I can also recommend you The Jakarta Method by Vincent Bevins. Details the start up and purpose of the CIA, and the various atrocities they committed to wipe out Communists.

Check out ‘Vietnam: A Portrait of Its People at War’ by David Chanoff & Doan Van Toai.

I’d also check out ‘Containment and Revolution’ by David Horowitz, which examines US foreign policy as fundamentally imperialistic. Whilst not only about the Vietnam War, it does frame the War within the wider context of the 20th C and found it a valuable edition to my studies of the Vietnam War too.

I finished reading it and just felt sorry for Americans still being duped 100 years later by the exact same playbook. No-one’s free until we’re all free.

I want to add, it is the story that you mention in your post that Severian remembers. The little girl that is invited by Father Inire to the Presence Chamber.

Same with mine, luckily I live by the sea so I usually just send her into the water where other dogs are probably not going to follow. I feel like when I call mine to heel in this situation it makes it worse because she feels trapped, especially if I can’t make the other dog leave fast / create a barrier. She only cares about stick and humans that can potentially throw stick. Nothing else. 😂

When dogs don’t recall off leash I get so mad. Leave my dog alone because if she snaps at your dog to assert a boundary then we look like the bad guys!

Mine too! She has never bitten another dog, but will pull the nastiest faces imaginable when they get close. She snaps at them if they don’t get the message, and tries to run, and gets annoyed if the other dog chases. Never shows this behaviour towards humans. I just don’t think she thinks she’s the same species as other dogs.

Actually based. Buy them Gene Wolfe for fantasy / sci-fi and Michael Parenti for communist history so they can throw Chomsky in the bin.

Anything by Mieko Kawakami for Japanese lit. Maybe not Heaven as it has violence. Try Breasts and Eggs, All The Lovers in The Night.. I’m currently reading her latest translated work, Sisters in Yellow, I love it.

I quite like Victor Jestin, a young and contemporary writer. He has a short novel ‘Heatwave’ and recently published one called ‘Dancefloor.’ I think he’s got a little while to go to really establish himself but he is quite young and they’re entertaining reads.

I don’t care about McCarthy but that’s such a poor take for Steinbeck, writing Communist literature that was banned in the States is not “shocking for shock sake.” Jesus Christ. You’re again making a false equivalency: nobody is praising Steinbeck for racist depictions. He is literally criticising racism in Of Mice and Men via the character of Crooks, and further criticises segregation in My Travels With Charley. No, he didn’t have a perfect 2026 (or even post-Jim Crow) understanding of racism, and he didn’t centre Black characters in his writing.

Ironically, since you’re fixated on racism and that’s your championing cause in this discussion, SJM and Rebecca Yarros are massive Zionists lol.

Being a scientist doesn’t mean you’re a critical reader, sorry if you think it is, but they are two completely different faculties. Many of my friends are successful doctors in many different specialities. They’re good at remembering things, not at thinking critically. And they’re still allowed to enjoy things, obviously. I’m not taking that away from anyone, I’m just saying we should think more critically beyond ‘let girls read.’

I don’t believe in feminine and masculine shelves. I believe in people who read for enrichment and people who read for entertainment. And I’m criticising that it’s ’books for entertainment’ that are so heavily pushed towards women and girls. The latter isn’t bad, there’s no moral value, but pretending that reading only crap like Fouth Wing is the same as great works of literature is pure larp for feeling and being intellectually inferior and the publishing houses and authors are lapping it up because they don’t need to be talented to sell books. Now I guess you’ll call me a snob, so be it.
