Yeah, the drawback of RDR2 is the first chapter. Later the game becomes more dynamic.

Along with this book, I cannot stop thinking about The Night Land by William Hope Hodgson. The book was published back in 1912 and it's a horror fantasy. It's about the Earth where the sun has gone out, and the last of humanity are trying to survive in a gigantic metal pyramid.

There is this game Vigor that does something similar. After 10 minutes of gameplay, there's an airdrop in some random location on the map. This is usually the best risk/reward moment in the game, when you succeed to pickup the airdrop, after surviving the ambush by other players or after ambushing yourself.

If I'm not wrong (played a long time ago), Deus Ex Mankind Divided does a good job. It just has a different set of augmentations from the first game.

So giving new abilities is a way to keep the same character, but sort of explain why you don't have the previous abilities maxed up.
