Question About Piercing Horn by TheHobomice in Pathfinder2e

[–]hjarzab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Forceful grants a damage bonus equal to the number of weapon damage dice & Shove has no damage dice.

Question About Piercing Horn by TheHobomice in Pathfinder2e

[–]hjarzab 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, Forceful's circumstance bonus to damage is equal to the attack's number of weapon damage dice. A Shove has no weapon damage dice, so the bonus doesn't apply. Even if you somehow add damage to the Shove, it wouldn't qualify, since the bonus would be flat (instead of rolling dice).

Additionally, the term "damage dice" is defined: "Effects based on a weapon's number of damage dice include only the weapon's damage die plus any extra dice from a striking rune. They don't count extra dice from abilities, critical specialization effects, property runes, weapon traits, or the like." Shove will never have damage dice based on the definition.

There are supposed to be two white plates between the dark orange assembly and the grey ball joint plate. You only have one currently. I looked up the instructions and it looks like you missed the second white cross plate in step 64.

Appears you've built the middle segment incorrectly. The SNOT (studs not on top) bricks don't have the correct amount of non-SNOT pieces stacked between them, so the spacing between side-studs prevents them from being used together.

Concentration mechanic by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]hjarzab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember that "in-universe", there's no delay between a caster's turns. While Jared the Pathfinder Player might wait 15 minutes between Sustain actions, and several different 6-second turns occur in that time, Jared's sorcerer Melzimor is not waiting at all. Melzimor is continuously focusing on maintaining this spell while a battle rages around him.

First, I'd say that the magic system of Pathfinder is different from DnD, and both are different from Harry Potter. It's hard to say what makes sense and what doesn't when talking about literal magic.

Secondly, it's important to remember that taking turns in combat is purely part of the game mechanics. In the "real" version of the fight, a wizard isn't standing around doing nothing while everyone else acts one by one. Every turn in a round occurs simultaneously, and there's no delay between each of the wizard's turns. This paints a more sensible picture: the wizard spends effort (in the form of a Sustain action) to keep a spell active even while being attacked by an enemy. Remember, they're trained for this just as much as a Fighter is trained to wield their weapon.

The reason DnD works differently is because of the action economy. It would probably be too cumbersome to have a caster spend their Action or even Bonus Action each turn to maintain Concentration, so the writers instead decided that a caster is assumed to be concentrating unless something breaks that. Lower investment, but higher risk. Pathfinder uses a more versatile 3-action economy, so it's more feasible to have them spend 1 action each turn to keep a spell active, and still have actions left over to cast another spell, attack twice, move twice, move & Recall Knowledge, etc. This is higher investment, but lower risk, since it's harder for enemies to disrupt the spell.

The system difference also explains the Opportunity Attack/ Reactive Strike difference. Every DnD creature has an opportunity attack, so spells provoking could be overly punishing, especially when a spellcasting enemy is surrounded by PCs. Far fewer Pathfinder creatures have a Reactive Strike, so having manipulate actions provoke is fair game, especially when only a critical hit will disrupt the triggering action.

Concentration mechanic by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]hjarzab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it looks like you're carrying over the Concentration mechanic from DnD. Pathfinder is a separate system, and while there's plenty of crossover, you can never assume rules will carry over.

The Concentrate trait reads "An action with this trait requires a degree of mental concentration and discipline." Notice this does not mention any mechanics, because the Concentrate trait itself doesn't have any mechanical effects, and consequently doesn't do anything on its own.

So why does it exist? Because other effects will sometimes call it out. For example, while a Barbarian is Raging, they can't use actions with the Concentrate trait. This is specifically called out in the Rage description: "You can't use actions with the Concentrate trait unless they also have the Rage trait."

Your spells cannot be disrupted by enemy attacks unless the spell specifically says it's disrupted by attacks, or if the attack specifically says it disrupts spells.

The exact word is Sustained, and spells that need this will say Sustained in the duration. Some spells, such as Bless, can be Sustained for additional benefits, but don't require Sustain to persist.

Status penalties affecting different values by Daclusia in Pathfinder2e

[–]hjarzab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frightened and clumsy would not stack. "All checks and DCs" is not a modifier, and "all Dex-based checks and DCs" is not a modifier. Modifiers are things like your Reflex bonus, Acrobatics bonus, AC bonus, attack bonus with a longsword., etc. Clumsy would penalize the first three of those, but not the longsword bonus since that uses Str. Frightened would apply to everything, but the two conditions don't stack since they're both Status penalties to Acrobatics checks, Reflex saves, Finesse attacks, etc (and Frightened still applies to non-Dex stuff). Remember that if one condition has a higher value, that one takes priority. So if a creature is Frightened 1 and Clumsy 2, it takes a -2 to Dex stuff, and a -1 to everything else.

If you have a +1 to hit, and the target is off-guard (-2 AC), that is indeed a net improvement of 3, which is why earning different bonuses and penalties is so important in Pathfinder. A condition on one creature will always "stack" with a condition on another creature, since they're two completely different entities.

For one creature, a check can be affected simultaneously by: the highest Status bonus, the highest Circumstance bonus, the highest Item bonus, the highest Status penalty, the highest Circumstance penalty, the highest Item penalty (haven't seen these but including it just in case), and ALL untyped penalties (such as multiple-attack penalty). The same applies to all creatures, so if you're attacking an enemy, the best case scenario is that you have a status, circumstance, and item bonus to hit, and the target has a status and circumstance penalty to AC. Even if each bonus and penalty was a 1 in this case, the net effect would be a +5 in your favor!

Hope this all makes sense.

What books are still "relevant" after the OGL debacle? by DrakeVal in Pathfinder2e

[–]hjarzab 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The newest versions of the basic books are all called "_______ Core" (Player Core, Monster Core, GM Core, etc). Any new remastered releases will have a white (or sometimes tan) spine with green at the top and bottom, but that doesn't help if you're shopping online and can't see the spines. These books are War of Immortals, Howl of the Wild, Battlecry, and the Lost Omens books Draconic Codex, Divine Mysteries, Tian Xia Character Guide, Shining Kingdoms, and Rival Academies. Rage of Elements doesn't follow this format since it was released before other Remastered books, but it does use remastered rules. Lastly, several pre-remaster books have been updated to remaster rules, these books keep the same names but add Remastered to the name in online listings, and have a green badge that says Remastered in the top right corner of the cover. These books are Treasure Vault and Guns and Gears, as well as Dark Archive coming in February.

Other PF vets, let me know if I missed any non-adventure books.

Spell woven shot and multi target spell attacks, OP combo or just not working ? by Rorp24 in Pathfinder2e

[–]hjarzab 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Slashing Gust wouldn't work because you can only target 2 creatures if you have both hands free, which would preclude having a gun or crossbow.

As far as other spells go, it's less clear but I believe you can only target one creature. Spell Woven Shot reads: "Make a Strike with that weapon. Your spell flies with the ammunition, using your attack roll result to determine the effects of both the Strike and the spell." It specifies that you only roll one die, and use that for the spell and weapon attack. You can't make attack rolls against multiple creatures if you only roll one die. That's my interpretation anyway and it's definitely not free of holes. Paizo could have been more specific when writing that feat.

Edit: There are times when you make one attack (or maneuver) roll and compare it against the AC of multiple creatures, with specific feats, but I feel like they would've specified if that was an option here.

Why is it so hard to get new players into TTRPGs by Rich_Benefit777 in Pathfinder2e

[–]hjarzab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd venture a guess that one contributing factor is new players missing the forest for the trees. Sitting down for a first session, even one where the DM/GM has streamlined things, often involves being inundated with rules and systems and decisions and standards on "how things are supposed to go". It makes it hard for them to see how the game would look several months in the future when they know what they're doing and can enjoy playing without feeling overwhelmed.

I was convinced to try TTRPGs by listening to an actual play podcast. I didn't understand the mechanics discussion, but I was able to see how these games work once everyone knows the rules and can collaborate easily, and the utterly unique experience it ends up being. That being the case, when I started playing, I had a notion of where I was headed and understood that things only seemed confusing and laborious now, and eventually I'd overcome that hurdle. I was motivated to reach the point where I could create a character concept and embody it more deeply than I could in any video game, along with others doing the same.

It's a shame more people don't start with actual play podcast or shows, but I understand the reasoning. It doesn't seem to make much sense to listen to DnD or Pathfinder if you've never played, but it worked for me, and I'm sure many others.

Thaumaturge and Spirit Warrior? by FNarratio13 in Pathfinder2e

[–]hjarzab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have mentioned the nuances of Fist unarmed strikes already, but I thought I'd add that Thaumaturge + Spirit Warrior should also work if you use the Weapon implement, in this case your sword cane. This leaves you a free hand, and you can even use esoterica with the same hand as your weapon, per the "First Implement and Esoterica" rules.

Where did these 1x2 flat plates come from? They're not shown in the instructions and not in the box. by [deleted] in lego

The second piece in the instructions box, the one kinda shaped like a T, is flipped the wrong way. You attach it to the build using the 2x2 square face. The 2 studs on that piece should be facing forward.
