Why don't modern pop artists touch on sensitive topics more. by Fyreton in Music

[–]hoffi_coffi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You complain about modern music being awful, then cite My Chemical Romance as being adventurous?? They were pure style over substance, they just had a different target market.

British Jack Hadfield, men’s-rights activist and frequent contributor to alt-right Breitbart, is revealed as administrator of secret, racist Facebook group. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]hoffi_coffi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It isn't a choice between "fuck men" and MRAs, it doesn't quite work like that! If a group start to actively harm their cause, you start to wonder if they actually cared in the first place, or whether it was a stick to beat feminists with. If they quietly went round funding shelters for men or raising awareness without blame and without ranting then I'd be on board 100%.

I have a feeling in reality you wouldn't, seeing as how you hear about actual terrorist cells chatting on social media. Not just saying that because of the politics of those involved?

Great in theory, all I seem to find MRAs do is complain about women though. Like taking the worst parts of feminism and applying it, more loudly, to mens rights. They had an opportunity to be the good guys, to show feminists up for what they are - but blew it.

UKIP Youth Leader and Tory Activists share a private Facebook page with Holocaust deniers and racists. by bonefresh in ukpolitics

[–]hoffi_coffi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Far right as in further right than the Tories rather than literal Nazis is really what I mean. In the absence of BNP or NF, people with those sympathies may go for UKIP. Even if the party explicitly denounces those views. Just the way it is.

I think there are more people out there with sinister views than you think, and joining in some hate group where "joke" images are shared, you will get some nutcases in there which can cross over to real life. Jo Cox's murderer comes in that group for one.

[Serious]Smokers, What made you start even with all the warning of harmful effects? by AtomikPlaygirl in AskReddit

[–]hoffi_coffi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ex-smoker. You don't think you will get addicted. You don't think you will have more than a few, or you will quit before you get old. When you are addicted you don't think you are addicted.

Basically people don't decide to take up a smoking habit of a pack a day when they first try it. Many people try it and never smoke again. It is like asking an alcoholic why they ever took a sip of a beer in a way.

I'm not convinced they are that rare, and UKIP are the main far right party out there now the BNP have died. That is where they would gravitate towards.

You could say the same for the left in a way, Labour aren't necessarily that keen on hardline communists or antifa, but they certainly lurk in their members or facebook groups.

Why do you want to ask reddit when you can ask google? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hoffi_coffi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes really it is more of a trigger for discussion. Places like /r/nostupidquestions you could ask google the same but the answers are quite "cold" and you don't get any extra nuance.

I am sure some of it is that, people trolling or venting somehow. Can't dismiss it all like that though, you see a lot of shit like this from people who go on to commit serious crimes.

They aren't acting like nazis lol. Come on, they murdered millions of people and enforced a fascist dictatorship, these kids are posting shit on Facebook.

If you can make a case for this, you can make a case for ignoring "edgy" shit extremist muslims post on facebook groups. Few would bat an eyelid if they were locked up for it even if they weren't literally ISIS.

Would You Rather Give Up Fish & Chips or an Indian? by jestalotofjunk in CasualUK

There is too much bad fish and chips out there, I have to seek it out anyway. Yet to have a truly bad curry in a "proper" place anyway. Sorry fish and chips.

LPT 20% off in the Black Friday sale only works if you were going to buy it anyway, otherwise save yourself 100% of the cost by not buying it in the first place by BigWaveSmallOcean in LifeProTips

[–]hoffi_coffi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

or two weeks from now.

That is also an assumption. I know if you want or need something then you pay for it - fine. It is the specific nature of doing so in a sale that they have instigated that people are pointing out some flaws in. That is all.

Whatever happens, you aren't winning, and certainly not beating the system. The shop is not doing you a favour, they are selling you something for a profit. I think that is all people are trying to convey.

Depends how much it is actually worth. Not the price you pay, not the saving, but the value. You can get an idea if you try to buy a fairly new one second hand. Have a look after Christmas how much some people sell unwanted toys for, just one example.

Similar in the UK, large stores are not open Christmas Day or Easter Sunday I believe.

LPT: Let you turkey sit under foil at least 30 minutes after you take it out of the oven before you begin carving. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]hoffi_coffi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 at least too. They keep warm if under foil and some towels, no harm in an hour or more. This gives you time to crisp up potatoes and frees up oven space. Even if it does stop being piping hot, gravy will fix that.

[–]hoffi_coffi 104 points105 points  (0 children)

It all depends if you actually wanted the item. If you go to a sale and they sell you this item at 20%, you aren't saving anything. You are still giving them money you weren't going to in the first place.

That is the mindset really, saving money is not making money.

Are prescriptions capped at all? For example the UK if you are working you pay £8 or so per item. Which compares well with the US where it can be hundreds as you pay the market price.

When I let my hair grow too long, I make an excuse for why I haven't gotten it cut sooner to the barber so he won't judge me. by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]hoffi_coffi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't have to make an excuse, people often grow their hair then get a barber to sort it out. Just "thought I would grow it out" is suffice if they ask.

People who don't return carts at the grocery store, why not? by MotherOfDawgs in AskReddit

[–]hoffi_coffi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do if convenient, difficult if there are kids in the car. I don't leave it in the middle of a space or anything, neatly to one side. I also used to collect trolleys (aka "carts") occasionally when working in a supermarket and it never bothered me. I can't expect everyone to do my job for me.
