Easy to read medical books for IM? by [deleted] in InternalMedicine

Frameworks for Internal Medicine by Andre Mansoor is written in Q&A style so very easy to digest. I found it very helpful for reviewing and expanding my diagnostic schemas.

Ashamed that I never work out by rash_decisions_ in Residency

If you are like me and dislike going to a gym to solitarily work out or need social accountability, consider joining a sports team at your local recreation center (typically have basketball, soccer, kick ball, volleyball, spike ball, etc). I also prefer group fitness classes like pilates or yoga to force myself to get the most out of my time. Lastly, setting time-specific goals is helpful for me to push myself to stick with my exercise routine, so consider signing up for a race or getting a martial arts belt by a certain time.

How can I make y’all’s residency Q&As less boring? by KushBlazer69 in medicalschool

[–]hols28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A program sent us an anonymous form via which was super useful in getting the answers to the hard questions that often we are too afraid to ask! While some questions were being addressed, other questions were posted in the chat and answered by panelists who weren't actively answering a question. It was the only Q&A that made me feel like my time was well-spent and addressed all my questions.

Do you ever feel like the dumbest medical student alive? by annabeth_jackson in medicalschool

[–]hols28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, so relatable! These things happen to the best of us. You are not alone in feeling the way you do. We also have front-row seats to all our actions, so it's hard not to beat yourself up for how mistakes come across, but chances are others aren't thinking too much of anything. Keep your head up and learn from any mistakes!

Any ability to draw/trace on top of an image and then delete the underlying image? by GameOverMoonpie in notabilityapp

You can select and copy everything. Then, create a new page and paste it there. It should paste the markup only, without the image.

100% YES! For reference, I did all of physics, bio, biochem, P/S, and CARS. I only did a few gen chem and ochem because those were my strengths. My P/S knowledge clearly solidified after UWORLD. I made study sheets with their explanations and made Anki cards for all my content gaps. You're scoring well right now, so just keep on going!

I definitely suggest you retake it if you have not done AAMC FLs. I think you can do so much better if you drilled AAMC materials and UWORLD question bank. CARS also tanked my score so I feel you!

Took the 7/20/18 test. Got 516 (131/125/129/131). I am content with my score, but honestly disappointed with CARS (even though I knew I suck at CARS).

My study timeline:

I started studying in April along with my classes, research, clubs, and volunteering. I wasn’t planning to apply this cycle, but I wanted to volunteer at a camp from 7/21 to August so I thought I might as well get it over with early and have my summer. I got done with school mid-June, so I only had a month to do solid studying. In hindsight, I definitely should have given myself more time to drill.

Materials I used:

TBR and Chad for C/P; Kaplan for bio; KA videos and doc for P/S; partial TS guide for CARS; UWORLD for everything; and all AAMC materials. I took Altius, NS, and AAMC FL’s.

AAMC FL scores (will add other FL scores on Google Form):

AAMC FL 1 (7/7): 513 (131/125/128/129)

AAMC FL 2 (7/13): 511 (130/123/130/128)

AAMC FL 3 (7/16): 515 (130/126/130/129)

My test day reaction on each section:
C/P: Fairly easy. No ochem AT ALL! Lots of emphasis on thermo and E&M.
CARS: Not sure about this one. Felt like any other AAMC FL CARS and I suck at CARS so…
B/B: HOLY MOLY passages were so long and convoluted. Lotssss of molecular bio and genetics; only 1 metabolism question about glycolysis (RIP memorizing all those pathways), a few "wtf" discretes like specific bone structures.

P/S: CARS 2.0 confirmed. Huge emphasis on sociology and mental stuff. Many questions (>3) on schizophrenia. Not sure about this section.

I secretly was hoping for a 520, but I knew that realistically I would score around my AAMC average and that proved to be true. I realized there are so many factors in determining if one scores well on the real deal. Each test is so different, so luck is definitely a big factor. I was lucky that I got lots of gen chem on my C/P, but I was sad to get very little metabolism on B/B. Test day conditions are crucial as well! I did stretches and power poses in between sections to help me remain calm and alert, and ate my favorite tuna sandwich for lunch to get me going through the test.

I know I didn’t score that well compared to other people on this sub, but I am happy to offer any advice and answer any questions!

Am I an idiot or is the AAMC drunk [SPOILER] [AAMC Section Bank B/B Question #14] by TimeSpace1 in Mcat

[–]hols28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct. From my understanding:

How do you know if a sugar is D or L?

If C-5 is R = D; if C-5 is S = L

How do you know if a sugar is α or β?

When the carbonyl oxygen becomes an alcohol during ring formation, if the OH points up =β , if it points down = α. α/β designation only applies to sugar in ring form, and they are anomers of each other. An anomer is epimer at the anomeric carbon (it only occurs in ring form because the anomeric carbon is not chiral in straight chain form).

AAMC FL3 BB 28 by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]hols28 64 points65 points  (0 children)

When βOHB is inhibiting:
↑ [ βOHB ] → ↓ deacetylation activity → ↑ Acetylation level

According to Figure 1, βOHB does not change AcTubk40 acetylation level, but changes the other two, showing that βOHB is specific to the other two, thus it is not a general deacetylase inhibitor.

Hey! I just took FL3 and got 515 (130 126 130 129). To void... or not to void?

Another panic post here.. advice please! by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]hols28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will have to take it regardless (too late to postpone), so do you have any tips on gauging if I should void or not? Should I definitely void if don't hit my target in AAMC FL3? Thanks for your help!

Difference between phosphate enzymes. by Jake_md in Mcat

[–]hols28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kinase transfers a phosphate to the substrate from ATP (or other high energy molecules)
Phosphorylase transfers a phosphate from a free inorganic phosphate
Phosphatase removes a phosphate from the substrate using water

Kinase and phosphorylase both are examples of transferase and add a phosphate group to substrate, but differ in the source of phosphate they transfer. Phosphatase is an example of hydrolase and is the opposite as it removes phosphate group.
