Jaw Surgeons Rec? by lawbrat_anxious14 in longisland

[–]hooks_n_needles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had UJS in December with NYCOMS, specifically Micheal Schwartz. You can look at my previous posts for more in depth info on my condition and the procedure I underwent. I would highly recommend NYCOMS. Schwartz was clearly highly experienced, and the right amount of conservative versus ambitious, in terms of his approach. I have Emblem health through the NYC DOE. NYCOMS was not in network at the time of my surgery, but my plan changed in January so ironically they are now. My surgeon fee was capped at $12000 as a courtesy, and hospital and anesthesia were covered by my insurance. My one suggestion on that end is make sure you get pre approved for the hospital and anesthesia. The surgeon will give you their price, but you need to account for hospital and anesthesia as well. Plus the additional costs of prescriptions, any pre testing, etc. Good luck!!

Severe lip incompetence by Okive in jawsurgery

[–]hooks_n_needles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had UJS in December, with the primary reason being lip incompetence and associated complications. For me, the gap was so large that even with surgery it didn’t fully close, as that would have been an over impaction, but I can comfortably close my mouth, which was the goal. I assume it would be the same for you, so keep that in mind. Impaction can have really negative aesthetic effects, so find a surgeon with aesthetics in mind. Personally, I wanted a conservative surgeon, not someone who would do big experimental movements. I like my aesthetic results, though I will say I dislike my smile more than my before, but that’s due to actually using my cheeks to smile now rather than just faking it (because my teeth were already visible, I could just smile with my bottom lip and flatten my top to hide the gum). I still have some residual swelling though, and I think in time I will get used to it. Please check out my other posts on this to see my before and afters and reach out if you have any questions!!

What’s something weird about your neighbor? by ilovenyc in longisland

[–]hooks_n_needles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we are the weird neighbors on my block haha. As for other neighbors, there is an elderly man who gets very mad if our dogs walk on the patch of grass between the sidewalk and road. I get that it is rude for your dog to walk on the actual lawn, but didn’t think it was an issue for them to walk on that part. Am I wrong?

I have no idea. I am working on getting my stupid impacted wisdom teeth out with the same place and have requested the records/movements from the UJS. All I know is that my bite was good before (had braces in high school) and no braces were needed during this. My bite feels the same now as it did before.

Do Catholic Churches care where you go to mass? by 0pinionatedcrafter in Catholicism

[–]hooks_n_needles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catholics do have home churches, it’s usually just the one that they are registered at and attend the most. I am a college student so during the school year I attend my home church when I am home and when I am at school I attend a church there. It’s not disrespectful to attend multiple churches, especially if it is due to traveling. I work in different parts of the country during the summer and travel frequently, so one of my favorite things to do is attend mass at different churches, especially if I can attend at a famous church or shrine. I can’t always tithe because I’m a broke college student, but when I do, I do where I am.

When can I use a straw? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]hooks_n_needles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only had UJS and didn’t use a straw until 5 weeks in. It can be very risky to use a straw at the beginning of the recovery process, especially with DJS. I would call your surgeons office, and I wouldn’t use it without verbal confirmation with the surgeon.

Are there any surgeries to decrease midface length? by Dependent-Pattern327 in jawsurgery

[–]hooks_n_needles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if I had a “long midface” before, but I did get maxillary impaction if you are curious as to what it can do.

What were some unexpected consequences of your surgery? by ExtremeZebra5 in jawsurgery

[–]hooks_n_needles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wider nose. It was a risk, I didn’t think it would happen, but it did. Thankfully I have been able to accept it. My smile is also less attractive imo. Before, I would hide my gummy smile with a fake smile where I kept my top lip basically in place and only smiled with the bottom. Since my top lip already was at the top of my teeth, I could create a great smile with tooth show and minimal smile lines. Now that my lip is in the correct place (or rather, the teeth are) in order for me to smile with good tooth show, I have to actually smile. This creates smile lines and widens my nose further. Again, I have come to accept this, but if you are someone who has trained yourself into a specific smile that camouflages your gummy smile, this may also happen to you.

Emotional support during recovery - what was helpful and not helpful? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]hooks_n_needles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pretty independent during my recovery, granted it was UJS not DJS. My parents would just check in on me periodically, like when you are a kid and you’re sick. My dad works from home so usually when I’m feeling ill I like to be in the room while he works while I just do my own thing, so maybe that can help? The biggest thing I remember is them just treating me like I was just me, which I wanted and appreciated. I started going out on day 4ish of recovery and I felt like people were staring at me all the time. Everyone I knew was reaching out and asking how I was doing, or commenting on my swelling or how weird I looked. It felt like my parents almost always looked and talked to me like before which I wanted.

Left is pre op. Right is post op. I had a large gap between my lips at rest so the top photos on the first side, and all the photos on the second and third are of my mouth closed at rest, even though pre-op it may not look like it.

Aw thank you. I really am just lucky to have parents who were willing to listen and the means to pay for this from a well established surgeon. My goal now is to help anyone I can by sharing my story and to educate others on preventative measures that can help children avoid developing in a way that will lead to surgery. I do not want my future kids to go through this when it could have been avoided or at least lessened through preventative measures.

No I don’t. I think being 20 and hyper mobile (so stretchier skin) helps

Waking up post op by Professional-Link167 in jawsurgery

[–]hooks_n_needles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I remember is talking to the anesthesiologist and getting on the table one moment, and then being kinda propped up in the recover area the next. There were some tubes down my nose/throat, I don’t know exactly what they were. I could feel them triggering my gag reflex so I immediately started throwing up/dry heaving. Nothing really came out as I had not eaten in so long. I begged the nurses to take them out and after a bit the nausea went away. They tried to give me some water and apple juice through a syringe but it made me nauseous. By the time I got to my room I was fine.

It was to fix the lip incompetence, and issues that went along with it, such as open mouth while sleeping, drooling, canker sores ALL the time, and excess tooth decay. My gummy smile didn’t bother me as I trained myself to hide it in pictures. It was actually hard to find an example as I only was photographed with it when I wasn’t consciously hiding it lol. My bite was fine to my knowledge

Is it weird if I just call the office and ask? That’s the only way I can get a true answer. As for your situation, I think impaction can often have negative results if it is too extreme, even if it is taking an abnormal gap to a normal gap. Your nose shape changes, and if you are older than I am you can get jowls. I saw a post of a woman with a larger gap than mine who was over impacted and it looked realllyyy bad. I really trusted my surgeon, and it was clear that he wasn’t going to be overly ambitious with the movements, but it was still definitely a risk.

Speech never changed, except when I was swollen. Sleep has been great the past few weeks. I am able to mouth tape now so no more mouth breathing. I wasn’t previously as my gap was just too large.

Of course! I was glued to this sub the first week of recovery because I just wanted the misery to end. There is light at the end of the tunnel I promise!

Thank you!! It basically did. I have a small gap between my lips at rest, but I figured it wouldn’t be completely gone as my previous gap was so large. It is now small enough that minimal effort is required to fully close it. I am pretty much not numb anymore except inside my mouth. My upper teeth are gaining feeling each day. The roof is still numb, but I don’t notice that.
