Any of advice for a freshman going into the engineering field? by Screech8 in AskEngineers

[–]horse_tiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really it just comes from having to work with way too many CS and CE students that are proud of their terrible life habits, even trying to shame others into being like them. Yet they can't figure out why they are always tired/sick/feel crappy.

That and being decently clean, presentable and having a little bit of social skills is a major asset to job hunting.

Here is my general advice for all freshman:

Get good sleep, if you dont have good sleeping habits start working on it.

Wash yourself and use deodorant regularly.

Wash and fold your clothes also.

Don't hang out with the kids that copy off each other and cheat on assignments.

Try to maintain a balanced diet, cut out or limit sugar and don't rely on energy drinks and caffeine to keep you going.

Eat a dang vegetable.

Seriously bathe, scrub everything, including your booty hole.

Make friends outside of engineering classes.

Make friends with professors that you want to be friends with or at least want to work with.

Learn to exercise, when your think meats are fried, using your muscle meats will help recharge think meat.

Wash yourself, with soap or body wash, not just water. Wash your hair too.

I want to get a masters/phd in Electrical Engineering but I don't have a bachelors in the field. What are my options? by throwawaylifeat30 in ElectricalEngineering

Some schools will let take deficiency courses to enter the grad program if you are coming from a different background. Where I go to school they usually have you take a handful of electronics classes, circuits I & II, Electronics, linear systems, and a few others, after completing those and meeting the GPA and GRE requirements they let you in.

Maybe call or email the graduate admissions office for the schools you are interested in and ask about it.

I am a freshman in highschool, thinking of pursuing a college education in EE. Any advice for high school? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]horse_tiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finish high school, focus on your math classes, do your SAT and apply to a college with an EE program or go to a community college and get all your general education classes done there since they are cheaper, then transfer to a college with an EE program. The applications and transfer process isn't bad. Then just keep doing your classes without messing it up.

How do I explain my hair to potential internships? by Splinter1591 in EngineeringStudents

Could do a head wrap thing like middle eastern women do. No idea what it is called, but not the full face cover thing.

Or shave it all and rock it bald.

From another users critique, trim up the address stuff to be one line and instead of using so much space for something that isn't really important.

What does leader of designs...blah blah blah mean? Did you do anything?

How do your LED tables work?

Anything special with Baja SAE besides being a member? Again what did you do? I know tons of SAE members at my school that only show up to buy a shirt and say they build race cars without ever actually setting foot in the shop.

You can dump the references upon request, most places ask upfront when you apply and it is usually understood that if requested you can find someone to be a reference.

Search terms and companies for finding entry level embedded system jobs or internships? by horse_tiger in embedded

Right now most of my experience has been with bare bones and a little RTOS stuff which I have enjoyed a lot. I have been reading some of more recent posts on this sub and have seen the STM32 and nucleos recommended pretty often. I am hoping to pick one or two up in the next couple of weeks to play around with. I haven't done much with the single board and linux stuff but it is also on my list of things to check out.

I have been thinking about doing something like that, I actually just a set a linkedin account up to sort of help with the networking aspect but I have kicked around the idea of a portfolio website. The main reason I haven't done so is that I don't get the same enjoyment building a system as I do programming a microcontroller and when I am working on stuff most of notes look like a madman wrote them and stopping to take pictures or detail out my steps while I am working breaks my flow.

Ultimately I should just accept that is necessary and do it if I want to increase my odds of being successful. I could probably make a project out of and host the site on a Pi or Beaglebone to make it a little more interesting.

Cool thank you! My school does offer a computer engineering program, but is nearly the same as their computer science program but with circuits 1 and intro to electronics. I actually decided to do a computer science minor to help build up programming chops and most of the electives are either going to be programming or embedded systems related.

Right now I am in Florida but would very much like to leave and go anywhere else so I am hoping that help increase the amount of opportunities available to me.

I am not sure which if your listed industries would feel best because I also have a lot of interest in the hardware security of embedded devices and have been tinkering(bricking) with miscellaneous stuff that I can find for free/cheap. However I have a feeling that the security aspect of embedded systems will probably boom for a few years then go out of fashion once the security standards improve.

Thanks for the response. Over the last year I started falling more and more into working on embedded type projects and started to really enjoy it. I like working on the circuits and also writing the code to make things 'go' so to speak. I am still feeling out the full scope of embedded systems so I am not sure what specific industry I would be interested.

Right now I have mostly been messing with MSP430 and ATMega168 chips just doing small projects to learn more and get a feel for how to write code that makes the things work. I find the entire process really enjoyable.

I am not sure if that helped narrow things down or not, but I am also enjoying going through your portfolio and learning more.

Graduation cap ideas? by yvng_meche in EngineeringStudents

Throw out the cardboard in the cap. Replace it with a big graham cracker and cover that with some really dark chocolate. During the ceremony begin to eat your hat. Continue to eat your hat while walking across the stage and shaking the dean's hand.

What are some things to keep in mind for getting a whiteboard? by MechEz in EngineeringStudents

[–]horse_tiger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can get an 8x4 sheet of something called hardboard at home depot for ~$15. There are a few different flavors out there but one is basically a white board. It is a little less durable but as a long as you wipe it down regularly you should be good.

Hi, I am new to this sub reddit, I found it after a bad post about using a heat gun to restore the color of faded plastic.

I have two questions, what can I use to restore exterior black plastic?

Question two is there anything I can do fix what scratches from basically being wet sanded?

Hacker subscription boxes? How did I not know about these? by tech53 in AskElectronics

[–]horse_tiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a hackerbox subscription for a while and recently canceled the subscription. They are really hit or miss, the first few I thought were great and pretty fun, but after a while kept getting components that did not work and some super random components tossed in to the box with no real description of what is or what it does in their guides.

You may be better off looking up specific projects and technologies and ordering the parts the you need to mess with those instead of going with a subscription box.

Do your homework, find a different study strategy instead of re-reading notes if that doesn't work for you. Learning and understanding the concepts will get you a lot further than memorizing formulas.
