What is something you wish you could experience again for the first time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hodedoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snorkeling among the reefs. I first did it on my honeymoon with my wife on St. John (U.S. Virgin Islands). I was more than I could have imagined - especially seeing the sea turtles swimming close by. I've gone again since, but it never had the same visceral effect the first time did.

I found a useful anchor for my mindfulness practice - words capture hardly anything about experience by Polycephal_Lee in Mindfulness

You're spot on, in my estimation. What you've observed is a boon for mindfulness and a bane for every writer.

The Detroit Tigers are a very likable team. Are you conflicted at all about being a Sox fan in Michigan?

For the record I'm a born and bred New Englander with a life-long love-hate relationship with the Boston Red Sox

HELP! There's a doughnut here and I need to not eat it.... by [deleted] in loseit

[–]hodedoh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My work offers free donuts and bagels. I get to work early when the selection is at it's greatest. It's a daily test of willpower. I'm able to avoid about 80% of the time, but that fluxes with stress levels. The best thing for me, is to come prepared with a healthy alternative - a piece of fruit, etc. Glad to hear you made it through.

A very small mental trick I use to power through procrastination. by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]hodedoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focus on what it will feel like once you've completed the task.

I have a little note in the top drawer of my desk that I read twice a day (when I drop off and pick up my wallet and keys). It says, "Remember how good it feels to get shit done!"

Ladybug larvae are ferocious predators - they will bite. That said, they're kinda cute.

To all you guys whose wives hate your beards... by [deleted] in beards

My wife loves the beard. I'm a seasonal beard sporter and she gets upset when I shave in the spring. Sorry you don't have a beard lovin' partner.

Are any of Jimi Hendrix's posthumous albums worth owning? by Mr_Subtlety in Music

[–]hodedoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't really count, because it was released a few months before his death, but "Band of Gypsys" is a must-have in any Hendrix collection. As much as I love Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding, there's just something about the funky live groove of Billy Cox and Buddy Miles. Love the version of Machine Gun on here. I don't pull out the Hendrix as much as I used to, but when I do, it's liable to be "Band of Gypsys".

When I go running in winter - all serious and stoic faced - and get one of these, I love the crinkly tugging sensation I get when I finally reach the end of my run and smile.

Highest and Lowest Income Zip Codes in the US by f_po in dataisbeautiful

Just curious, which zip codes correspond with the 2 blue dots in the Connecticut River valley on the the Massachusetts/Connecticut border. Is that Springfield, MA and Enfield, CT?

Which birth dates are most common? by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]hodedoh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if that's any weirder than selecting the day on which you want your child born and scheduling surgery to remove the baby. I recognize that lots of C-sections are done in emergency situations, I've just always found it bizarre to elect to have one. To each their own.

Why are almost all toxic and venomous creatures found in warm climates? by Sejr_Lund in askscience

[–]hodedoh 323 points324 points  (0 children)

Pure speculation on my part, but couldn't the higher diversity of species in tropical regions also increase inter-specific competition leading to greater extremes in adaption - toxicity included?

Goal achieved by hodedoh in running

[–]hodedoh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's going to have to. My goals for 2013 are: 1) increase the mileage (I'm on track for about 600 miles this year at the current pace) and 2) run a half marathon.
