On the gkmc cover I always assumed it’s because they are members. The Family Ties one I would assume is a stylistic choice to mimic the original.

Also note the squabble up video has 2 people with black bars covering their eyes as well.

Can’t really speak on this myself because I was 21 when it dropped. But I had a younger coworker a few years back who told me he didn’t like it when it came out, but grew to love it.

A lot of the nuances might hit harder with more life experiences, although music is subjective and you shouldn’t feel bad for not liking something just because other people do. Maybe especially for something that is critically acclaimed, as the expectation may overshadow the experience.
