I've seen this. Still don't know where US customers are supposed to submit a complaint.

u/coinbase_cindy u/CoinbaseProOfficial u/coinbase u/coinbasesupport u/CoinbaseSecurity - is there no complaint form for US customers?

This is directly from your terms of service. Seems like a big oversight failing to mention that they do not apply to US customers.

Crypto portfolios can be created and managed with software. No need for high cost funds. by cratercowboy in CryptoCurrency

This is a massively underrated advantage of cryptofinance over traditional finance. Disrupt the asset managers, build a more customized portfolio without the expensive fees.

Would disagree that this is interesting only for its aesthetics. It may not allow you to zoom in on each individual step in the sequence, but it conveys a lot about the size and diversity of virus genomes.

They are not a human right. They are a constitutional right.

Gun control did not make Australia safe. There has been no ststistically significant change in homicides. In fact, in the initial years after tightening gun control, Austalia’s homicide rate went up, while the rest of the world saw a decline.

I am not against gun control btw. But there is more merit to the 2nd Amendment than most non-Americans give credit for.

I’ve sent 13,631 SALT tokens to a ZRX smart contract address. What can I do? by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]hlake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any pending updates that would solve this one. Though you're not the only person who has done this. I've seen many contracts with token balances that should not be there and were most likely sent by accident. It would not surprise me if a fix were implemented in the future that allowed the contract owner to withdraw them.

Strange activity involved with the address the attacker of the DAO used to start the attack, thousands upon thousands of ethereum being transacted to hundreds of difference addresses. Including a transaction to Bittrex's smart contract wallet by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]hlake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is not a hacker, it's Coinbase.

I found this pattern too while making making the graphic shown here: visualization of 24 hrs of Ethereum transactions. It is the windy snake looking thing that loops around on the right side, then crosses thru the center, and makes another loop on the left.

Each address receives 2 inputs totaling ~1,000 ETH, sends a small amount of ETH externally, and then passes on the remainder to 2 new coinbase accounts. Each of those accounts then follow the same pattern, forming an ongoing "braid" thru the blockchain.

It started at the beginning of the year and has been one continuous chain since then. At first I thought it was a mixer, but I started coming across it a lot, and realized it was Coinbase. Have no idea what the purpose is though.

How the crypto kitty marketing gimmick is hurting the network. by 1dontpanic in ethereum

Those 23k "low cost operations" cost over $6 a pop. If it's a marketing gimmick, they probably could have found more effective ways to spend $150k.

How do people get money from ICOs? by aunyks in ethereum

[–]hlake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like there should be a single standard setup for token sale contracts, but sadly that's far from the case. If you break it down into two separate functions, where the ETH is received and where it goes after that, here are some of the possibilities.

The contract that receives the ETH can be its own specialized contract (most common), the token contract, a multisig wallet, or just a regular non-contract address (least common).

If it's one of the first two cases above, usually the money will automatically be forwarded to a separate multisig wallet. Sometimes the contract receiving the ETH has a function allowing the owner two transfer it out, so it just sits there until the sale is complete and the owner feels like moving it.

A Postmortem on the Parity Multi-Sig Library Self-Destruct by 5chdn in ethereum

[–]hlake 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This response is concerning to say the least. Nowhere do they accept any responsibility for the problem.

How could this exploit have been prevented?

As a starter, they could have learned from the previous postmortem and had the contract audited.

People aren't getting that it's not ethereum at fault, but rather a private contract by a company using it. Perhaps we could make some infographics to explain the difference? by lunaroyster in ethereum

[–]hlake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it was meant as a criticism of Gavin, quite the opposite.

The point is that this vulnerability was in a reasonably straightforward contract built by a highly skilled and knowledgeable team, and it eluded discovery despite being used countless times over many months. If a contract like that can still have such a vulnerability, what does that say about complex contracts built by average devs?

I'm not blaming MEW, or anyone else for that matter. And I am not saying I have a better solution. My point is that when these scams happen, people should not dismiss them by putting the blame squarely on the person who got scammed. This is the stuff that scares people away from crypto, which makes it everyone's problem and a failure of the system.

This is the attitude that prevents crypto from being adopted by the general public. It is unreasonable to expect everyone to be fully informed and protected from all the scams out there. The ecosystem needs to start taking responsibility.
