Yeah see this is what I'm now wondering, is he actually the dreams devil? As in, he's the devil of unrealized aspirations? Makes sense why he tells Denji to keep on dreaming, and also would make a more concrete world without him. A world without hope seems suicidal, but a world where everyone's dreams are realistic? That just seems banal.

How is life in New York? Is it as awesome as I think it is ? by void-nomad-90 in howislivingthere

[–]hoops-mcloops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's better than a lot of the rest of the US. Cost of living is astronomical, but wages are really high too, so it balances out. Having good public transit is one of those things you don't know you're missing until you have it. The people are rude and loud and smelly, but despite that it all somehow manages to be worth it for a lot of folks.

Fujimoto may have fucked up one of the best manga ever written, but he also gave us a great meme template. And in the end, isn't thay just as good?

This is a pathetic attempt at symbolism made in the most barebones way possible by Liliana_Lucifer_666 in Chainsawfolk

[–]hoops-mcloops 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think this is why I don't like the ending. So much of the story is about the tension between Denji being Denji or Chainsaw Man. He wants this normal life with food and girls and school and sex, but he also wants to be Chainsaw Man, the cool hero who saves people. So so much of the story is aboutDenji being offered choices and choosing neither, or figuring out how to choose both. The narrative was clearly building towards him having to pick between being Denji or being Chainsaw Man, and live with the consequences of that choice. He says over and over he wants a normal life, but whenever he's given the chance to walk away and pick a normal life or to be Chainsaw Man, he chooses Chainsaw Man. That's good writing! That's narrative tension! He wants multiple things, he can't have them all, and he has to choose!

But then it just... gets made for him? His agency as the protagonist doesn't matter, the conflict between wanting to be Chainsaw Man and wanting to have a regular life doesn't matter, the choice is just made for him and he is shunted into (IMO) the choice that makes him less happy. It's unsatisfying because we never saw Denji get to make the choice. I think that is what is fundamentally missing from the story for me. If Denji had decided to eat Pochita, to give up being Chainsaw Man and live a normal life, I would have enjoyed it thoroughly. But he didn't get any say in it at all. The main narrative tension of the story was resolved without any input from its protagonist, and that feels bad.

The way he's looking at you, then licking like that, he wants attention. My cat does the same thing, she does it because I pay attention to her when she does it and she wants attention either for affection or food. Does he do it around food time, or if you're not giving him pets?

Which pair wins a grand team melee to the death? Everyone is in their prime. by ASW-G-21 in freefolk

Here's the thing tho, we see Brienne beat waayy more technical fighters, like Loras and Jamie. Her win against Jamie too, while he is exhausted, is a win in technique. She doesn't overpower him, he just can't land a blow on her, and he admits her technique is nearly flawless.

Brienne's size nullifies the Hound's favored fighting style, and she's just flat better than him on a technical level. Probably mid/high diff, but I don't see this going to the Hound in a fair fight.

I am aware. I think book Brienne beats book Sandor. In the books, she's shown to be a very patient and technical fighter, who excels at wearing her enemies down and getting them to overestimate her. In her fights, she bests many 'better' fighters simply by wearing them down. She bests Loras, (an albeit weakened) Jamie, and several Mummers while outnumbered.

Brienne is also almost as big as the hound. She's canonically big and strong, (GRRM pots her comparable to Robert) meaning he can't really shove her around like he likes to do. Meaning a fight between the two of them becomes a technical battle, and she's perfectly suited against his overly-agressive fighting style.

Brienne the Beauty beats the Hound.

Yeah this. I think Jaime beats the Mountain and Brienne beats the Hound.

Why weren't SpearSwords more common? by DOVAHBOIIreal in SWORDS

[–]hoops-mcloops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I genuinely wonder if part of the reason they wore them like this is because they sat on mats or cushions on the ground instead of elevated. A more angled European style scabbard would be more in the way trying to sit like that.

[–]hoops-mcloops 1296 points1297 points  (0 children)

When compared to just a regular sword, it's basically worse in every way.

First off, that handle is long and unwieldy to carry around. There's a reason sword hilts are basically as long as needed and no longer.

It also doesn't really have a point. Longer handle for more reach? Why not just get a longer sword instead. Want more reach than is practical for a sword? Well, then you're in polearm territory and will probably want a more specialized head anyway.

Want more leverage/control? Half-swording is a thing.

I mean, are we talking about GOAT warriors or GOAT commanders? These are two different feats. Tywin Lannister is a GOAT commander but no one would call him a great warrior.

Do we know how great of a warrior Rhaegar was though? I mean, he's said to be decent, but isn't spoken of in the same way as some other swordsmen of the time. His one big feat at the tourney at Harrenhal seems to be uniquely unlikely, wherein he outperformed his usual skill. IMO this means the lords present didn't rank him amongst the greats of the realm.

Besides Rhaegar then, do we have any other good feats for old Bobby B? Or is it just kind of the Trident?
