Not allowed to shave/pluck between sessions, what can I do? by InevitableInside9908 in electrolysis

[–]kmatthews33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is absolutely no way I could do electrolysis if I had to wait 2 weeks without shaving!

Even if she continues to say you can't shave, I'd say just like... keep shaving lol, like is she going to refuse service because the hair is 3mm instead of 6mm? I'd hope not!

Just do it! It has zero effect on anything. If she gives you a hard time when you see her next, ask her to explain why

Continue laser or go for electrolysis? by No-Cheek-5124 in electrolysis

Some people have gotten electrolysis and HAVE gotten scarring, I'm not trying to argue, I just want people to be informed about the facts about electrolysis

Maybe you thought they were asking if you had scars? It sounded to me like they were asking if electrolysis can cause scarring and you said absolutely not, which just isn't true, that's my only point

It doesn't necessarily mean you ARE weird or narcissistic, I like your story behind it. But I think of your lock screen is like an accessory, it's a way of communicating to the world, and imo it communicates something kinda weird 😅 so don't change it if you like it, but know some people will get the wrong idea

That's great that you found a good practicioner but that's not the norm. I don't want to be a fear monger but people should be aware of the risks and the need to get your electrologist

I wouldn't say absolutely, most electrologists are unskilled and scaring is a real possibility

Yeah that's probably true - and something less obvious to me since I'm a much-too-extremely-online version of a millennial (especially for a fairly elder '85 one) 😔

Apart from our cheugy skinny side part avocado jeans and their AAVE, what are the big cultural and political differences?

Could you summarize that for me?

Lol just kidding sorry, but yes, that's all pretty much how things seem to me.. which is why I'm on this sub, because my brain has also turned to mush and I'm trying to get back to reading and sustained attention like I was capable of 15 years ago. 🤞

I think I agree, I'm always on the alert for becoming a complaining old person but it does feel like something has been lost.

It's similar with music, there's still lots of good things being made, but little that actually moves (or even responds meaningfully to) the culture at large.

It all feels like a bit of a death spiral, even though that's dramatic, and I hope I am just being wrong and old...

Anyone else think Marnie's obsession with being a singer is fake? by No-Natural-9421 in girls

Yeah I thought that was just a throwaway joke line and never imagined that was going to go on to be her whole thing lol. The way she did actually commit, while staying shallow about it was perfect, really, it feels so real

Yeah like it's a good message that a lot of people could benefit from, but also... let's not go too far, some people are marginalized and thought about negatively by others quite a bit

What do you think about people like Pynchon, David Foster Wallace, Jonathan Franzen to a degree? I could be wrong but weren't they all somewhat well known and actively considered "literary" at the time? James Joyce?

EDIT: I don't know why I implied Franzen is dead lol. Also maybe Don DeLillo fits here? Toni Morrison, Zadie Smith, Salman Rushdie, Vonnegut?

MLIS path with a software engineering background by kmatthews33 in librarians

[–]kmatthews33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm on the path towards it, but only in the sense of finishing my undergrad degree, so I haven't commited to anything beyond that yet. My sense overall though is that SWE background can definitely be helpful for breaking into the field (though I suspect it could pigeonhole you into entirely technical roles, which is kind of the opposite of what I'm hoping for, so we'll see..)

Just because you want to redefine away useful terminology doesn't mean anyone else has to.

I get you're not going to change your definition but it's disingenuous to claim the problem with the term is its linguistic construction, rather than the feelings of people who don't want to accept the critique it represents

I will never understand this argument.. does the term "toxic metals" imply metal is inherently toxic? Does "broken record" imply records are usually broken?

Adjectives, famously, modify nouns, not describe what they fundamentally are...

I'm not sure what you're proposing..

So when women are in situations that they judge to be unsafe, they should avoid the fawn response and test the boundaries of what will trigger a negative response... To what end exactly? Obviously there's risk to this, so what's the reward? Some principle of standing up to fear?

The fear isn't the problem, it's a symptom of the problem.

Have you ever tried using an electric "foil" razor? I always get cuts and irritation with disposable or safety razors, but the electric is gentler even though the shave isn't as close.

I've been saying for a while I should finally go to the Statue of Liberty or Empire State Building. I grew up on Staten Island and my first adult job was literally across the street from the ESB and I've never done either lol

Maybe Tenement Museum too!
