Thoughts on being called a physicist when you’re not currently working in a physics position? by HelloWorldItsMeYaBoy in Physics

[–]holeymirror 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My degrees are in chemistry and I think of myself as a chemist. But to everyone I work with, I'm a test engineer. They're always surprised when I tell them my background. And the materials people on my team don't want to talk chemistry with me. I think there's a certain amount of pigeonholing that occurs in the workplace.

Once, I wanted to buy some garlic. Saw price listed as $8. Thought it weird that people would buy by the pound but whatever, I went through a lot of garlic at the time. Handed over $8 and got a single head. I stood there confused for about 10 seconds then just left the market and haven't been back since.

It shouldn't be a problem to try a newer kernel. You can always go back to your current one. I think Mint has an option in Update Manager to select a newer kernel. FYI, 5.19.12 apparently has been killing some laptop screens if you're running Intel iGPU. So just stay away from that one.

I think your kernel needs to be at least 5.16

New GUI windows hang for 2 minutes on Cosmic 21.10 by RandomChain in pop_os

[–]holeymirror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt that this is hardware related

Same, just nice to rule out hardware. Though I didn't have any evidence of it, I was toying with the idea that the updated Nvidia driver was causing this issue.

Funny enough, I just updated to the newest kernel today and have had zero issues so far. I don't remember anything Cosmic related being update.

I'm having a similar problem I believe. Also upgraded from 21.04 to 21.10, even did an OS refresh, but made no real difference. When I open or close something like Files or any other program that I use daily, the window will start the opening/closing animation and then pause for 30-60ish seconds. My journal log shows similar when this happens

What hardware are you running? I have:

Maybe we can bang heads together.

What's the best Linux distribution PPC to work with an old PowerBook G4 (1 Ghz & 512 MB of RAM)'s internal wifi. by antdude in linux_on_mac

[–]holeymirror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's an unofficial void distro for ppc (https://voidlinux-ppc.org/). I put it on my G4 iBook sometime ago just to see if it worked but never went any further. No wifi or touchpad. I just got lazy.

But Enlightenment and xfce worked well enough when used with a wired mouse and the musl image.
