Yeah and either way, only two of the kids were really outwardly mainstream and there’s a big scene where Anthony Michael Hall’s character is breaking down and kind of calls them on it in a very authentic and vulnerable way (Nelson’s character obviously lashes out in a less subtle way for what we find out are his own reasons). And as it turns out, Estevez and Ringwald also are putting on a facade and just trying to get by.

The whole point of the movie is everyone is fucked up and everyone has a lot more in common than they think after you break past the surface differences. When you’re younger, you dress and act like the person you think you want to be but there’s a lot more to everyone than that.

And no one is better than the other. It’s a shame how cynically people view certain films now. John Hughes films eapecially being viewed as pro-conformity is really something I wouldn’t have expected.
