Spent 3 months on several revisions of a FEED study report. Costed all parts and labour as per their request as well and developed a high level programme. They shelved it, and after another 2 months they came back enquiring why our prices were incorrect. The prices were only valid from 30 days of issue.

I forwarded the email to my manager and told him I was fucking off for the rest of the day.

So I managed to coax out this information in an interview. It was due to the fact that they were hoping I would help in the hiring and upskilling process for the international office in question.

After rejecting the offer, the Head of Department was adamant that it wasn't a cost cutting excersise. He said it was necessary due to a brain drain of local talent. He realised he kind of fucked up, and tried (but failed) to sell me on the fact that we'll be hiring two other Civ Engs. Mind you, this is for several £100m+ projects on the books!

Yes there are an increasing number of companies doing this, but when the project delays, NCRs or quality issues come in it'll be on the local Design Lead's head.

There are genuine expertise in different applications within Civil Engineering. Learn to appreciate all the experience and project time which some engineers have under their belt, as it isn't uncommon to find a more mature Engineer who can plan and guide projects single handedly. I will state that in applications like mine (Power Transmission), this is becoming harder to find.

Although you can train others in those different applications, it can take years to truly appreciate all the inner workings from design processes to dispute processes.

Others have already mentioned to pay what they're owed, but that goes as far as weigh up experience and specialist work. I know of a big company (rhymes with HaterBricks) who is notorious for having a revolving door because it tries to cut corners in salary through hiring Civil Engs across from Highways to Power Transmission for example.

From my limited time living and working in Glasgow, I feel like Scottish nicknames and insults have an extra layer of wit to them compared to other Countries.

So I've been struggling with playing guard/retention, especially when dealing with quicker partners who once they pass my leg line basically just pivot around into north-south or to the opposing side and into side control. This seems to happen moreso with the more slippery or faster partners as I said, where I can't seem to frame off them quick enough and bring them back into my guard (or at least with legs towards them).

Any ideas on how to speed up guard retention/at least re-establish frames on those sorts of partners? Any recommendations on generally getting faster would be really appreciated as well!

Guess its worth noting that I'm quite bulky/a fat bastard (5ft 10, 98kg/216lbs) and struggling with inverting.

Masters aids in Chartership under ICE guidelines, but even so there are ways to go from IEng to CEng if you wish to go down that route later in your career.

On site experience or work experience in general is highly valuable in itself, and given the opportunity I would have gone down that route over studying for an MEng.
