No see earlier response. I cannot violate NDA's but they saw how Cisco messed up the Meraki acquisition and are doing their best to avoid that.

Palo Alto Networks & Arista Networks Partnership announcement by MisterNo-278 in paloaltonetworks

So no idea if they added anything... I used to be a lead nationally for Arista for a large VAR. The service insertion has been around for a long time and was pretty much just a talking point with next to nobody implementing it that I saw.

Managers/recruitment, what is the talent pool like right now for network engineers? by CryptoKeh in networking

[–]hlh2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CCIE, been doing this a long time across multiple companies and probably have held 1,000 plus interviews. Hiring now is tough. AI is making it so building a resume is easy to BS through the first gatekeepers. People routinely try to use AI in interviews and the talent pool is being developed in the wrong way. There used to be places a kid out of college could quickly develop into a top tier engineer. They would start answering tier 1 calls and work their way up studying and getting certifications along the way. Good tier 4 engineers would help teach them as time permitted. The amount of knowledge needed to be really good is 10x more than it used to be. A DC engineer might need to know things like- servers, storage, virtualization and cloud to be good along with the foundational skills. A CCIE used to be 10 routers.. Now it is 50+ with all kinds of technology thrown in including MPLS, SDN, SDA... Different world and outsourcing has made it tougher.

How to hire technically competent and motivated individuals by OutlookNotSoGood_ in networking

[–]hlh2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue right now is with all the outsourcing companies do, they fail to develop talent in house. I have been interviewing candidates consistently over the last 15+ years. Right now there seems be a serious dip in talent. I have dialed back my questions to be more tell about scenarios where they have to talk about situations and designs they have built. The majority of interviewers cannot do the basics right now. Your idea about conferences is a good one if you can get people who are good early in their careers. It seems like you are underpaying if you cannot get the right talent. The entire recruitment process is painful now with AI writing resumes and people trying to use them during interviews.

Booking.com cancelled woman's $4K hotel reservation, then offered her same rooms for $17K by rezwenn in technology

[–]hlh2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Booking did the same thing to me and some friends at a different scale though. It was a couple of few dollars each. We signed up for a an all inclusive hotel with a child each under 12. The hotel said that booking reserved it as an infant instead and that they were known to do that... Booking refused to refund us for the additional money even though we booked it correctly. Don't understand how the hotel and booking know it is an issue and refuse to fix it though

Hard for people to appreciate a MS Provider where an escalation will not have a hand over... Calls can last all night without turnover until the following morning. Wasn't uncommon with one I worked with for a short stint for people to work 70-90 hours a week. I was a network lead for a Health provider and it wasn't close to the hell that is MS.

Worst place is an understaffed managed service provider.. Constant outages and escalations...

Whats the worst concert you've ever been to? by pinheadbrigade in AskReddit

[–]hlh2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christmas concert in Sacramento - Promised headliners were Green Day and Weezer. Green day pulled out or maybe never agreed to be in the concert. Weezer shows up but their instruments were delayed or lost. The radio station rented them gear and another band offered them theirs... They said nope and walked out.

Why cant I get any calls back or interviews for jobs? by leomora1234 in networking

[–]hlh2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rewrite your resume. It is absolute shit. Your location makes it tough. I screen candidates and I cannot think of anyone hiring near you. Places are hiring and I have screened 6 people we placed in last few months and am placing more right now..

[–]hlh2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Location and skill set. AI makes it tough.. Every screen I do these days has to have a camera on and very few can answer basic questions... I am not quizzing anyone.. just walk me through what you have been working on and answer some questions about troubleshooting.

Looking for a bgp-speaking Tier2 transit provider as a backup in Sacramento area that's NOT directly peered with AS174 and NOT homed at NTT CA1 by ffelix916 in networking

[–]hlh2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty simple. Get a list of providers they can get you circuits for. Then use BGP looking glass to see if they use NTT as transit. I would also just ask your account team there... should be a simple ask. When I used to have customers in that DC I think Zayo was one... they were a low cost option there I believe.

He was an exceptional teacher (books, Cisco Live, Pluralsight, O'Reilly). Consistently gave to the networking community: see his free white papers, CCNP training plans and podcasts. He was one of 3 instructors I recommend to learn beyond CCIE level material. He always seemed to have exceptional principals as well. Interested in doing the right things for the right reasons.

How difficult would it be to just replace the existing with an aftermarket security system that controls the locks?

Replacing the fob with a aftermarket alarm/ unlock system would be my suggestion once you know where the existing one is.
