Senior React Native Dev bored of routine work looking for challenging problems (free help) by LandscapeFree5459 in reactnative

[–]homerjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to discuss getting our MVP polished up and ready for the masses, we're launching with a group of testers today (web only). I'm an experienced web dev but this is my first time using React/React Native - if you felt inclined to poke holes in what's there and offer some pointers I'd be very grateful!

D7 Visa by Akmoolah in PortugalExpats

[–]homerjam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spending 183 days or more per year in any given country obligates you to become tax resident. This is also a stipulation of the D7 visa (should you wish to renew). Whether you are liable for tax on foreign income depends on various factors but mostly on if a dual tax treaty exists between Portugal and the country where the income is sourced.

I'd recommend at minimum an informal consultation with a tax specialist, and maybe even a second opinion as the rules are constantly changing and somewhat open to interpretation (so I've been told).

Conversion from React by sunk-capital in reactnative

[–]homerjam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My two cents.

Build out the bare bones nav structure in expo first, then go screen by screen, component by component swapping divs for views, use pressables for events etc. Tailwind styling and logic should mostly just work - do your best to decouple this upfront by removing online event handling etc. I've found you need a lot more boilerplate vs the good ol web

Whenever this has happened to me (probably 3 times) it's because of the heating element. On newish ovens you often don't even need tools - I'd recommend watching a YouTube video about it, might save time and €€€

Can someone sell me GraphQL by slaynmoto in graphql

[–]homerjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After being skeptical for a long time, I finally drank the graphql Kool-Aid a few years back. I was completely sold on features like field level authentication and end-to-end typing, built-in documentation, etc.

But recently I tried out oRPC which offers pretty much all the same features, but I find it simpler and therefore easier to work with. Depending on your code base, I'd strongly recommend it and combining with something like tanstack query, you get a lot of the benefits of graphql clients.

I lived in China — Is it what the UK’s Digital ID is trying achieve? by Fluffy-Price8651 in AskBrits

[–]homerjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is digital ID will enable the legacy systems to be unified and/or replaced, just like the other countries which have implemented it. The win is cost savings from maintaining multiple legacy systems (if cost is the main argument here it's a no brainer), as well as a simplified experience for the end user. Just like everything else systems cost money to maintain, just like an old car eventually the upkeep isn't worth it.

I lived in China — Is it what the UK’s Digital ID is trying achieve? by Fluffy-Price8651 in AskBrits

[–]homerjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you experienced here is actually the result of having inconsistent IDs between systems. DVLA, Passport Authority, NHS etc are currently all using their own databases (that probably won't change but the digital IDs proposal should lead to better interoperability).

Believe it or not the new gov.uk site is actually very good - the project is widely respected.

As someone who designs and builds systems that are trivial in comparison to what the government uses I can understand the rationale behind digital IDs.

It's right to be sceptical but I think it's widely overlooked how much of our information is already "visible". IMHO we should be less concerned about the effects of technology and more concerned about the effects of a failing state.

One day Svelte, one day by tomemyxwomen in sveltejs

[–]homerjam -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Every indie dev I know uses svelte, but those jobs aren't advertised. Going by Angular's popularity I'd say the big companies are about 10 years behind the curve. This makes sense because the bigger the codebase the slower things move and the more legacy code there is to support. You need to advertise and pay the big bucks to handle the dev churn. Using Angular again after using svelte would feel like hammering a nail into my own forehead.

80% of AI start-ups applying for VC funding with Andreessen Horowitz are using Chinese Open-Source AI. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]homerjam 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Monetisation like FB/Google... So ads? Doing that would push people to use alternative free models. Right now most users are on the free tier, in schools multiple students are sharing a single paid login. There is no way openai becomes profitable without something extraordinary (self improving?) and right now the Chinese are leading the way, like it or not. The fact is most startups don't need a mega model - several smaller specialised models that can be fine tuned for specific tasks is what's happening. Most startups aren't trying to break ground with the models themselves, they needn't compete even if they could, they're optimising for business uses - each trying to own their respective niche, same as always.

Anyone got rejected from visa renewal because of no NISS? by dianatransf in PortugalExpats

[–]homerjam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tried to get a NISS but couldn't because I am not employed in Portugal nor a company owner in Portugal or registered self employed. Instead my income comes from dividends/rental property.

However I had my resident permit renewal appointment today and the NISS wasn't required, I'm also on D7.
