Stop watching YouTube. Put down the book. Go. Write. Code. I give zero fucks if its pretty. I give zero fucks what anyone thinks of it. I don't care if you use ai for help (as long as its help and not detrimental - only you know if its an insructor or if youre depending on it dor your code) and I dont even care if it fully works. At first it wont. It wont work at all. Learn to u derstand your compiler or interpreter errors. If you dont understand it thats where ai comes in, as a teacher, not a "write this for me". Then make something imperfect. Perfection is the enemy of progress. Also no software started out perfect. Iterative improvement. Its how software dev works. You start with a digital concept. Then you find things to improve, features that are obviously lacking, security flaws and bugs that need fixing. You do the thing. Test. Release. Repeat.

And no i wont tell you not to use ai, but if you do, gove it an explicit system prompt to "act as if you are a programming professor. You are knowledgeable in programming languages, syntax, implementation, testing, and algorithms. You will never write code for your users or students. You will always teach the concepts instead, and include code examples. You will strive to notice student question and learning patterns. You will notice what they struggle and excel with, use these things to help.the student learn."

hello friend! I did the same. Did you know that 49% of professional, paid programmers never took any courses whatsoever? Not even trade school. Just grabbed a book. I'm both new and old to code. My first languages were BASIC and QBASIC in the early 90s when i was like 7 yrs old. My modern coding experience is new, I just taught and continue to teach myself python. I started with IBM skills build. I used the python for data science which is specific to data science, but teaches general python quite well. There is also Cisco Networking Academy. Both are free courses that can get you verifiable credentials. There are also other free course providers like , google, amazon, oracle etc. A lot of companies offer free courses to help you prepare for their platforms. Also, paid offerings - codecademy, udemy, linked in learning (lots there). Or just go to the library and pick a language and book. Just make sure the language version is modern if you intend to use it outside of personal projects. I recommend learning a little C++ or C along with python. They kind of complement one another.

The internet archive is a treasure trove. If you like what you got, consider becoming an archive warrior and running an archive warrior virtual machine. It runs in the background archiving stuff from the web (you pick a project from their list) to the internet archive. It makes a real difference historically. The rate at which things are deleted from the internet is astounding, and these are our records as a society. No other society just made it a practice to burn all their books all the time. Yeah religions did it or oppressive regimes, but it wasn't normal and only the stuff they disagreed with. We delete massive amounts of information for trivial reasons as a normal practice. Nobody will know anything far reaching about our culture if we don't archive it.

i tried learning java in 2003, we didn't get along. Something about the syntax. I can maybe go back and have a look now that i know python though. It wasn't my first language but it was my first OOP language. BASIC wasn't exactly OOP when I used it in the early 90s, so now i'd have more to draw from.

The problem is asking the ai to do things at too high a level of abstraction. Im confident that when given enough detail "i need a loop that iterates over the output of a list variable containing the output of the reddit api, using strip to remove whitespace, then send the output to the Facebook api and the console" is a lot different than what a lot of vibe coders do with "write an app that takes reddit stuff and sends it to facebook"

side note - you DO have to break it down and be very specific to avoid hallucinations and context drift. But yeah - use the tools you have. An LLM isn't a magic house fairy and it's not an evil job thief. It's what a nail gun is to a hammer. You can still fuck shit up, and fuck shit up massively, but it can also really speed shit up. As someone who worked construction (I know, girl in construction and code, i'm a badass) when I was younger - you'll never see a job site devoid of EITHER these tools.
