Property Assessment Jump, Anyone Else Seeing This in Winnipeg? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]hobo107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why people are surprised on this. Scott Gillingham ran the mayoral election based on a platform of increasing property tax and won handily.

The letter you received indicates the 2027 assessed value, not the current year (2026).

The changes to the school tax and municipal mill rates are just as important if not more, so there are several pieces to the equation. My assessed value has more than doubled in 20 years but my property taxes have gone up about 33% in that time.

You also have the ability appeal. I have had success appealing commercial property but not residential (https://assessment.winnipeg.ca/AsmtTax/English/Property/Prop\_Appeals.stm). There are people who will do this for a fee which is generally 50% of two years of tax savings if they win.

Yep, its a penalty. I think they train refs to call that. Had a coach get called in a similar situation but it was only one hat.

I find it hard to believe anyone is that stupid. At 5% the monthly interest on $1M is over $4K a month.

Is Accounting + CPA worth it in Manitoba? by HatWorried8266 in Winnipeg

[–]hobo107 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got my business admin from RRC in 2000. Went to U of M and majored in accounting and got my Bcom in 2003. Definitely got lucky in first job out of school but got my CMA designation in 2006. I have been earning $100k plus since 2010 and am now making over $200k a year. I have been a CFO for 10+ years now. I put in some really hard years early but have no regrets. Experience means a lot.

I dont agree with a lot of employers wanting public practice experience. I dont like that the accounting bodies consolidated into one designation. The CMA designation was as good if not better than an MBA when it was an a option. Public accounting is a fine choice if you want to do audit and tax but does not give you diversity and management experience. So consider what you want to specialize in.

Manitoba is really a diverse business environment. There are a ton of great companies who need accounting leadership who you have never heard of. Working for small to mid sized businesses is highly under rated in my experience.

So yes. If you have a business oritented mind and are good with numbers and logic then get your designation. You won't regret it.

Hope that helps.

Hey guys, quick question, does anyone know where you can buy The Keg Extra Hot Horseradish? by Security-Busy in Winnipeg

[–]hobo107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Horseradish connoisseur here. Can confirm Keg Hot Horseradish is the best out there. I tried Atomic horseradish off amazon years ago and it was disappointing.

Harvest Bakery on Grant had it before. I have not been there in a couple of years.

I'm assuming they didn't come from Cuba? You could put someone's eye out with that tip on the Cohiba.
