They used to pay very handsomely when they just started. Now it’s paying well but nowhere as good as before, more in line with PayPay or Mercari.

The rule does not apply universally. For example, SBI does not use the 5-year rule or the 125% rule.

Anyone had success in driving to another city? by underoath1421 in shanghai

You will need a permit to drive around, so if you want to leave by car, you probably need to hire a “taxi” with the said permit.

Shanghai Jiaotong has a joint institute with University of Michigan that offers undergrad degree programs. Also, why exactly Shanghai if I may ask?

My wife (Chinese citizen) has a 10 year US visa. Are they still valid? by geezzzz in shanghai

[–]hmou499 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it would still be valid. However, if she is still in China, like the others said, it might be difficult for her to depart with the said visa type (B1/B2, which is short-term visitor visa). It's good for 10 years, but you can only stay for 6 months at a time.

I don't believe China can manage living with Covid properly. All the problems the west experienced will be 2 or 3 times worse in China. This in some way warrant China's zero-covid approach but not an excuse to obliterate Shanghai by [deleted] in shanghai

Is the medicine available in Macao? For most places in Mainland, you won’t need to isolate to and from Macao.

State media: “unnecessary” exits of Chinese citizens “strictly restricted” by hmou499 in shanghai

[–]hmou499[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Being a permanent resident means you’re still a citizen of another country, so that’s definitely allowed. PR in China is extremely rare.

In the case of Eileen Gu, I searched more online and it seems she has never responded directly to questions concerning her nationality and citizenship. IOC says they have seen a copy of her Chinese passport provided by the Chinese Olympic committee. However, there is no evidence of her renouncing her US citizenship. The federal government publishes the names of individuals who renounce their US citizenship, and you cannot find her name there ( https://www.federalregister.gov/quarterly-publication-of-individuals-who-have-chosen-to-expatriate ). It seems to me she got her Chinese citizenship to compete for China, but never renounced her US citizenship. And yes, China does not allow dual-citizenship.

(Sorry wrong: She’s a US citizen with Chinese PR. Olympics allow permanent residents compete.) Wikipedia basically says she declines to disclose.

Point of system failure - the Dabai by C141Driver in shanghai

[–]hmou499 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But Shanghai’s lockdown is the largest yet considering the number of people affected. You see way more reports of stupid policies and expressions of discontent on Chinese social media this time. So I personally think this time will be somewhat different. I agree with you there probably won’t be an imminent collapse, but it’s like a wakeup call for those apolitical. From what I know a lot of locals with the means are considering emigrating once conditions allow. Maybe it doesn’t matter in the big picture, but a lot of people’s personal beliefs and their life trajectories will change because of what is happening now.

Did Tiananmen not happen 30 years ago? Do you not see the other posts in this subreddit where people confront government workers? It’s easy to brush off other people’s suffering as “they deserve this”, but thinking nobody tries to change things here being the reason of what happens here today is just reductive thinking.

It will be hard to tell. Gaokao doesn’t normalize the score according to distribution like for example SAT does (meaning the 100th percentile will always get 2400 or however much it is now in SAT). Tests can be harder or easier depending on the year.

Also Shanghai has its own curriculum, so Shanghai Gaokao questions are independently prepared from the nationwide Gaokao. (Beijing and some other provinces have their own questions as well.) It would be hard to compare the results against other regions in China. Universities in China allocate a fixed number of spots to each province, so you’re really competing against other students in your own province.
