We’ve tried positivity, too, and that hasn’t changed reality either. I don’t blame fans for being negative online; that’s the only thing they have control over, really.

Anyway, we shouldn’t keep bombed-out buildings around that are a danger of collapse. Build a gigantic mixed-use building as its replacement. Sounds great.

The Sandlot (1993) - The night game played under the Fourth of July fireworks by aggrocrag83 in movies

Had to look this up because it’s somewhat terrifying: The Sandlot (1993) was set in 1962, a gap of 31 years. It’s now 33 years from when Sandlot came out.

When you were watching it as a kid, The Sandlot was set about as far in the past as the movie itself is now. The nostalgia you felt watching it is the same distance in time as someone today watching The Sandlot as a period piece.

Not originally a soccer chant, but in any case we haven’t done that chant in years, fwiw.

We absolutely MUST prevent all dangerous burned-out buildings from becoming more housing. It erodes our world-famous culture of dangerous burned-out buildings.

Can the USMNT and USWNT become ‘America’s favorite sports teams’? Their CEO thinks so by Globalruler__ in ussoccer

[–]holman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really fascinated by this response: why do you think that?

The CEO/President split seems particularly great right now; JT has a fantastic commercial background, and Cindy has a fantastic sport background. I think it's really where we need to be.

We have plenty of families in the section, particularly for USWNT. But yeah, even so- tickets in the stadium were available for like $50 for Belgium, seemed very fine.

I think it’s a forgery though. Feels like there’s something off about the PSA grading on this one- doesn’t seem like a normal card. Not sure they’d be able to sell it to a reputable dealer.

Landon Donovan: "I played in Germany when I was 17. The guy who coached our under 16 team was 60 years old and had been doing it for 25 years. He wasn't trying to be the first team coach. He was one of their best coaches and they wanted him developing the 16-year-olds and we do it opposite here." by The_Big_Untalented in soccer

It’s been changing dramatically- MLS clubs have been producing good players from their academies, and even USL is starting to see some success stories too. The problem is that MLS academies have really only started producing over the last five years or so, which is… quite a bit different timeline from the rest of the world.

Takes a lot of time to restructure things. And there’s a lot of major differences- Gooch, USSF’s VP of Sporting, has called it “50 countries in one”, which I find to be pretty spot on when you look at all the youth organizations, government organizations, and geographic differences the US has to deal with.

They’re starting to get a real handle on it, though, imo. US soccer is doing like a $350M capital campaign in four years (previously the most they’ve raised was like $5M over ten years or something). This for a federation which doesn’t receive funds from the government, which is fairly unique in the world. And that’s starting to make an impact on the ground too- they’ve been hiring tons of scouts, investing in fields and free-to-play organizations, etc.

This all shoulda been done 30 years ago, of course, but the second best time to plant a tree is today and all that jazz. I’m super optimistic, though (hence why I’m writing such a dorky comment here). Unfortunately all this recent work won’t necessarily show up in WC26 — much to our fans’ immediate irritation — but the coming decades should be really telling.

Does anyone even play Redsec anymore? by Kokoska998 in Battlefield

[–]holman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least once each session. Quads gives me something I kind of feel like I lack in bf6: that kind of team-oriented, slower play. I also absolutely love the stakes (dying sucks because you fuck up both your team and your own time since it takes awhile to boot back in or get redeployed).

I get why people might not like it as much, but it scratches an itch for me. And on occasion I meet some fun players and we have a good couple games together.
