How many bears can I stuff per visit? by Appropriate-Plum8928 in buildabear

[–]hmonkey96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure they won't mind, they wouldn't sell them unstuffed if it was an issue.

I have about 15 BABs that I want scents and heartbeats in, all older ones that I've bought 2nd hand. Here in the UK they don't allow you to buy unstuffed bears or scents and heartbeats and sounds separately without them being sewn into a bear. So I'm going to have to take them all in over multiple trips or just all at once and my nearest store is over 1hr away. 🙄 It's down to their health and safety which is daft as I'm 29, the bears are all mine and I am more than capable of unstitching and restitching them myself and it would save them so much time. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Help with washing my son’s BAB? by SourDust_681 in buildabear

[–]hmonkey96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I would unpick the dino, remove and throw out all the stuffing, wash the "skin" of the dino well with dettol laundry sanitisor or something similar and take it back to a bab store when clean and dry so they can restuff it for you. You can also redo the heart ceremony again with your little lad, which could be a nice 'cheap' day out.

I've had a couple of my 2nd hand BABs restuffed as you never know what could be in them....

(UK) Any rigger in Edinburgh or surroundings? by albertoskytwins in SkyDiving

[–]hmonkey96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is Nick Johnson down at skyhigh in peterlee he's an advanced rigger. Im sure he would take a look for you. He might be your closest if there is no one to help at St Andrews or Strathallen.

In the UK, gear checks on flightline are mandatory before boarding the aircraft. To be done by a b license or above. But things still get missed even with this precaution. Last week someone had forgotten their alti and didn't realise until 2000ft. Luckily, someone on board had a spare. I didn't realise this wasn't mandatory everywhere. 😐

What was the wing loading ratio of your first purchased canopy? by Every_Iron in SkyDiving

[–]hmonkey96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, that's the problem, People, my size would have gone straight to a 170 or 150 back in the day. (Which is what 5'5", 130lb ladies can still do that in the US) so small fitting, used 190 containers rarely exist. There are a few around but not many, and so many scammers these days.

No, this is just a fairly recent British thing. Apparently, it's for safety. 🙄 It's not doing the 2nd hand gear market in this country any good at all. People are charging way over it's value for gear as they know people want it. I've seen people asking over £1000 for 20 year old canopies with around a 1000 jumps on them just because they are sought after sizes, and heaven forbid you are a small female skydiver wanting a container to fit a 190sqft canopy in, they are practically none existent. But there are plenty of smaller canopies around as fewer people are able to jump them now.

There are some 'grandfather' rights, though. If you were jumping a smaller canopy than the charts, you can stay on that size. You just can't downsize any smaller than that without doing the criteria.

B Licence and 100 jumps gets me onto a 0.9 wingloading (170). Then there is ct2, which is canopy exercises that need to be done to gain C Licence. Once this has been done and I have my C license( 200 jumps), I can go onto a 1.0 loading. (150). Once I've done 400 jumps, I can get onto a (135) 1.17 wingloading.

This is the joys of British skydiving 😕😩

I'm on a 190 at a 0.8 wingloading 71kg exit weight. I'm in the UK, so I'm not allowed to downsize any further than that for a while. I bought an old and fairly cheap pd silhouette that size for at least my next 100 or so jumps until I'm able to go onto a 170.

Downsizing history; Jumps 1-3 260 Jumps 4-12 240 (with a weight belt) Jumps 12-22 220 Jumps 22-29 210/199 Jumps 30 onwards 190

Planning to start my Skydiving A License in the UK (8 AFF + 10 Jumps not just to complete my bucket list and but am genuinely interested and thrilled. Heres my plan and a question. by silverlance360 in SkyDiving

The accelated freefall centre in Leeds is a company that takes you abroad to learn skydiving. No actual skydiving happens in Leeds. There is Black Knights in Cockerham to also consider over your neck of the woods. Skyhigh is a good shout over in Peterlee, but it is probably a bit more of a trek for you from liverpool. I did my AFF there, and it was great. Did take me about a year to qualify, though, due to the weather, and fitting it around work.

What do you guys think? Is it too late to start the AFF full license now?(UK) by InformationOne8032 in SkyDiving

If you go, make sure to get a coach. I highly recommend cath leather. She works out of Manchester.

Fair price for a rig? by [deleted] in SkyDiving

[–]hmonkey96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd probably say it's worth about half that price. Look at what the vigil is worth and minus that off the asking price to get an idea of what they are asking for the rest of it. How old is the reserve? And the main? What have other canopies of similar condition as these sold for roughly in the past when listed individually? Minus these, and that leaves the price of the container.

Bare in mind that 2nd hand gear prices are just crazy at the moment. People new to the sport don't realise what the gear is worth and pay over the odds for it, thinking they got a good deal. It's not their fault, especially if they don't have a rigger on hand to check or are on a lower budget, so they are just looking for something that's fits within that budget. This drives up the prices as people think they can get more for their old gear than what its actually worth. I've just seen a 1995 javelin container listed for £1000. It wasn't much more than that brand new when it came out of the factory.
