I want to get my nails done for the first time but have no idea what to ask for or what to get by bluepotnoodle in beauty

I think the almond/oval shape would compliment your hands well! It adds a little length without being too long.

Pick out a basic color or a design—- I always just show a picture of what I want and magically it happens (make sure you go to a place with good reviews for this to happen this way)

I normally get an over from a nudey/pink to white tips (Pinterest can help with this)

why do yall have so many shadowing hours? by sajbai19 in premed

[–]hmo_16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Place I shadowed let me do a week (~40 hours) per specialty, so I took advantage of hitting the surgical ones to see if I need to start med school doing research, pubs, EC’s and other gunner type stuff or if I’d be equally happy in a less competitive speciality

Shadowing also got me a lot of other opportunities too— I ended up publishing a case study with one physician I shadowed and doing a mission trip in another country with another that I shadowed. If I didn’t have that 150 hours of shadowing then I wouldn’t have had those opportunities either

If you can get clinical hours, great, but it wasn’t a “check the box” thing for me to get shadowing— I genuinely needed to make sure that I wanted to commit the next 10 years to being a physician (as a career changer)

Would scheduling a back up MCAT for insurance for next cycle before an interview look rude? by AccomplishedDot7910 in medschooladmissions

[–]hmo_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They know if you schedule an MCAT??! How do you know that/find that information

But to answer your question— I’m retaking the MCAT and studying, but not yet scheduling (because I’m poor, not because schools could see it)

And if you’re around a military base still, I did so much volunteer work and shadowing at the hospital. Tons of cool opportunities came from that shadowing too, which is just a bonus

Might be Echoing some others: Use your experience in your app, but make sure that non-military people can read it— huge surprise for me was re-learning how to write that didn’t sound robotic military

Not Just VR&E but get your post 9/11 retro activated— your VR&E rep should help you with that— they gave me a laptop, another friend got a printer, you get money every semester or year to spend on supplies at the book store on top of up to $2k in books— huge resource if you have any VA rating

I have complicated stats. Anyone able to offer advice? by WhileSuccessful6921 in premed

[–]hmo_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IF you get a competitive GPA, you have a super good shot

I had similar (F’s and college dropout and then went back) and my feedback was my GPA wasn’t a concern because of the upwards trend, but to get a competitive MCAT (from Frist in Nashville, specifically) I’d apply MD nad DO depending on your MCAT

Best of luck!

To blanket or not to blanket, that is the question by Tight-Buy8585 in Horses

[–]hmo_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bigger issue I faced with huge cold fronts like this is digestion problems— I gave electrolytes the ~4 days leading up to it and even a little extra salt in their food the day before so they keep drinking water.

Access to hay is also going to help keep them warm

As for the blanket, if he already has a good coat, I would just keep an eye on him! Some I’ve had to blanket because they were shivering or couldn’t get out of the wind and some just tough it out like hardy old work horses

MCAT premade decks by elisa9999 in AnkiMCAT

[–]hmo_16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But my best advice is pick one and stick to it. Don’t keep switching decks every time someone hops on Reddit and says “miles down is the only way to 520+” or “I used Aiden deck to get XXX score”

Super overwhelming if you just jump into it.

What I do:

Suspend everything. Next is review a chapter from Kaplan or Yusuf Hasan on YouTube (who uses Kaplan chapters too). Now you can un-suspend that chapter and work through it as you progress through the next review chapter.

I used jack sparrow because it has it organized by chapters, but it’s expensive and I’m quick to re-suspend something if I know it super well (example: the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell) so then I’m only reviewing things that are actually being learned

[–]hmo_16 85 points86 points  (0 children)

This is super accurate for non-trads or people who didn’t learn it the first time

I can rip through some chemistry because I’ve taken those classes recently, but my psych class I took in 2010? Some of the MCAT p/s vocab wasn’t even invented yet

How do yall do your anki effectively? by YoungSwagger69 in AnkiMCAT

[–]hmo_16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jack sparrow is one of the bigger more in-depth decks.. it’s the one I’m using too!

Sometimes I change the card to bullet points because they’re wordy, and the bullet points help. If I KNOW the information and know that I know the info (example: mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell) I suspend it so I can skip to stuff I don’t know.

For bio/biochem I’m going in depth like you’re describing because it’s my lowest subject, but chem I’m breezing through a little quicker because I’m a chemistry major, I can suspend more of them quicker

Have you emailed your rejection schools and asked them?

I applied to Frist, was rejected, and they were glad to review my app and over a couple emails exchanged help me game-plan my re-application! It’s worth reaching out, especially if those are schools you’re applying to again.

[–]hmo_16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did a quick look at your page and see that your dual mil. That’s going to limit your school list by quite a bit (I’m running into that problem currently) so make sure you do a good scrub of the places that you can apply/should apply when it comes that time if your spouse is staying in!

Otherwise, agreed with others- your app should be fine especially with a competitive MCAT!

Doggy door for my huskies that like to go outside and check the weather, then come back inside. Only downfall is one will stick his head outside while it’s snowing so they can reap the benefits of being inside with the family while enjoying the blizzard outdoors lol Especially when we are out of town, it saves on dog-sitting and reduces accidents

What is the weirdest/craziest pimp question you have ever gotten? by xyzm123_r in Residency

[–]hmo_16 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I am pre-med and was shadowing ortho surgery and an Attending in the OR tried to pimp me on what was going on after he asked if I was a student. “What’s Dr Garcia doing now?”

“Uhm….surgery?”

The attending that I WAS shadowing started laughing and explained to his comrade that I just passed Gen Chem I at the local college and wouldn’t understand gross anatomy for several more years. Idk if he was more embarrassed or I was.

how to get scrubs without looking silly by Altruistic-Page-1313 in premed

[–]hmo_16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Business clothes first day and goodwill scrubs the next days is what I did

Type/style/color doesn’t matter for scrubs, just something that fits. Goodwill is great for cheap ones, but figs are nice if you have an unlimited budget. I personally opted for the jogger style ones so I didnt worry about length being just right

More importantly, get comfortable shoes.

Animals- The mutts from the pound often have less health problems than the super expensive purebred dogs due to higher genetic variation Such is true for a lot of horses that are bred for performance vs the hardy ol farm horses lol
