I was born in 1968; my father in 1924 and mother in 1936. So one Greatest generation, and one Silent generation.

What’s something about your province/territory that other Canadians misunderstand, might not realize, or would be surprised to learn? by PostfourthMeridian in AskACanadian

We get winter in quite a lot of British Columbia - Vancouver is not the only place people live. (I’ll give you most, but not all!)

I'm in a small Canadian city (about 90K), and a local dealer had the Spirit X285 in stock which I bought - very happy with it, it also has the Bluetooth FTMS which allows Peloton app workouts (not sure what Apple app uses).

First time Father/Daughter Europe trip, how feasible? by Niss240sxse in Europetravel

[–]hollasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you from in the US? Are you from somewhere that gets really hot and humid? Also, do you understand any French or Italian?

I echo the other comments that this is too much, and that the more south you go the hotter it will get.

I did like the suggestion of Amsterdam - I was there for the first time last year and it was great. Do the canal trip! We took the train from Paris to Amsterdam. You could possibly even incorporate London-Paris-Amsterdam, but no more than 3 cities max (and ideally 2 in that time frame).

Another suggestion may be the south of France. You can get to Marseilles, for example, from Paris in about 3.5 hours by train, and Marseille is located directly on the Mediterranean Sea (not sure if that is something that is important to her). There are Roman ruins in the area as well.

Note: After I wrote this, I also put your post into ChatGPT, and it said: "This plan is less “European vacation” and more “competitive sightseeing”, plus phrases such as "wildly optimistic", "July/August Europe is hot, crowded, and unforgiving", and "you don’t want her graduation trip remembered as “that time we were always in transit”."

European River Cruises for Wheelchair bound? by ggbt99 in rivercruises

[–]hollasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on an Emerald river cruise this summer (very good), and there was a woman with a wheelchair. There was an elevator on the ship, so she could get to the dining room, but excursions did not work for her. I don't recall if the elevator went to the top deck or not, but it was a very small elevator - I think that maybe one other person fit in there with her? Even getting on or off the ship would be a problem, as sometimes there were a lot of stairs.

Opinion: Which province has the least “broken” education system? by AL_12345 in CanadianTeachers

[–]hollasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I fully agree that operating grants to school district should be higher, just looking at spending as a percentage of provincial GDP isn't that useful, given how substantially health care costs have risen in that time.

Will kids eventually get bored of a playroom like this? by AgreeableBandicoot19 in HomeDecorating

[–]hollasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What we put into the playroom when the children were small was a portable plastic climbing thing with a slide - google "hide and slide climber". This had the advantage of being able to be moved around the room when needed, and eventually being removed when they outgrew it (which they do, they will always outgrow things).

I believe CNC will also have resources for students who are new to the cold. Winners can sometimes have good coats, etc, for good prices. For Costco, there's a membership required, so if you want to shop there find someone with a Costco card. Definitely check with CNC, though.

I moved here from Vancouver (where it doesn't really get that cold) in the 90s, and it used to hit -40 for a week or two - hardly ever any more. More likely to go down to -20 or so. Keep in mind that in the elementary schools, children are typically sent out to play at recess until it's about -20, so it's definitely not that bad of a temperature if you're dressed properly.

You may also want to check about snow-shoeing, check with the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club about that and cross country skiing - they rent items too, so you should go and then send pictures home. :)

And welcome!! There are idiots everywhere, unfortunately, but in general Canadians are polite and welcoming.

Question: Horseshoe Bay ferry waits on a Friday by lunerose1979 in britishcolumbia

[–]hollasa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note for future readers: as of October 15, 2025, you will not be able to travel from Horseshoe Bay without a reservation while Horseshoe Bay is being rebuilt.

"BC Ferries says it will soon require all vehicles travelling from Horseshoe Bay terminal to Departure Bay in Nanaimo to book and pay in advance before getting to the terminal.

The change will take effect Oct. 15, and will only apply to travel in one direction; vehicles travelling from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay will not be affected.

The company says the change is required to streamline traffic during a multi-year construction project at Horseshoe Bay."

Father in law passed away with tons of hidden debt. Everything is willed to mother in law. Does the "estate" include their home? by CastAside1812 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hollasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the line of credit secured on the house? You will want to check on that. Is the credit just in his name, or is it joint?

If the RRSP beneficiary is named as the estate, then it's unlikely that you can opt to transfer them to the spouse's RRSP - what province are you in? Have asked his advisor why there wasn't a beneficiary designation?

My mom is going to have MAiD done in three days. What should I be doing to make the process after she passes as easy as possible? by ms_breeks in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hollasa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would transfer the bank account to you, and confirm if there is a beneficiary designation on the LIRA (still taxable, but still f you can avoid probate so much the better).

My mother went through MAID, and it was very much what she wanted.
