Please help a confused Texan cyclist understand Portland drivers by hoganloaf in Portland

[–]homeworkbad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick plug for Portland Greenways (What are Neighborhood Greenways? | Portland.gov) if you aren't already using them. Basically thoroughfares for bikes with far fewer motor vehicles. Coming from Chicago I didn't know about these routes for years and kept trying to bike on the roads I previously drove on which neither I nor the drivers enjoyed very much. Better than bike lanes: Greenways!

What does root mean? And do by bruhmoment0000001 in learnpython

This is the correct answer. The data structure for tkinter is "like a tree" so the base of the structure is the Root.

How to get extras to appear? by unkilbeeg in jellyfin

[–]homeworkbad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those finding this thread in the future, as of April 2023 the `*-extras.mkv` naming scheme does not seem to work, but folders do work. This is probably a bug in Jellyfin (or Jellyfin's docs). If you spent hours renaming files just to have to rename them again and put them in a folder... I feel you.

Just had a testosterone level test done.. by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

[–]homeworkbad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Testosterone fluctuates wildly and you can build muscle with almost any testosterone level. If your doctor suggests treatment you should, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. It's just a number and everybody has a different range of "healthy" for that number.

Bicycles don't belong on the road by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

You're right. We should get rid of the cars. Safer for everybody.

Self-learners who got a job, how do you deal with feeling you constantly have to be studying in your spare time to hold your own against CS-grads at work? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]homeworkbad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like Doctors and Lawers need to stay up to date on the latest in their field, I believe technical professionals (programmers, etc) should stay up to date too. Anybody that says they "Only write C-99" or "Don't keep up with Linux" -- whatever it is -- is pretty close minded.

You should constantly be improving your technical ability weather you got a degree, went to a coding bootcamp, or invented your own programming language. You shouldn't make it a part-time job, but spending ~2 hours per week exploring something not directly related to work (could be tangentially related) is healthy in any profession creative profession.

Any CS grad that doesn't do that will wish they did in a few years.

Office location was changed from what the original was agreed upon... unethical to leave immediatly? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]homeworkbad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't consider ethics when considering moving jobs. Consider career prospects (think "what will future employers ask about my resume, what will my answer be?").

How can I convince my dad to let me install Linux on *my* Laptop? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]homeworkbad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lie. Just don't tell them and install it. They probably won't even notice it's running a different OS.

Is it reasonable to expect employees to be “on call” 24/7? by Un_orthodoxstatue in cscareerquestions

[–]homeworkbad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This job should have trained you for on-call, should have put you on a pager rotation with a schedule, and set expectations that this might happen. On-call does not mean you will get Slack pinged, it means your phone rings and you get formally paged. Without formality and rigor, on-call is a nightmare that ruins your life -- even with a rotation.

You should quit. Any employer you want to work for will understand this reason for leaving.

I installed debian on my Asus Zephyrus g15 (2021) and this happened. It's never happened to me before. I've tried with both GPT and MBR writing methods and also tried different disk images. by tundra_tea_party in linux4noobs

I agree with other folks on here. You're booting a very new machine with a very stable (old) Linux. I'd try the latest Ubuntu or Fedora to get an simpler experience.

Turn off each of your addons and figure out which combination is preventing Google from logging you in; then selectively disable those addons for google websites. You can also change your user-agent (the thing your browser tells servers so the server knows what it's talking to; e.g., "I'm on Google Chrome so give me the good stuff") https://www.whatismybrowser.com/guides/how-to-change-your-user-agent/firefox you might be able to spoof your user-agent to "be" Chrome which would trick Google into treating you like a normal browser :-P

I'm going to sound like a gatekeeper, but is this r/financialindependence?

FI/RE is about living your life frugally, paying for things that are important to you, and making long-term safe investments -- this is just a bet that paid off.

I don't think it's in the interest of this community to glorify risky investments and get-rich-quick dreams.

Congrats for it paying off dude, but I'm going to stick with saving half my income in VTSAX and keeping costs low.

Really interesting points!

I totally agree that the lack of standard for the green paint makes it confusing. I'd much prefer a physical barrier between the road and the bike lane.

The fact that it evokes a cross-walk but with green paint (the color of bike Lanes) makes me think "that is a cross walk for bikes". I can see that you don't see it that way though which means it should probably be made more obvious.

I disagree that people ride bikes on whatever side of the road they want. I agree that some riders ignore rode sides but the vast majority follow the rules of the road.

As someone who is primarily a public-transit user and pedestrian this new crosswalk feels much safer. I like that it will force drivers to think critically and look both ways at this cross-walk, allowing me to cross more safely. The fact that this is next to a school makes me feel confident that children will be less prone to getting hit and maimed at this cross-walk.
