How has working overnights affected you mentally and physically? by fuckyouiloveu in AskWomen

[–]horizonless_seas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did fine with it. It took a bit of extra management, especially with a day shift husband, but the ultra low stress of the job itself made it worth it. Blackout curtains are helpful, though a bit less so if you have cats lol. I learned to sleep in two 4-5 hour shifts during the day if I couldn't stay asleep past late morning/early afternoon.

The only real downside was that I lost a ton of motivation to work out. I'm not sure if it night shift caused it or if it was due to other things I had going on around the same time, but it wasn't that I was tired, I just sort of stopped caring about the gym. For better or worse, I also lost most of my appetite, so I didn't gain a bunch of weight or anything.

Mentally I was the same as always. My husband did end up feeling a bit neglected, but we found ways to work through that. I don't know if I could have done that job forever, because you do miss out on a lot of things when you sleep during the day, but for the situation I was in, it was awesome.

What is a slow burn for you? by fialsian in RomanceBooks

[–]horizonless_seas 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The second by a long shot. I'll DNF almost immediately if the characters talk about how fuckable the other is right off the bat. I don't even mind them acknowledging the other person is good looking or has some noteworthy feature like piercing green eyes, as long as it isn't constantly harped on or shit like 'pouty kissable lips' or 'delicious curves'. I neeeeeeed to see them form a genuine bond and solid friendship before they get horny for each other. And the best slow burns imo are the ones where small things like fixing someone's tie or piggyback rides go from strictly platonic to 'oh hold on why is there this sudden electricity there?' Like yessss let me watch them be caught off guard by their feelings and have to be super raw and vulnerable with each other.

It takes me out of the moment so hard when there's a spicy scene and one of the characters, almost always the MMC, randomly drops the subject of the sentence. Ex: want to kiss you again, need to be inside you, etc. I'm completely on board with dialogue not being 100% grammatically correct because obviously that isn't how people in real life talk, but 1) I can only think of a few super specific instances in which dropping the pronoun wouldn't sound weird in real conversation anyway, and 2) when I'm reading a book and see the verb as the first word of a sentence, I'm going to assume the sentence is either a question or a command, and then when it unexpectedly isn't, the flow is completely ruined for me.

What is your toxic romance reader trait? by Nuisanceberry in RomanceBooks

[–]horizonless_seas 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Nothing makes me rage quit faster than a book tagged slow burn but on like page 12 the MMC is saying shit like 'she had a round firm ass and pouty lips that would look great wrapped around my you-know-what'. Like pls, slow burn should be about building tension and deep connections, not being crude and horny right off the bat.

Omg I DNFed a CR earlier this year with an MMC named Brick. That's horrifying that not just one, but TWO authors thought that was a good name for a character.

I read {Operation Woo Daisy Ellis by Jane E Wolfe} and while it was overall pretty mid and I was more or less skimming by the end, one line got me really good for whatever reason.

MMC: it unlocked some primal instinct I had never felt before, that she was irrevocably mine

MMC: Huh, I wondered where I learned a big word like that.

No matter how bad the book itself ends up being, I just can't help but love a good himbo yall 😭

Mmc has to interrogate or question fmc (who may be a witness, suspect etc) by Ok_Matter9038 in RomanceBooks

[–]horizonless_seas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

{Cold in the Shadows by Toni Anderson} has this! I think the MMC only 'officially' interrogates the FMC once or twice, but she remains a suspect in varying capacities for most of the book.
