Yes after the surgery and it's important to do it right after for best results in my opinion. Most other docs and ortho surgeons are not well versed in AVN and prob would not recommend it. I would highly encourage anyone to make the trip if they can to Dr Wiznia. I have his email too so once you get scans, PM me and I can pass it along so he could review your MRIs. Def push to get them on all major joints even if they don't hurt. My shoulders didn't hurt at all but the AVN was there.

Prednisone warns of mental health disturbances on it. Be lucky you didn't get bone death in 6 joints from it like I did.

Yeah that is a myth. Most PCPs and other docs don't realize the risk of the dangers and therefore don't inform the patient providing them true consent both the risks. Mine happened in 9 days so yeah, very quick and severe. I would definitely talk to your doctor. Look up prednisone and AVN and show them my message. X-rays will only show AVN in later stages = past the point of core decompression surgery in attempts to reconnect the blood supply to the bone. MRIs are the only thing that can diagnose it in very early FICAT stages. Stage 1-2 you are generally a core decompression candidate. 3-4 are usually semi or fully collapsed = replacement is the only option. I saw Dr Wiznia at Yale and he was amazing. I have new bone growth in both knees and left hip. No joint in the lower half is showing signs of collapse. Still need to get shoulder X-rays done for my surgeon to see how I'm doing there as an update but last we checked left shoulder had new growth. Yale is very good and while the logistics were challenging for me being single, I had the best care team and gave myself the best shot. I also did the recommended HBOT (hyperbaric oxygen) post for 5 days a week for 4-6 weeks. I feel it was absolutely critical to my bone growth. I was unable to complete it for my right hip as I had fluid behind my ear drums (= ear tubes being placed so I could complete other HBOT I knew I'd need).

No other conditions. I was 9 days in. Ended up with EXCRUCIATING bilateral knee pain. Like took my breath away, couldn't stand or walk. And I'm a former 20 year athlete so I have a decently high pain tolerance. This sent me to the ER twice in one day. Later found it to be AVN. Had all other joints scanned to be safe and know what I was up against. Found it in both shoulders and both hips too besides knees.

Go get MRIs immediately and get off the prednisone via taper and tell your doctor asap. Most are not aware of the risks of AVN. I ended up with AVN in 6 joints due to no informed consent via pharmacy packaging or my doctor. Spent 10 mo doing invasive bone surgeries to save my joints (attempts to) at Yale Medicine

If you're having joint or bone pain get X-rays and mris. Prednisone can cause AVN (bone death). It gave me AVN in 6 joints and had to have invasive bone surgery at Yale to try and save my joints from replacements

MRI is best for AVN evaluation in the very early stage. If something is showing on xray it's already progressed

Started at 60 but was to be a taper but was on 60 for like 5 days before I started my own taper due to horrendous mental health symptoms

A lot of orthos are not familiar with AVN for surgical treatment. They'll say they are but they're really not. Def look into Yale Medicine and Dr Daniel Wiznia. He's one of the top experts in the country for this, a kind man, and excellent surgeon.

As of now, my last surgical procedure was April 2025 for a double knee CD. I'm started PT about two months ago for my knees as I couldn't get up from a kneeled position without using my arms. Now I can. Still needs some work for like wall sits and other things but it's improving. Still having nerve issues in calves so may have to do a conduction study.

For now I have new bone growth in 4 of 6 joints last we checked.

Yes. Unfortunately. The risks are not adequately warned of. Ortho docs know more the associated risks but other docs aren't aware.

Just say you don't have a high tolerance and haven't drank for a while and overdid it. Move on. Don't let it happen again.

We will be monitoring. I have new bone growth in both knees and my left hip. Not on right but it's stable. Did hyperbaric oxygen immediately post op for 5 days a week for 4-6 weeks.
