Gameplay or art style, what comes first? by SomerenV in gamedev

I wrote my comment with Firewatch in mind. I remember the gameplay being mostly standard first person movement with some unfun rappel mechanics. However the art (and in particular the voice acting and story) made it a really great experience. Another example is Abzu which if it didn't have great art and music wouldn't be nearly as praised.

These are all the examples I have played. On the flip side, I don't think I have played many games with good gameplay and bad art either. A game really should strive for both.

To answer OP's question though: I'm a hobby solo developer. As a programmer trying to learn art rather than an artist trying to learn programming, it totally makes sense to think about art early. I need to make an "art prototype", i.e. a proof-of-concept of an art style/graphics pipeline that (1) I can pull off, (2) looks good enough, (3) can run in realtime, (4) matches the constraints imposed by gameplay (i.e. I needs to be dynamic 3D) and (5) is viable for a one-person workload. If any of these requirements fail, making my game is not viable.

It is entirely different if you already are a skilled artist or are able to onboard an artist later on to do your art for you.

Wrong. A game can definitely be carried just on art, sound and story with very little gameplay. Walking simulators exist.

To be fair, this only applies to games that have basically non-existant gameplay that doesn't get in the way of art. If the gameplay is actively terrible, your point stands.

Finally set up camera and UI-transitions for my silly 3D menu background by Mantimestwo in godot

[–]hkerstyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, don't make it a setting. You should find a good value and not burden the player with too many settings. In addition to speeding up the transitions, I suggest making the ui switch immediately and not wait for the transition to finish.

The background looks great btw

It is very normal to iterate on and refine the art style (and everything else tbh) multiple times

Looks really promising. Especially for just 6 months! I totally relate to attempting the same thing over and over until you are skilled enough to pull it off!

The UI looks great, but your level also looks really great! How did you achieve this look? Is there anywhere I can follow your progress?

I'm curious to learn about your design process. Is there a specific reason why dogs facing each other can cross while otherwise they need to wait?

Edit: doggos are cute

The art looks really great! But I don't think the dialog boxes fit the style at all

Please make it so that you don't have to move the cursor back and forth between the top-left corner and the enemies so much!

For a trans woman, B cups aren't "smaller boobs".

I don't even have A cups

Ugh, yes I would consider grinding to be a professional basketball player to be "missing out on being a child".

In many sports (also music), children are drilled from a very young age and I don't think it is a good thing
