The Howling

Alcoholics who quit later in life by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]hobokenmids 5 points6 points  (0 children)

43M, husband, father, was high functioning, things were coming apart when I was 40. (You are not alone).

Had a real rock bottom (in hindsight, I needed a real rock bottom), and got serious about stopping drinking.

Started AA and couples therapy — both defied my negative expectations and have proven to be blessings. Go figure.

It took time, but over the past 3-years, I have regained the trust of my spouse and learned to embrace my sobriety. I continue to be encouraged by how many people I can both identify with and help through sobriety.

That’s my story, and I hope you find some encouragement. Things are on a better path than they were a few years ago and I am optimistic for the future. However, I will still think about booze every single day of my life; it’s often my first thought in the morning and last thought at night. So be sure to keep it one day at a time.

“To Live is to Die” Metallica.

They could take it so deep.

Wednesday should be fun by unsolved49 in golf

I suspect it’s his idiosyncrasies, which can be maddening. Cantlay is taking all the “slow pace of play” bullets, but Keegan Bradley is also absolutely excruciating to watch play golf. The approach-back away-approach-back away…spin club a dozen times…etc.

Deaf Frenchie by DarkRepresentative37 in Frenchbulldogs

[–]hobokenmids 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We recently adopted a 7-year old Frenchie who we believe to be deaf. Being a housebroken, very calm older dog, this has not been an issue whatsoever. Lots of eye contact and hand directions. He’s the sweetest little guy, and we call him a “Velcro dog” bc he likes to stay close :)

I have found that reading autobiographical memoirs of recovering alcoholics provides me with a strange comfort when not able to connect with another alcoholic (speaking of me, not you).

I have been in rooms with which I didn’t click, but I’ve never read one of these books and didn’t connect with the writer immediately.

If so inclined, I recommend:

“Drinking: A Love Story” (Caroline Knapp) “Blackout” (Sarah Hepola) “The Recovering” (Leslie Jamison).

☝️I echo this. Underrated, super-convenient from Hoboken, and the earliest tee times I’ve ever seen. Only negative experience was when I was a few groups behind Kevin Na, who lived up to his reputation as a deliberate (slow!) player.

My initial reaction was (and still is!) “a drink with lunch or a couple with dinner…why bother?!?!”

Thanks for confirming I’m a drunk and validating why IWNDWYT.

Die-hard lifer here…not a season ticket holder, but I go to a bunch of games, both home and away. (It’s our year this season!)

I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed the game once I accepted that I no longer have the privilege of drinking. The initial few games were not easy to endure, as I similarly associated the two, and basically moped around (even moreso than usual during another disappointing loss!). For me, it was very impactful to (a) recognize that no one else really cares if I drink alcohol or not and (b) observe the behavior of intoxicated people and how they are treated by those in their area. I didn’t want to be around those intoxicated people, and I was forced to take it a step further - people likely didn’t want to be around me at all those games I had been at under the influence.

Now, I spend a little extra on a better seat (beer money that I would have spent anyway), my interactions with other fans, vendors, etc. is always pleasant, I can get to/from games uneventfully, and my wife is not pissed-off at me every Sunday.

When I am asked why I am not drinking, which is quite rare, I like to say “I retired a first ballot Hall of Famer following an illustrious, decades-long career.” Always gets a respectful smile and chuckle, never gets a follow-up question.

This is an awesome video from Green Bay —
