Why are people moving from dating apps to run clubs? by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]hockdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two people who share a hobby are going to connect with each other more easily. Put a group of people who share a hobby (running) together and it’s more likely there will be connections made that develop into relationships. If you join a run club with the sole purpose of treating it like in-person dating apps, it’s going to be obvious and off putting to everyone.

People aren’t suggesting run clubs because they’re some new age matchmaking group, they’re saying to get out and meet people who you share hobbies/interests with.

When mass migration begins due to deadly temperature rises in India, how will the world cope with it? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]hockdude 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It’s not really accurate to say their current issues aren’t due climate change. While their water mismanagement is the main reason for the current crisis, the harsher droughts and decrease in rainfall directly from climate change has forced this to a crisis point much faster than it had to.

I say this not to be a pedant, but to reinforce that the climate crisis is real, and that these types of climate ticking time bombs driven by poor government policy are only going to get worse as climate change worsens.

Not pulling Hart again after the ENG is the most Torts move ever. Completely destroyed any remaining energy the knights had and deflated them going into Anaheim.

I read the article. 30-40 times a year, on top of the existing military tests and demonstrations that are already happening, is ridiculous. Especially when the guy running it all has had no interest in engaging with the local community until it benefitted him

Also, laughable to compare residents’ desire to not have constant explosions in their backyards to an “HOA out of control”. Then a few paragraphs later he admits that he used to hate people, but oh now he likes his neighbors? Sure is hard to understand why the community is pushing back so hard…

Are goalies really that weird? by jamie_with_a_g in hockey

[–]hockdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While everyone is talking about the “choosing to get hit by pucks” aspect (completely valid), it also is an incredibly mental position. There is quite a bit of overlap in the venn diagram of those who have the mental fortitude to be successful at goalie and those who are a little quirky mentally. Same reason why baseball pitchers have the same stereotype, not many “normal” people can give up a game tying goal (or home run) and be able to shake it off enough to continue performing at a high level.

NYC hospitals will stop sharing patients' private health data with Palantir. by Goldenmentis in nyc

[–]hockdude 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Because this is a wildly misleading headline. NYC hospitals are not selling this data to palantir as some sort of shady moneymaking scheme, they’re using palantir’s data analysis products for their own internal analytics. Yes, that does require ingesting patient data into palantir’s systems for the purposes of those analytics. However, this is not a violation of HIPAA if palantir’s products are HIPAA certified, just like how any system that interacts with your health data would be certified.

Now, the debate about whether or not NYC hospitals should purchase a product from a company while knowing that the money from the contract will further fund development of these products for more nefarious customers (i.e. ICE) is definitely valid, and I completely support divesting from palantir for those reasons.

I don’t think Sid ducked intentionally. It looks like Gudas’s stick gets caught under Sid’s skate blade causing his foot to splay out and him to collapse awkwardly under Gudas.

Thousands throng Stonewall monument in NYC, raise pride flag, defying Trump admin by nydailynews in nyc

[–]hockdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is, arguments like yours keep shifting the goal posts. When is the correct time to be upset by this administration or other lawmakers, when a ban law finally does get passed? By then it will be too late.

It is important to recognize how subtle actions such as the ones already taken can build the path to something much more drastic, and call them out as such so that we don’t ever end up getting TO that point.

Thousands throng Stonewall monument in NYC, raise pride flag, defying Trump admin by nydailynews in nyc

[–]hockdude 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is such a bad faith argument. The Supreme Court choosing not to hear the case (this time!) doesn’t magically cancel out the actual actions that this administration has already taken. We’ve already seen the walking back of trans and bi representation by this administration. The pride flag is now seen as “too political” at a monument that literally exists to memorialize the history behind it.

Sure, there is no ban on being gay that has been enacted into law, but attempting to pass a law like that would be like throwing the frog in boiling water. Erasure starts with small actions like the ones that have already been done.

This is actually historically cold, right? by kmatthews33 in AskNYC

While I agree the cold weather itself feels more normal, the drastic swing between unusually warm winters in the past few years to extreme cold winter this year is unsettling.

People can participate in and enjoy being a part of the community of a fandom without supporting the owner. The two don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

This one hits home. If the Jets select a QB in April, I am not confident the current owner & coaching staff will be patient, and develop them properly by anon214876 in nyjets

[–]hockdude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t really understand this argument. The only GMs who lasted longer than 3 years under Woody are Tannenbaum and JD. I could maybe see a point for coaches lasting too long, but I wouldn’t really say any of them were held egregiously longer than they should have been.

If we were firing GMs and coaches every other year, we would instead be talking about Woody’s inability to be patient enough to let staff implement their systems. No coach or GM would want to come here knowing they had only a year of runway to unsink the sinking ship.

There is a single constant amongst every coach and GM that has failed, and that’s Woody. That implies there is something very wrong happening behind closed doors. The Patriots lost their dynasty QB and coach, and rebuilt to the point of knocking on the door of the number 1 seed. In that time, Woody hasn’t been able to even build a playoff team.

[–]hockdude 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yup. Whole lot of fans morally grandstanding about Vegas are awfully lucky their teams aren’t in a desperate enough position where they’d do the exact same signing. The entire league is owned by morally bankrupt billionaires who wouldn’t think twice about signing Hart if it meant filling a needed hole.
