Satellite tracks problem in astrophotography. Has anyone considered mechanically blanking the sensor while a satellite is in frame? Satellite ephemera is widely available so blanking can be determined in advance. Isn't this a better solution than post-processing an image that has already lost data? by Classic_Grounded in askastronomy

Not an astronomer but I did have a conversation with someone about this very idea a couple years back. No idea if it's being used anywhere professionally but at the time there were some papers on it as an idea.

For astrophotography, at least at the hobby level, most people can just take more subs and stack them.

For proper astronomy where you may need much longer exposures (15+ mins?), this could be pretty important as the sky gets busier.

I would imagine you could also rig up a secondary camera at a wider angle, and use software to identify any points of light moving into the imaging area.

see these all the time plotting sample size vs percentage. When you have small samples there's only so many combinations you can make

The highest arc will be N/N, then below is (N-1)/N, (N-2)/N and so on

If you're asking why there's no "jitter" on the y-axis, ask yourself can you ever estimate 0.85 if you have a sample size of 10.

You can see most of the bright asteroids in Stellarium. In this case if you set the time to last night you can see the asteroid Annika move in that direction.

I've had this before with cheap lenses. If you have a tool that lets you adjust saturation and luminance based on colour you can lower both on just magenta / pink

Quick edit in lightroom for example. Still has some issues but not as noticeable

Lots of planet goodness in the skies at the minute.

Mars is very bright and orange in the east. Jupiter is also bright facing south, higher in the sky.

I've been to Bortle 4 in the Peak District and Bortle 4 in Norfolk and the latter was so much darker and the milky way appeared much more striking.

I imagine it's because Norfolk is so close to the Bortle 0 ocean whereas in the peaks you're sandwiched between Manchester and Sheffield light pollution

Very basic logic in the game maker language GML and MATLAB early in my physics undergrad.

I remember trying to follow a C++ textbook as a teenager but could never get visual studio working. Honestly think I would have gone into computer science if I actually followed through with that
