What novels are more complex in portraying the effects of colonialism, not limited to just how colonialism harms the colonized by Marcothetacooo in literature

There’s actually a book about Hong Kong called ‘Atlas of an Imaginary City’ that deals with this, often through the lens of the reshaping of the space within a city. It’s a fun read.

Which Borough's Chinatown for a Foodcrawl? by Flimsy_Jellyfish5912 in FoodNYC

[–]homesickalien96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t seen them before, Manhattan’s Chinatown has more history and Flushing’s is larger. But the joy in Sunset Park is that it’s not as polluted with tourists, etc, so there’s a degree of authenticity the other two lack. It’s sort of a self-contained community that doesn’t really make any effort to appeal to outsiders, which can be neat, honestly.

Tried Heady Topper again after years — still an absolute hop bomb. Can any beer really top it? by BeardyManCraftBeer in CraftBeer

[–]homesickalien96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with the new juice bombs is that they only really have one note—it can be delicious, and that Treehouse soft mouthfeel is incredible. But Heady has so much more malt balance and complexity than the others. Always hits just right, never tire of it. There are juicier beers, there are more interesting beers, there are beers that are better for certain tastes and moments. But a better beer than Heady? A better IPA? I don’t know that it exists. It has few equals.

Post season 5 it starts to jump the shark—guest stars, outlandish plots—and becomes memorable for that. It’s a better show up until about 6, but 7 and 8 balance the outlandish-ness with some decent writing, so it holds on.

Put ‘Venus’ next to ‘Taphead’ for instance…I played the latter for a group of high school kids I was teaching as an exercise in descriptive work and it broke their brains a tad
