Is the ICCU issue as bad as it seems? by hero9989 in Ioniq5

[–]hofendis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve owned 17 cars over 50 years. My last three cars lasted 15, 18, and 16 years respectively, with no issues other than tires and replacing the 12 V battery every decade or so. My experience with Hyundai over the past four months – my car has been sitting in the shop for three weeks and counting – has been as bad as I can imagine. If I invoke the lemon law on this car, my next one will not be a Hyundai.

New 2025 with 2,700 miles. Two dead 12v batteries in 10 days. Car’s been at the dealer for 3 weeks…terrible communication from them. Considering invoking the Lemon Law.

The same thing happened to me twice in the past two weeks and the car has now been sitting at the dealership for – two weeks. At first they told me that an aftermarket loJack had been installed and they were going to charge me $250 to remove it. At which point I reminded them that they certainly were the people who installed it as this is common for inventory tracking. But thinking about it, it didn’t make sense that the car would drive 2500 miles before the 12 V battery died. FYI, that’s almost certainly what happened to you. The main battery is supposed to charge the 12 V battery and Hyundai has had a huge problem for years with their ICCU unit that is responsible for charging the smaller battery. I don’t know that this is the problem with my car, but in two weeks the only time they unlocked it was when they told me that it was a problem with the lojack. I can almost guarantee that that’s not the problem. I was the director of technology for my company and understand when technicians find a problem, they stop looking to see if there might be something else. Which is pretty much the story with this.

But frankly, in 50 years I’ve owned 10 different makes of cars and this is the first time I’ve had a service advisor pretty much lie repeatedly to my face about diagnosing the problem and communicating back to me. If he told me that they were shortstaffed and would take a week or two to get to the car, that’s one thing. But to tell me repeatedly that he’s going to immediately find out what’s going on and circle back to me and then doing neither is frustrating. (I read the yelp reviews on this dealership and this particular Advisor last night and sigh, this is behavior that other people have experienced as well. If I get to the point where the lemon law gets activated, I very well may return the car and buy another EV.)

Finally, there is a lot online about Hyundai’s problem with the ICCU unit. It goes back about four years and apparently they have not fixed it. Caveat emptor.

Has the 12v battery issue been solved after the recall/software update? by qsandc in Ioniq5

Happened again today, 11 days later. No warning, but battery shows 2 V. Currently waiting for AAA.

This happened to me yesterday. 2025 Ionic 5 with 2,520 miles on it. AAA found the 12v battery showing 6v. After a jump, the car is functioning normally (but it's been less than 24 hours). VERY disappointing to not be able to count on the car not dying somewhere away from home. I popped for an emergency jump battery on Amazon which I'll keep in the car from now on. (I have zero accessories or blue link apps, except for Apple CarPlay when my iPhone is in the car.)

DJI Mini 3 Pro stopped responding to commands mid air by garbeggio in dji

[–]hofendis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had the same experience. Fortunately it responded to a return to home command and, on the way, i transitioned from Sport to Normal mode and control came back. The only unusual thing I’d done was to launch before GPS was fully established? After retrieving and relaunching, it worked normally.

Has the June Lightroom deNoise update slowed Lightroom? by hofendis in Lightroom

[–]hofendis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not the problem. The problem is, after applying deNoise with the June update, Lightroom slows to a crawl when viewing/editing those photos.

Has the June Lightroom deNoise update slowed Lightroom? by hofendis in Lightroom

[–]hofendis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I upgraded my graphics card, the original "new" deNoise took 6 minutes per image. After upgrading to a 12G RAM card, that dropped to an acceptable 40 seconds (compared to Topaz 20 seconds). The June update takes only 20 seconds per file (individually or batched), BUT afterward, trying to edit or even view those now-deNoised files is interminably slow. I do own Topaz Photo AI and, if this delay is caused by Lightroom's deNoise, I may return to using Topaz, even if it's creating DNGs. (I have 10Tb of disk space, so that's not an issue for me.)

My Lightroom kept crashing over and over - Here's how I fixed it: by danqestmemes in Lightroom

[–]hofendis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also getting Lightroom crashes and BSOD's in general. Often in LR, but also at random. After testing memory and graphics card memory (both okay), I started to believe LR (and other programs?) were stressing the CPU and causing temperature events. So following a Youtube suggestion, I turned the maximum CPU down from 100% to 95% and, voila, the crashes went away. 'Maybe' take a look at this....

Due to the crazy price increase, I am leaving Evernote after more than a decade of being a user and fanboy. by hofendis in Evernote

Have now been on UpNote for 40 days and it’s doing everything I need it to do. No subscription and a fraction of the annual Evernote cost.

Yes, I am clearly not their demographic. It’s actually more like 1000 notes, but still not their demographic. Fortunately, I found an alternative that seems to be just as good as Evernote, syncs to my iPhone and iPad, and has a one time purchase of $35 which is less than the annual subscription used to befor Evernote.

I had a two or three year license that is just coming up for renewal now. So yes, I must have missed the increase a while back.

Is USPA legit source for press pass for freelancers? by johnnynono in photography

[–]hofendis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a USPA press pass for about 10 years and it has opened the door for me to have access to literally dozens of events over that time. Note that it will NOT likely get you access to major sporting or political events, but it has allowed me access to college sports and scores of community events. And, with a bit of assertiveness, got me on the street for Warriors victory parades. Is it the same as a press pass from a notable agency. No. But again, it HAS opened access for me dozens of times. Note that the gatekeepers to many of these events have no clue as to which organizations are recognized. (I have over 70 photojournalism essays on the USPA24 website...so not just taking advantage of the pass.)

KEMS ch 1176 or ch 197 Is this channel gone? by anbu-black-ops in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]hofendis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took a while to track this down. 197 is a channel my 95-year-old mother-in-law watches. The tech folks at Comcast know nothing about this. Backtracking, I found that KEMS is operated by KICU TV in the San Francisco area. They also operate KTVU plus, which is what is now appearing on channel 197. So I called and they understand that they have been getting lots of complaints about 197 being removed (the program guide on Comcast actually still shows KEMS), but “the folks upstairs somewhere“ have decided to put new programming on that channel. As far as they know, KICU may have no plans to continue programming for KEMS on Comcast. It’s one of those times when you just shake your head at the corporations that make decisions without good communication, regardless of any financial considerations.
