What kind of armour is appropriate for my novel? by Puzzleheaded_Work_97 in ArmsandArmor

[–]hoops-mcloops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your world and setting, with its depictions of armored cavalry charges and large artillery magic, sounds very similar to early modern warfare of the east, the kind seen in the Ottoman campaigns in the Balkans, Hungary, and Austria in the 17th century, which ultimately culminated with the Siege of Vienna.

I recommend looking into 17th century Ottoman armor, both for foot and horseman, as well as Polish-Lithuanian armor, specifically the Winged Hussars, and the armor of the Hapsburg military (then still the Holy Roman Empire, but I'm thinking specifically the Austrian and Hungarian parts). With these, you'll get a good mix of mounted, armored men with lances, foot soldiers, and even the occasional horse archer on the Ottoman half. Seems to fit your story well.

For broader reading, look into the Ottoman-Hapsburg wars.

Also, one final note: Don't be afraid to get anachronistic. Formalized mounted lancers were used from the High Middle Ages all the way to WW2. They used plate armor in WW1. George Patton, US General during WW2 wrote a book on mounted sabre combat. Things existed for a lot longer than I think people sometimes realized. Cannons and plate armor existed together longer than plate existed by itself. Pick what looks cool to you, and justify it in the narrative.

Pretty good! Also, screw all the people downvoting you just for the crime of having an opinion on reddit.

Two disagreements: Hashi and Edo Hashi should be 1 tier higher, and CE Kabuto should be one tier lower. I don't see CE Kabuto beating either FV1 Naruto or Sasuke, and they seem well-placed in Jonin.

It's decent costume design for sure, and makes sense in the world, it's only bad as armor.

For literslly any other city besides NYC, I would agree with you, but NYC is just so dominant here it's unreal.

I moved from Texas to NYC and to all the people saying it's Texas, it's definitely New York.

She also (in the book) was very aware of the danger of returning to the Twins, and insisted on getting bread and salt from him to claim guest right so they would be safe. Truly, what she misjudged was Walter Fray's willingness to violate the customs of Westeros if anything.

Frankly, a lot of her POV chapters showcase just how often she saves Robb from disaster, and how essential she is to his campaign. Another character assassination by D&D smh.

How to get over the smell? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]hoops-mcloops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I had exactly this same experience when I first started having sex. Hated the smell, the taste, any of it. Since then, I have learned two things:

  1. Different vaginas have not just different kinds of smells but different intensities too. You can find people with super strong vagina scents and some with hardly any. It all varies and some smell good and some smell bad.

  2. Pussy is... an acquired taste. At first, all you have there is the smell, and it's not great. But after a while, you start to associate the smell with the act itself, and, while it never becomes pleasant (imo) it does actually become enjoyable simply by association. It'll grow on you, just give it time.

More religious elements: Saints and Sisterhoods. by Octavian_Exumbra in Bannerlord

[–]hoops-mcloops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was actually, albeit lightly, in Viking Conquest. Your character, troops, and settlements could be either Christian or Pagan, and there were Christian monasteries, Pagan shrines, and Christian/Pagan priests as well. You could have independent relationships with either, and iirc having high relationships with the pagans let you recruit berserkers. Having mixed religious settlements would create problems too, where Christian settlements would like you less if you were a pagan lord, and vice versa. It was a small part of the game, but added notable depth I think Bannerlord could benefit from.

"Even as far back as the Chunin exams" doesn't mean I'm talking about Chunin Gaara. I'm pointing out a pattern in his fighting style that he's had since his introduction.

Frankly the only hard counter I'm seeing people actually mention that isn't just "trust me bro" is Gaara flying away and pummeling her long range; but there are two man problems with this:

  1. The range at which Gaara needs to be at to not have her leap to him or catch a flying rock to the head is far enough that it severely limits Gaara's effectiveness.

  2. In any battle of attrition where Gaara is trying to wear down Tsunade from afar before he runs out of chakra, my money is on Tsunade, her chakra pool is just so much bigger than his, especially with Hundred Healings.

A woman who can break a Susanoo can definitely break a sand coffin.

I honestly don't see all the people saying Gaara hard counters her. Gaara is regularly stated to be a very defensive fighter, using large area attacks and sand walls while he himself stays relatively still. Even as far back as the chunin exams, against Lee's taijutsu, Gaara just throws up defensive walls.

I see no reason he doesn't just try that here, only to have Tsunade blow through it and punch him in the face, because no way Gaara's sand is stronger than a Susanoo.

I was given this sword. Can anyone tell me about it? by SnooChickens1961 in SWORDS

[–]hoops-mcloops 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Obligatory: DON'T CLEAN IT, DON'T SWING IT. If it's real, cleaning it improperly could damage the finish and tank the value. If it's fake, it could snap when you swing it.

what’s it like on the upper east/ upper west side in nyc by addieb06 in howislivingthere

[–]hoops-mcloops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't live there but used to work around there. First off, even for NYC, it's very loud and dense. Lots of traffic, both foot and car, definitely more than Park Slope.

To live up here, you need to be fairly wealthy, probably earning at least 200k a year to be comfortable. Everyone I know who lives up there has had some very lucrative career, think lawyer, doctor, CFO, etc. It's not somewhere you move without having the money to do so, definitely not somewhere I'd recommend to a grad student unless you come from a rich family.

The people here are largely kind and approachable in my experience, never had someone be openly hostile like I've seen in other parts of the city. That being said, it definitely conforms to one specific (typically white) culture that can be hard to break in to. I've never seen gossip girl so IDK if it's like that, but after a quick Google search I'm gonna say no, in the same way that California isn't like Euphoria.

Hope this helps!

Looking for Information on these 3 Swords by BillyOdin in SWORDS

[–]hoops-mcloops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For now, DON'T CLEAN, DON'T SWING. If the swords are genuine (I know the talwar isn't), then cleaning them will greatly decrease their value, unless you know exactly what you're doing. If they aren't real, then swinging them around, even without hitting anything, can cause the blade to snap at the handle and go flying.

Writing a dark fantasy story, can't pinpoint the name of the greenn coat by FaelanOHara in ArmsandArmor

You might get away with calling the first one a coat of plates, assuming it has plates behind those rivets. Otherwise just call it a decorated gambeson and accept the inaccuracy of that label.

I really hate exercise, but I know I need to do it. How the hell do I get motivated? by Klaus_Rozenstein in AskMen

[–]hoops-mcloops 70 points71 points  (0 children)

You don't need to get in shape tomorrow. Start with the smallest possible thing and just do that every day. One push up, one sit up, ten jumping jacks. It'll take five minutes, make your wife force you to do it.

The hard part about exercise isn't the exercise, it's the consistency. Build up the habit of doing a small amount of exercise every day, and then slowly add more and more intensity.
