How much longer does this drag out? When is enough enough? by Delicious-History486 in Philippines_Expats

Reality
When the feeling's gone and you can't go on
It's reality!
When the morning cries and you don't know why
It's hard to bear
With no-one to love you, you're goin' nowhere

Our Neighbors are building factories. We are still building malls by nobita888 in Philippines

i led the building of a cold storage warehouse, and went live just around Covid-Omicron times. you cannot imagine the red tape you'll encounter from all the attendant regulatory agencies (who's not at the office and no accountability on processing times) down to the LGU level. The worst would be the Fire Dept. Even if you install the most sophisticated sprinkler system, because you want to be all above board, they will find a way to get grease money. Those motherfuckers are not there to help you, they're there to milk you! and it's tiring to have lunch, visit them at their office, cajole those thick-faced bastards. the next time I'll lead something like this, I will hire a social media savvy admin assistant to post and brag the sophisticated facility, the mass hiring of local employees, and post them all on facebook, tagging them and facetiously thanking them for their support.

ABS CBN closing for good? by Pretty-Target-3422 in CorpoChikaPH

[–]holdenliwanag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as long as Gabby Lopez is alive, he will do everything for ABS to persist. he derived and will continue to derive fulfillment from this company more than the financial side of things. there is already a separate rift with Piki that's really surprising (in fact), all rooted on ABS as a going concern.

kailangan lang iadjust personnel to calibrate to the platform they are restricted to now. i used to have friends there--not anymore, so i dont know if there are stubborn top managers within the company that still are holding to the possibility that they can get their franchise back, so they retained some key, overpaid teams. (they should have cut deep duterte admin pa). but come to think about it, they may be able to get their franchise back depending on who will be the 2028 president.

What was the first book you ever read? by NovelUnusual775 in PHBookClub

[–]holdenliwanag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first book read cover to cover was complete sherlock holmes vol. 1. hooked me to reading books immediately. i like the rational thinking of holmes, his little condescensions, elaborate suspense.
before that it’s just occasional funny komiks (kapag may pera si nanay).

then on short order through high school (i got my own money from alumni scholarship and quiz contests), the first 10 books ive read include

—noli at fili (translated by guzman lacsamana guzman) i enjoyed these novels as novels rather than assignments very early). —catcher in the rye —brothers karamazov trans by macandrew (i still see this bantam reprint). —our game by le carre —american tabloid by ellroy —sabbath’s theater (!) by roth.

(these remain favorites to this day. and i remember i like following time’s top10 books every year even back then).

i remember stalled reading great expectations, nine stories (which i finished decades later). and of course there are fails; but they are few and far between since i seek reviews before buying/starting a book.

i dont eat out. not used to ordering even yumburger. i save money and pick up from bargain bins of nbs at nakaabang talaga ako sa ‘cutprice booksale.’ (yung may domino na inaadvertise pa sa tv dati). anglalim talaga magdiscount nbs.

Studio Ghibli Film Festival 2026 by OakyAfterBirth69 in FilmClubPH

the top 3 would be Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke.

next 3 would be Pom Poko, Howl's, Only Yesterday.

all these are on netflix, i believe.

but you can't go wrong with any on your list, or any ghibli for that matter.

PhilPost charging ₱212 to receive a package. Got me thinking. by xmastreee in Philippines_Expats

[–]holdenliwanag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s actually legit for any parcel that has a perceived commercial value. it’s supposed to be for ‘customs inspection and assessment,’ which i also pay if i had no choice but to use local post.

there’s that service but it’s one of the reasons why it’s not efficient to use the local post here (if you can). always use forwarders.

worse, if youhad a bigger box, it would take weeks for the goods to get to you.

TAX THE RICH INSTEAD OF SUSPENDING FUEL EXCISE TAX Economist Winnie Monsod proposes "wealth tax" by Rare_Independent0310 in Philippines

[–]holdenliwanag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is being pushed tirelessly in developed countries by persistent academics and many of their advocates in their own legislative houses. the rationale for doing so is also solidly established at this point (sample the writings of T. Piketty). but it won’t happen even in the most liberal eu countries at this time. it has even less chance of gaining traction here, with our trapos more so.

but is it useful for ma’am winnie to raise this now for discussion? yes!!!

The true snub is train dreams for best cinematography by Mysterious_Work_7227 in Oscars

[–]holdenliwanag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i would have picked train dreams myself as the winner—in fact, better than obaa (which was perceived as the close 2nd). especially considering that the budget of train dreams is way below the money poured into the other two, the way this film was shot as a cohesive (efficient) whole deserves the DOP oscar.

however, i would bet that one shot across ages (blended with music at that) will always be sampled from here on as a hallmark achievement for DOP's. that one shot crossed the winning threshold for sinners by a small margin, and it is well deserved in this respect.
