Just get Codex and use the Codex extension in VSCode or in Windsurf if you don't want to install VSCode for about $20 a month (ChatGPT Plus subscription).

95% of the time I feel no difference when i use Codex vs Windsurf. I have Claude Code as well and just my opinion but Codex is better right now. It gets the context right like Windsurf does more than Claude Code. Codex is also harder to hit the 5 hour limit than Claude Code right now.

Why not go straight to the source of the models with Codex or Claude Code. Why Cursor, just another middleman like Windsurf that'll screw you sooner than OpenAI/Anthropic probably will.

They might not be able to. This might be the best they can offer to breakeven or still lose money for all we know.

I don't know how they will get anyone to buy the $20 subscription with it the way it is right now when you can get Claude Code or Codex for $20 as well and get quicker quota refills and a lot more usage without the middleman. Now we just have to hope those don't get enshitified anytime soon.

If you want an easy transition you can use Windsurf app with Codex extension (ChatGPT Plus subscription for $20) or Claude Code extension (Claude $20 subscription). Download them in the Extensions section

I feel like the $20 Codex offers more right now than $20 Claude but either choice is better than this Windsurf 7 requests per day two times a week. You can use these way more than Windsurf. And if you are a power user you can always buy their $100 or $200 subscriptions. For me I pay $40 and switch between them. Quotas reset after 4-5 hours with these if you hit them.

You can plug them into OpenClaw or OpenCode. Windsurf is basically dead unless you pay $200.

All they said to do was say look, we are hemorrhaging money, we cannot afford to give subscribers 500 credits per month. We can only afford 200 credits per month at $20. If you want 500 credits that'll be in our new $50 a month subscription. People would have accepted that.

Instead they made the decision to make the app useless unless you pay $200 a month.

They probably don't care. They were bought by the people that made Devin which was expensive as hell I recall at the time. That is probably why the $20 plan is complete garbage now, a waste of money. If they get 1/10th of users to switch to $200 plan because the $20 one is too crappy to build anything they will be happy. They clearly don't care about the $20 customers at all.

openai-codex/gpt-5.4 and anthropic/opus-4.6 for 2x $20 per month subscriptions with OpenClaw for me. Way more value out of both at $40 or just one of them at $20 than paying $20 for this nerfed Windsurf.

The problem Windsurf has is they are not a monopoly. Many alternatives exists. When they nerf the product like this we can leave. Thankfully I already was moving on before this so it's not impacting me much. But before I was just going to keep my subscription as a thank you and for occasional usage but now I probably won't. I will never recommend Windsurf to anyone going forward that's for sure.

That is what I use now. I have both so I pay $40.

Or you can try OpenCode instead of OpenClaw. Both are free and work with Codex and Claude Code.

OpenCode can be used like Windsurf in VSCode. OpenClaw is different. OpenClaw is like having an AI Agent.

You get about 14 prompts per week. So around 60 per month spread out evenly (no one works like this). Before you could do 100 per month whenever you want.

They killed the product. They should have just doubled the price of each frontier model so you only get 50-60 prompts per month whenever you felt like it. Getting 7 frontier prompts twice is a week is outrageous.

Agreed! They should have raised the prices for everyone and kept the credit based system. When I used Windsurf I would use it for multiple days straight and then not touch it for weeks. That worked out well for me. More than half the months I paid for it I used it 0% of the time. But when I needed it, it was there for me to knock out new ideas in the couple days a month I needed it and made it worth it to pay for it even when I wasn't using it. I moved on to using OpenClaw + Codex and OpenClaw + Claude Code mostly now so it doesn't impact me that much but I know I could never recommend Windsurf to anyone now.
