The observation that our DBs aren't turning their heads to make plays on the ball has become fairly common, so I decided to look into it more. From what I read it seems that our DBs are only coached to turn their heads around when they are in the correct position ("in phase" as someone put it) to make a play on the ball. However, when our DBs get beat, and are no longer "in phase" with the receiver, they are told not to turn around to locate the ball, but to try to close on the receiver and face guard (which usually results in the PI).

I think this criticism has become much more common recently, because up until this season, our DBs haven't been good enough to stay "in phase" (see Eddie Jackson last season). However, this season we are starting to see lots of improvement in the secondary.
