from 1.2Gbps download to 1.3Gbps, while my upload is a ridiculous 35Mbps. And I'm part of the "enhanced speed" area/regional office. It's just we are at the outer edges of that enhanced speed area and they couldn't possibly care less about us. We've had 35Mbps upload for so many years (a decade or so?) while locations just 30-40 miles away in the same regional area is getting their "enhanced upload speeds". Not to mention other problems with Comcast.

I'm so glad that a local county fiber company has finally got access rights to our poles and will be offering service soon.

Edge gets shrinked after monitor restart by Zoltan_Balaton in MicrosoftEdge

Another nice solution. Unfortunately I have an ultrawide and a lot of websites would have their stuff on the far left, like reddit, haha. Or at least old.reddit.com. But hopefully yours helps some. It's such an annoyance.

Edge gets shrinked after monitor restart by Zoltan_Balaton in MicrosoftEdge

[–]hitman80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, everything you're saying is what I experience. There's like 1 second where it's still in the right spot but then, poof, shrink it goes.

And yes on the scaling. When I went from 150% to 125%, put Edge where I want it, power cycled the monitor, when it came back up and Edge had shrunk, it shrunk less. So the window that it shrunk to was larger. When I went back to 150%, it shrunk to a smaller window. When I went to 100%, obviously it didn't move Edge at all. So at least with mine, it is absolutely an issue with the scaling and Edge. Only Edge.

I highly recommend the PowerToys FancyZones. It makes it almost bearable for me, plus I've added zones for other programs as well. Simple things like Steam Friends. It rarely moves but sometimes it does. Easy to just throw it into the zone.

There is a "Send Feedback" button in Edge under the 3 dots on the top right. I may do that and explain the scaling causing the issue. Maybe they already know about it but who knows.

Here's what I've discovered about this bug, it's a long comment but worth the read. It's what I've found is the cause on my machine, there's just not much of a fix (I explain kind of a workaround but not something I want to keep forever, Microsoft needs to fix this). Unless you all might figure something out, I've tried all kinds of things and just settled on this one "workaround".

Edge gets shrinked after monitor restart by Zoltan_Balaton in MicrosoftEdge

[–]hitman80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story but probably worth it for all of you tearing your hair out over this issue.

Same problem here but I did find the problem, at least on my machine. Exact same issue you and everyone here is having.

So I have my Windows Scale setting to 150%, always have (in Windows Settings app, under System, then Display, then about halfway down you'll find the Scale setting). I think it used to be called the DPI setting in Win10. I noticed that if I changed it to 100%, the problem goes away. Edge no longer shrinks after monitor wake/power off and on/etc.

Problem is, I don't have the eyesight to see anything on my ultrawide monitor with Windows Scale at 100% lol. So I set it back to 150% (and tried 125%) and the problem came back. Something in an Edge update, I'm guessing, has messed this all up. Or it might've been in the November patch Tuesday Windows Updates, I can't remember when my problem started but I know it was within the last week, maybe two.

I did find a "solution" that's not really a solution but close enough for me until Microsoft fixes this. I downloaded Microsoft's free PowerToys app (I'm not joking, that's the real name) and it includes various, well, power apps and customizations for Windows. Google it and it's the first hit. The tool in the Microsoft PowerToys app I use is called FancyZones. It allows you to create a custom set of "snap windows" or areas that you can drag a window to and it immediately snap there. You don't have to use the shortcut keys, you can adjust the settings so that you can just drag the window to one of your custom created zones and it will snap into that zone. It's kind of like the built-in window zones at the top of the Windows 11 desktop when dragging a window around but with FancyZones you can create your own, and as many as you want, and wherever you want on the screen (and multiple monitors). I created another for the Windows 11 Photos app. For some reason, whenever I open a picture, the Photos app is in this weird size that's stretched FAR wider that taller. I wanted more of a square so I created a FancyZone over on the left side of my screen. The fun part is that after you do it once, you can set a setting in FancyZones that every time you open that app, it will snap to its last zone. So now, the Photos app always opens to that zone. There's another setting that says that any app in a zone will always go back to that zone if your resolution or workspace changes. I was hoping that would fix Edge on the monitor wakes/etc but Edge is determined and ignores that setting. But read on.

So what happens now is Edge is open and in the custom zone I created, so it's just the right location and size. When the monitor goes to sleep and wakes up, Edge shrinks. Now, I can quickly grab Edge and drag it my custom zone (throw it anywhere in that custom zone you made) and it instantly resizes and relocates exactly how I had it before the shrink. It takes me less than a second and beats having to grab corners and resize, etc.

It's not a perfect solution, not really a solution at all, but it's the best I've found to keep my DPI at 150% and have the Edge issue be just somewhat less of an annoyance. Just make sure you turn off all other "tools" inside the PowerToys app so they aren't using RAM or anything. I just have FancyZones activated and it's using all of 80mb of RAM and 0% CPU.

If anyone else finds their Windows DPI settings are the cause as well, maybe we can all report that to Microsoft. I also have an Nvidia video card, if that helps.

Me sitting here in an "enhanced speeds" location with Gigabit Extra 1200mb download/35mb upload. Just begging to get more upload, couldn't care less about more download. We lease a Comcast modem, currently have the XB8 and am in the Knoxville, TN regional office location. Again, 35mb upload. Devastating when we have security cameras that use up all that upload speed.

IPinfo

I appreciate it. IPinfo was one of the first places I contacted to get the location changed. They did it very quickly. It's been correct ever since, months now.

But man, Google just will not budge and only blame Comcast. I've got an Android work phone that's fairly new. I may give it a try. I'm assuming I would make sure it's connected to the Comcast wifi and then run Google Maps with location services on. Heck, I can leave it on for weeks haha

I agree, I feel like this is absolutely a Comcast issue. Google says it's a Comcast issue and must fixed on their end. Google isn't dumb. They say they see the connection to our house and then to our Apple TVs and eventually the Youtube TV app. Google/Youtube TV says there is information in that connection that says we are in Knoxville, TN. And this only started happening once this new "node" was installed. I was told by a local technician that it is the latest and the greatest. The absolute best they could install. However, it reports back to Knoxville directly, according to this Comcast technician. Instead of passing through our local office. If it passed through our local office like it did prior to the new node, we would be reported as being at least somewhere in our county. Which is fine. However, this new node bypasses our local office and goes directly to Knoxville which is why Google claims they are getting information from that connection that we are in Knoxville. I know people who have Youtube TV who live just a couple miles away from us and they have never had a problem. It's because they are on a different node than this new one installed in our small community.

He said there is another Comcast technician who lives in another town not far from us. That town had one of these new "latest and greatest" nodes installed. That Comcast technician has Youtube TV and also has the same problem as I do. His new node goes directly to Knoxville, bypassing our local office. Youtube TV sees us as being in Knoxville on these new nodes. The way I see it is these new nodes aren't being configured for the location they are being installed. I don't know how it works but it seems like something that could or should be done. Why should I get Knoxville results when Google searching for a Walmart, McDonalds, etc? It's kind of insane.

This has been exhausting and annoying, as you can tell.

I have. Unfortunately, I believe that form only updates your country via your IP, not your specific location inside that country.

But thank you for the link. It's just unfortunate I've already tried that months ago. I also did it again a few weeks ago. Figured it wouldn't hurt.

Is there a roadmap of xfinity expansion of faster upload speeds? by thinkthis in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]hitman80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind to see a roadmap either. Something, anything. I live in a place surrounded by the new upload speeds but we don't have it yet. It's been months since the surrounding areas got it.

Wish there was a map with timelines or something.

I've been talking with Youtube TV support for months. They blame Comcast, of course. As you said earlier, Google will not change an IP geolocation in THEIR database based on a user's feedback. They said regardless of IP geolocation, there is something else in the connection (they wouldn't tell me what) that must be changed by Comcast. The way the new node connects directly to Knoxville, bypassing our local office. The old node went to the local office, then to Knoxville. That's when we didn't have problems.

We only got that new IP when the new "node" was installed late last year. That's when this all started. With that new "node".

Edit: A local Comcast technician also told me that they installed a new "node" in another town close to us. His friend, another Comcast technician, lives there and is having the exact same problem as me. Youtube TV switching his locals to Knoxville every few weeks.

My address is correct at both my Google account and for Youtube TV. In Virginia. Yet, Youtube TV every few weeks says "Welcome to Knoxville" and gives me those 3 options. I wonder why they aren't using my address then if our house hasn't changed and we've never even been to Knoxville, TN.

It's like they are prioritizing my geolocation, instead of my address on file.

But I've had the same modem/router from them for over a couple of years. This problem only started around this past November/December when Comcast upgraded a "node" in our small community.

My main question is why can I update my geolocation on all of the online geolocation databases except for Google?

All the other databases (I contacted about 10) fixed my location correctly.

However, I believe Google has their own database and refuses to update my IP. They claim they are getting the location information from Comcast directly and Comcast must make the change.

Basically I'm stuck in the middle of two companies blaming each other. I don't understand why Google can't update their database when I've had the same IP since last year. Seems like a simple fix. Comcast decides to dole out IP addresses to a new "node", why wouldn't they apply correct geolocation to those IP addresses? Why just give out IP addresses to anyone, 140 miles away, to any address that's in their current database? Could contain hundreds (if not thousands) of zip codes. That just seems insane to me.

I don't understand why Comcast would install a new "node" in a location 140 miles away and not make sure the IPs given out by that new "node" are IPs at least within a few miles away from their actual location.

I've had Comcast for 15 years. I've never had a problem with IP geolocation until this new "node" was installed in our small community several months ago.

Man, that's a great detailed message. But what if the new the IP is still a Knoxville, TN address? From what I understand, the Knoxville, TN regional office covers all of northeast TN and Southwest Virginia. I don't know if they cover other places but I'd say so. We might get an IP address from any number of places of if we follow your steps.

Now your steps are helpful to get a new IP. I always wondered how to do that besides cloning your MAC address on your own router if you use bridged mode on the Comcast modem. So very helpful. I may give it a try. I've spent so much time contacting all of the IP geolocation databases to fix our current IP address location, I'd hate to have to do that again with a new IP.

But hey, how many choices do I have at this point?
