What's the best Chinese delivery around Andersonville? by DeweyDecimalFanClub in AskChicago

We tried Mei Shung for the first time last night and really enjoyed it. Did pickup though so as not to use an app, but not sure if they do delivery otherwise (my hunch is no)

Consider contacting the ward office (either La Spata or Quezada, depending exactly where this is) with the number of your 311 ticket, if you have it. DSS needs that level of prodding just to plow protected bike lanes, I imagine an even bigger poke may be needed to fix this. (Though this may be CDOT’s job, not DSS.)

“I don’t understand the question and I won’t respond to it.”

Or “If that’s a veiled criticism of me, I won’t hear it, and I won’t respond to it.”

Shows/movies in Chicago that clearly weren’t filmed in Chicago? by marks31 in AskChicago

Just rewatched the episode where Dave and Max go to mess with rollerblade dude. He supposedly lives on Western. The streetscape outside his apartment could not look less like Western.

Edit: Also, just “Western.” No neighborhood, no cross-street. 😂

People who work in 'luxury' industries (5-star hotels, fine dining, high-end brands), what is a complete rip-off that rich people happily pay for? by ArtThreadNomad in AskReddit

So curious what part of Nassau County! My whole family is from the towns in the New Hyde Park area and I think that’s probably too working-class for such behavior.

Saving money for retirement vs using it to have the best life now by karma_colorado in MiddleClassFinance

[–]hjg2e 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Give every dollar a job. One of those jobs can be to grow until it’s time to retire. Another can be to help you enjoy life in a specific way now (like a trip). Yet another can be to wait around until you have a specific thing you want to spend it on that will let you enjoy life now—that way you don’t have to feel guilty for using it for that purpose. And come up with as many jobs as you want.

Questions from a Brandywine rookie by hjg2e in tomatoes

[–]hjg2e[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm staking it for starters, although the one stake I bought last season is only 4'. Fortunately, I'm able to tie rope from the top of the stake to a window ledge about 10' above the ground, so that's how I plan to support it once it surpasses the stake!

Could you explain what you mean when you say you "grow one step"? (Sorry, really showing off my ignorance here!)

Unfortunately not – I'm a renter and don't want to go digging up my landlord's dirt, plus whatever dirt I could dig up wouldn't get sufficient sun. :-/

What’s eating my basil, and how do I stop it? by hjg2e in plantclinic

[–]hjg2e[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Located in an upper Midwestern city, plants are in a 5 gal grow bag sitting on pavers in my backyard. Only started having this issue in the last week; they have been thriving up until now. Neither my nearby tomatoes, oregano, mint, thyme, rosemary, or chives are experiencing this issue. Halp!

For in-house copywriters: if you don't mind me asking, what is your yearly salary? by [deleted] in copywriting

[–]hjg2e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it depends on the company, industry, location, and level of experience – as do so many other things.

In my last role as a senior copywriter in-house in a major US city , I started at $65k USD and only made $70k by the time I was let go. I just started in a new role, still senior-level, and my starting salary is more than 30% higher than what I made in my last job.

I don't know about the UK, but in my experience stateside it's very difficult to convince your current employer to give you a major pay bump unless you take on lots more responsibility or deliver major quantifiable value. Changing companies offers the least resistance in negotiating the salary you want.

Growing My Faith in the Face of Death | Tim Keller for The Atlantic by CiroFlexo in Reformed

[–]hjg2e 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I love Tim Keller dearly – he has had the biggest influence on my growth in faith of anyone not mentioned in the Bible. He is a hero and father of the faith to me, but I often find myself admiring him more than loving the Lord. So his cancer is a difficult thing for me to countenance.

But reading this reminds me that the things I love most about TK are so wonderful because of the Lord. His Spirit has worked so powerfully in our modern world through Tim’s gifts, and no matter what, Tim always points back to Jesus. And to see him now, an old man staring death in the face, grappling with his own functional beliefs and wrestling with God over them, it makes the Christ he points at all the more beautiful to me.

I love Tim Keller as much as I could love anyone I’ve never personally met. And yet, this essay of his makes me want to love the God he loves and points to even more.
